Discipline secures the win


IN THE recent Ashton 7’s tournament, Hillcrest High School’s rugby 7s team walked away with the win.

Hillcrest kicked off the tournament against hosts Ashton College with a victory of 12-0. The next pool game was against South City, which the boys won 24-0.

In the semi-final, Hillcrest High came up against neighbours Curro Hillcrest, who they beat 21-14. That meant they qualified for the final, where they came up against formidable opponents, Kuswag Skool.

It was a very closely-fought final, and at the end of the game the schools were tied seven-apiece. Extra time followed, at the end of which was three minutes of sudden death. This ended up, still, locked in a draw. This meant that whichever team on the day showed the best discipline, won the final — thus was Hillcrest High declared the champions, having won with their superior discipline, having conceded no yellow cards for the whole tournament.

Coach Dusty Noble stated that he was very impressed with the junior players in the team, as the 7s tournament is used to prepare the boys for playing first team rugby the following season.

Noble said: “I am so proud of the boys’ performance. The boys really showed the attributes of what it takes to be a Hillcrest higher. They played like champions on and off the field and a spirit of togetherness pulled us to the end.”

Hillcrest High School Rugby Teams

Game 1 at the KZN/Gauteng schools festival draws to an end. After Hillcrest going down 24-0 at half time against Northcliff High School, the boys showed true character to bring the game back to 24-22 at the final whistle.

A special mention to our old boys staying in JHB who took the time to come watch the game. We face Benoni High School on Monday morning and look forward to enjoying the game with our old boys once more.
