A Very Foodly Diary

A Very Foodly Diary

As Hippocrates said, "Let thy medicine be thy food and thy food be thy medicine." Eat mindfully. Lo Thanks for visiting. I wish you well on your path.

This page is sporadically updated--for blog posts, and links that jump out and say something to me. Through A Very Foodly Diary, I share my food journey, with a focus on mindful eating: awareness of where your food comes from, how it is sourced/produced, your mood and food, and how to be a conscious consumer.

Food is Free Project

Brilliant news for Melbourne!
Hmmm...OzHarvest Market opened in Sydney last year... Could this concept be slowly making it's way to western shores? I certainly hope so.

Love this new concept using rescued food!

Shoppers can name their price, and those who can’t afford to pay for their goods are welcome to take what they need at no cost. It’s reported that Australians waste up to 4 million tonnes of food annually, and discard up to 20 per cent of the food they purchase.

These red globe grapes were discovered under leafy branches today, having ripened in spite of receiving no special care. Don't you just love a good accidental harvest!

I still get a buzz when someone downloads Uncooked or Love Thy Food: http://luluwasamouse.tomely.com/ These recipes live on as standards in our house--especially the rawmesan, which I make at least every other week.

Rawmesan is an essential part of my favourite weekend breakfast: poached eggs (from our girls, of course) topped with olive oil and rawmesan, on a bed of avocado, rocket, and spelt sourdough. Those little red drops on the side are my latest addiction--the 'widow maker' sriracha from Dingo Sauce Co. So delicious.

Companion Planting | Sustainable Gardening Australia

Here in Perth, it's too hot to plant new seeds and seedlings, so I am planning forward, for my autumn planting. I have used this handy guide to companion planting for a couple of years now and it's become a staple reference for me: http://www.sgaonline.org.au/companion-planting/ I hope you find it useful too!

Dingo Sauce Co. by leigh nash

I love my sriracha but I don't love the extras -- like potassium sorbate -- often added to imported sauces. This chilli sauce is locally produced from local ingredients, and the chef/maker person is crowdfunding to expand. Get behind it! https://pozible.com/project/dingo-sauce-co

This recipe's for the hen keepers: a healing salve. Simply mix 1 heaped teaspoon of solid coconut oil with 8 drops each of frankincense and lavender essential oils.

In attempting to treat a bleeding, henpecked chook as naturally as possible, I turned to Timber Creek Farm's wound ointment: http://timbercreekfarmer.com/essential-oils-for-chicken-care/ . As well healing poor Rhonda, the scent of the oils seems to keep the other chickens from further attacks.

An added bonus: it turns out this salve is a heavy duty moisturiser for cracked elbows :)

Gardening In Perth In October | Gardening Gals | Perth, Western Australia

It's such a beautiful spring day in Perth that we couldn't help but spend most of it (so far) in the garden! For planting and transplanting, it helps to have some sort of guide, and an easy one for Perthians comes courtesy of the Gardening Gals. Hulk soup

So...we're well into July and A Very Foodly Diary's page is still here. I went to delete it as planned, but the almost-act of it made me feel physically ill.

Since my 'goodbye post' of 16 June, I've had offline conversations with people who have been disappointed to know that this little community was closing down. Because that's what it is: a community. I had forgotten that when we channel positivity and love through any medium, we connect with other positive, loving beings. I became so concerned about my own limitations (ie. my inability to commit to a self-imposed regime of regular updates) that I lost sight of this beautiful fact.

So what I'm saying is: I want to stay connected if you do.

While I can't commit to regular posts, my updates will be meaningful when I do post.

And I would like to invite you to contribute to this page, via mindful thoughts and links about the way we eat and live, in the hope that we can all grow our consciousness together.

In the simmering hate and fear that pervades so much this world right now, we need these little beacons of inspiration and kindness to move us toward a more generous, connected future. At least, I know I do.

So I won't be deleting this page after all.

To begin to make it up to you for my false alarm, here's a link to my latest blog post -- Hulk soup: http://wp.me/pFjbg-1G6

Thanks for sticking with me, and I hope to see you here again very soon :)

"Imagine using your immediately available space to provide for your family’s needs, in a way that creates community, more family time, happier humans, and far less impact on the planet, and its atmosphere.

All the while placing you in a far better position to adapt to future changes of all kinds, from crazy weather to economic slowdown, than in an ordinary suburban street.

Would you want to create that kind of street?"

A Very Foodly Diary

I have some news: while I will keep food blogging via A Very Foodly Diary, I'll be closing this page at the end of the month.
This means you have just over two weeks to trawl through the archived fb posts and bookmark the links you like.
I will also post links to my top 'to follow' fb pages/groups before I close the page.
Thanks so much for liking and following (some of you have been with me since A Foodly Affair's inception!), I just don't have the time to maintain it and keep up with my writing.
With love and light,
Hannah.

Over Grow The System

With the recent contention around hen treatment and egg quality, there has been no better time to keep your own free-range chickens--and if you can't keep your own, find someone local who does and pay them for your egg supply. When you have happy chickens, the eggs are amazing :)

"How to keep chickens. Chicken house design with composting chickens. Learn how to keep happy healthy hens and chickens in your backyard. This video presents, in detail, the idea of deep bedding under chickens. The hens turn the compost and produce amazing fertility and even better eggs. We have been using this system at Atitlan Organics for many years and always have happy healthy hens and ridiculously amazing huevos!"

It was a privilege and a delight to spend this morning planting marigolds and starting worm farms with my littlest one's kindergarten class. The enthusiasm and joy from those three and four-year olds made my heart smile; a good reminder that you're never too young or too old to benefit from a day in the garden!

"Just as with learning to walk, children learn best by doing rather than by watching. Gardening with kids is filled with exploration, education, and fun, allowing them to experience things firsthand and participate in active learning. Working in a garden inspires creativity, develops nurturing skills, and empowers kids to make choices, thus giving them a sense of pride in their accomplishments."

One conscious act can inspire many more.

Planting my first front yard garden I made plenty of mistakes, but out in the front yard I started connecting with others. One neighbor told me that just walking past the garden and seeing it grow inspired her to start her first garden and now she's gotten her friends growing their first homegrown broccoli. Behold the power of the ripple effect!

My Story

Welcome!

Since 2009, A Very Foodly Diary has been my avenue to connect with others over food. I have focused on growing awareness of where our food comes from, how it is sourced/produced, the connectivity of mood and food, and being a conscious consumer.

As I post less often and live more, my blog--and this page--have become repositories for favourite recipes, foodly experiences, musings, and other links that have jumped out and said something to me.

I hope you find joy, peace, and inspiration in these posts, and consider contributing to this safe space.

Yours in mindful eating,
