Making space in publishing for black enby rulers of the solar system and #polyamory #romance with disabled characters. #diversefiction #fantasy #scifi
Once upon a time Lilith was kind of bummed because she couldn’t find anything good to read. There were plenty of dashing heros and brave damsels and talking starships. But the book world was decidedly lacking in black enby rulers of the solar system, polyamory romances with disabled characters (who aren’t that fond of romance, thank you very much), and re-incarnated goddesses with chips on their s

April, or what is commonly dubbed as "world autism awareness month" is almost here, which is when many businesses and organizations will unfortunately not do their research, and donate to bad, ableist "autism charities" that spread stigma about autism and do not serve the needs of autistic people.
Here is a quick snapshot of some of the largest autism related organizations in the United States, and the criteria they do or don't meet. The left is criteria that good autism related organizations do and should meet, although this is certainly not an extensive list. I will also put a template in the comments for anyone who wants to add another organization to the list to compare to see if they meet the criteria for being a good autistic advocacy organization.
I have written a more detailed article here including more organizations from outside the United States, and whether they are good advocacy organizations or bad, ableist “autism charities”: https://intheloopaboutneurodiversity.wordpress.com/2019/11/28/good-autistic-advocacy-organizations-vs-bad-autism-charities/
About the criteria:
Autistic led: This means that a majority of board members or leadership of the organization are autistic themselves. Some may have different definitions for this criteria, but by "majority," I will classify this as having more than 50% of leadership being autistic. For example, if an organization has five board members, at least three of them should be autistic (either have a diagnosis or be self diagnosed). Having one or two autistic people on a board of twenty other people who are not autistic does not meet this criteria. Both ASAN and AWN are autistic led, while Autism Speaks and Autism Society of America may have one or a few autistic people involved on their board, but are not autistic led.
Against abuse: This means that the organization has a clear stance against abusive practices that are too commonly done to autistic people. This includes having a clear stance against strict compliance therapies such as ABA and against autism pseudoscience such as quack "treatments" and "autism diets." ASAN and AWN are both against ABA and abusive practices of autistic people and have made it clear in their position statements. Autism Speaks and the Autism Society of America are pro-ABA and have had harmful people with pseudoscientific views in their organizations (such as Bernard Rimland for Autism Society of America, who believed vaccines caused autism).
Minority representation: This means that the organization has people in its leadership that are underrepresented such as autistic people of color, autistic nonspeakers, autistic people who are LGBTQIA+, autistic women and nonbinary people, and autistic people with intellectual disabilities among other marginalized groups. ASAN and AWN both meet this criteria.
No stigma: This means that the organization does not use stigmatizing language or symbols about autism on its website, messaging, social media, or in person. Stigmatizing language includes the use of functioning labels, pathologizing autism by comparing it to diseases or illnesses, or talking about the "burden" of autism on caregivers. It also means the organization does not use ableist symbols such as the puzzle piece that is commonly used for "autism awareness." Both Autism Speaks and the Autism Society have, or continue to use the puzzle piece symbol for autism and use stigmatizing language about autism.
Does not advocate for "cures" or "treatments" for autism: This means that the organization does not fund eugenics research or talk about the need for "curing" or "treating" autism, does not advocate for legislation that advocates for cures and treatments for autism, and does not use language that discusses a need to "cure" or "treat" autism. Both Autism Speaks and the Autism Society of America have advocated for the passage of Autism CARES, formerly the Combating Autism Act, that funds cure and treatment research for autism.
Founded by autistic people: This means that the organization, from the very beginning, was started or founded by autistic people themselves. ASAN and AWN were founded by autistic people themselves and were made by and for autistic people, while Autism Speaks and the Autism Society were not and have ableist histories.
Majority of funds go to the needs of autistic people: This means that the large majority of the organization's budget goes towards autistic advocacy that benefits autistic people or advances the rights of autistic people and towards services for autistic people. Less than 2% of funding for Autism Speaks goes to the needs of autistic people, while a much larger percentage goes to PSAs and six figure salaries for their executives.
Should I support this organization: If the organization meets the above criteria, then yes. It is paramount that we send a message by supporting autistic-led organizations that are advocating for the needs of autistic people now, and maybe this will hopefully encourage other organizations that do not yet meet this criteria to make progress towards meeting the needs of autistic people and increasing autistic representation in their organization.
Image description: The top left reads, "Should I support this autism organization?" The top of the chart has the logos of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), the Autistic Women's and Nonbinary Network (AWN), Autism Speaks, and the Autism Society of America (ASA). Both ASAN and AWN meet the criteria of being autistic led, being against abuse of autistic people, have autistic minorities on their board, do not use ableist language, do not advocate for "treatments" or "cures" for autism, were founded by autistic people, have the majority of their funds go towards advocacy for and the needs of autistic people, and are great organizations.
Autism Speaks and the Autism Society of America do not meet these criteria, and we should not support these organizations during April, or any other month of the year. However, these organizations are much larger, have much more funding, and unfortunately receive much more attention than the better organizations, such as ASAN and AWN, do.

Where to Start If You Haven't Read Enough Toni Morrison The literary legend leaves behind books that give voice to America's most pressing issues

This International Non-Binary People’s Day, let’s look at 10 ways to be a better ally to nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and genderq***r people:
1) Don’t assume nonbinary people all look, think, or behave a certain way. “Nonbinary” can be both an umbrella term and a specific, personal identity. There are many ways to be nonbinary!
2) Don’t treat nonbinary identities as a “phase.”
3) Don’t assume all nonbinary people use they/them pronouns. Get comfortable leading with your pronouns and asking others for theirs.
4) Don’t argue with nonbinary people about their identities; they know better than you.
5) Do use more gender-neutral language in your everyday life.
6) Do treat the nonbinary people you meet just like you do everyone else, and don’t ask invasive, personal questions.
7) Do know that nonbinary identities span all races, nationalities, and socioeconomic statuses.
8) Do stand up for nonbinary identities, even if it is uncomfortable. Start by asking nonbinary people in your life how you can best support them.
9) Do know that you will make mistakes, and that’s okay! Just remember to learn from them.
10) Do let your nonbinary friends know that you support them. Explicitly. Regularly. Without expectation. Or exception.
This show is not only everything excellent about the horror genre, it is a wonderful representation of Black and indigenous culture that so many people are desperately yearning for. I have never seen another Black Native so realistically and thoroughly depicted. People are more than ready for content like this. It is a huge mistake to let it go.
It is literally the only show I've ever watched that I have zero complaints about!!! That is a record!! Y'all better bring this show back somewhere!!! Lilith lives!!!
