The North Garden
Our goal is to be producers! Each year we produce more. We will post updates here about what we’re doing and try to share tips as we go!
Cedar Waxwings!!
We didn’t net our Honeyberries this year ( ) so we shared more with the birds. TOTALLY worth it to get dozens of Cedar Waxwings in our yard!
It was time to rescue my Thyme babies from the volunteer groundcover! Here’s a before and after of today’s work, plus a picture of growth. Most are 2-3x larger than they were when planted!!
One of our favorite parts of spring is the re-emergence of our lemon lettuce!
Guilty! 😂🤣
🤣 True story
I planted creeping thyme on our patio in 2016. 10% of it survived Groot. Groot is gone so it’s time to re-plant. Saturday ftw.
My Christmas present: Best. Waffle. Iron. Ever.
It’s cold outside but it’s HOT in here! Jalapeños, habaneros, and chilies! 🌶
.colors
Today’s chore: candying eleven pounds of jalapeños! 😋
It’s apple time! Thankful for my apple picking buddy!
Here comes apple jam, sauce, butter, chips, and leather!
I thought my eggplants were overwhelmed by weeds in June. But guess what’s growing in my flower pots?!? I wonder what I planted in the vegetable patch... 😂
. . . .
Year 3: The Arctic Kiwi has FINALLY made it to the top of the pergola! Now let it grow and cover!!!
2018 canning round 1 in the books! Rhubarb and apricots!!
Weeding buddy! Rain earlier + overcast skies + wind (fewer mosquitos) = great weeding day!
. . .
Planted wildflowers last year. Today we had our first monarch spotting (I think)! Any experts want to confirm or deny?
This is what my legs look like on weeding days. Right now that’s every day! Why? Weeds!

This. Always.

It’s FINALLY honey berry season!! (Picking day 1 of 2.)
It’s 88 degrees. Reasonable people are hiding in air conditioning. I’m mowing. 🤪
.
First Little League win and first ice cream of the season. It’s a good Tuesday!
Pre-work chores: start yogurt, make smoothie pops, start effective microbes, and water garden. Just your typical Tuesday. Or not.
Officially traded the shovels for the lawnmower. Bring it. I am SO ready for this!
.
Saturday Chore Number 3 Done: paint back porch steps.
.
Expert Tip: Large dogs and painted porches don’t mix well. 🙃
❤️ We all have our roles. She guards, he serenades, I hide in the growing things. ❤️
Saturday Chore Round 2 Done: leaf removal. Next step, shred.
.
Saturday Chore Round 1 Done: pot up tomatoes and start hardening off onions, celery, and kale
It’s spring! Tulips, onions, and daylilies are here! Garden is tilled.
‘s favorite part of tilling is having a beer afterward. What a guy!
I’m dreaming of rhubarb and asparagus. Come on spring!
I don’t have a greenhouse. So seed starting slowly takes over our living space each spring. First the library table makes room for a warming mat and grow light. Now totes are spending some time stacked on the floor to allow for a second grow light on the storage shelf. So worth it.
Since there’s not much to do outside today, I might as well make myself useful inside. Grizzly Adams is out of beard oil and sick people need aroma therapy.
The animal friends are disappointed with April too.
If only the soil temp was it’s normal 50 degrees. I would be planting a list of veggies today! What is today’s soil temp? 32degrees 😨

Round 1 is thriving, round 2 has emerged, round 3 is going in today. One more round mid-April and I’m done inside! If only it would stop snowing! 😣
Bread pudding: our favorite way to eat the rounded ends and a great way to start Tuesday morning!
