Back when Neal was 19 in 1988, he joined the great southern rock band Blackfoot for a few years. It was his first chance to tour the US and Europe and was for sure some of his fondest memories. Hereās an article about it from the NJ music magazine the East coast Rocker. We referred to him as ālocal boy makes goodā for years š

Today would have been Nealās 55th birthday. Here he is happily noodling away with Circles Around The Sun at Paste Magazine studios back in January 2019. Not sure why there are subtitles, but enjoy! Happy Birthday, Neal!
Neal in New Jersey, September 29, 1997
Itās hard to believe itās been 4 years today since Neal left this world. Although he didnāt write the words to this song himself I know he felt them deeply, even as a 23-year old back in 1992 when he recorded this version of Floyd Red Crow Westermanās beautiful song Quiet Desperation. This track will be included on the forthcoming Neal Casal Archives album release- more details on that very soon. Nealās original demo just had him on acoustic guitar, John Ginty on piano and Angie Mckenna on harmony vocal, but weāve now added new contributions from Alex Koford on drums, Jeff Hill on bass and Jon Graboff on pedal steel guitar and I truly believe Neal would have loved the way this turned out. Rest In Peace, sweet friend.
My soul is in the mountain
My heart is in the land
But Iām lost here in this city
Thereās so much I donāt understand
And this quiet desperation coming over me coming over me
Iāve gotta leave I canāt stay another day
Thereās an emptiness inside of me
I canāt bear the loneliness I have
Thereās another place Iāve got to be
Another place Iāve got to be
I long for you Dakota
The smell of sweet grass on the plain
But I see too much meanness
And I feel too much pain
And this quiet desperation coming over me Coming over me
Iāve gotta leave I canāt stay another day
Thereās an emptiness inside of me
I canāt bear the loneliness I have
Thereās another place Iāve got to be
Another place Iāve got to be

Today would have been Nealās 54th birthday and Iāve been immersed in a bottomless well of his unreleased solo songs from many years ago. Plans are afoot to release an album of some of his 90ās demos in 2023 and itās been incredible digging thru the vast archives he left behind and hearing some of these beautiful songs 30 years later, songs that were the soundtrack to our friendship all those years ago. More details to come soon on this archival project, but for his birthday I wanted to share this sweet cover he did of āGreatest Friendā, a song written by Mike Heron of The Incredible String Band in 1968. Neal recorded this in the late 90ās and I found it in a box of cassettes of his home recordings. Jim Scott managed to beautify the audio and we recruited Nealās great friends Jon Graboff, Jeff Hill and Jesse Aycock to add some new touches on acoustic guitar, bass and harmony vocals, respectively. I think Neal would happily approve. Hope you enjoy it.
Happy birthday, old friend.
-Gary
The greatest friend I have in life
Has brought me here to dwell
A while among your green green hills
And by the watery well
The waters from that wondrous well
Have made my eyes to see
And loosed my tongue to sing with joy
That such a friend can be
My greatest friend I have in life
Was hidden long from me
Above the mountains cold and wide
Beneath the sacred tree
That sacred tree whose bark I touched
Whose leaves did tell to me
The ancient tales that made me sure
My friend would come to me
The greatest friend a song has given
To sing where I may go
To sing among your green green hills
And where the waters flow
The waters from that wondrous well
Have made my eyes to see
And made my mind to ever show
My greatest friend to me

Thank you to Gibson Guitars for their generosity in helping the the Jefferson Township Arts Academy (JTAA) with two new Epiphone acoustic guitars! We were able to connect to JTAA through other schools we've donated to in Elizabeth township.
We are hearing teachers have requests from students to take guitars home to practice since most of them do not have an instrument to use at home, and these guitars were donated with that in mind. We look forward learning how these students progress throughout the school year!
š¼If you are a music director or a music teacher in the areas where Neal grew up, we would like to donate resources to your program. We have access to instruments from brands such as Fender, Martin & Zildjian, and will share this access with your students. Send us a note on our contact page: https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/contact

The Neal Casal Clinical Fellowship opportunity with Backline began accepting applications on August 26th and the quality of applicants was INCREDIBLE. We are so proud to announce that last Friday, Oct 7th Carrie Ann Flemming was chosen for this unique role to support and help grow the clinical services at Backline.
Carrie Ann will be working directly with Backlineās Clinical Director Ari Jacobson who shares, "We are beyond excited at Backline to welcome Carrie Ann as the first Neal Casal Clinical Fellow. With over 20 years of clinical experience and case management, it became clear during the interview process that not only will Carrie Ann help Backline increase the clinical services we can provide in 2023, but that Carrie Ann displayed all the qualities in a Fellow that Neal would have hoped. We wanted to give an enormous thank you to the Neal Casal Music Foundation for partnering with us to create this opportunity, and are so excited about what Backline has planned for 2023."
Our deepest gratitude to the 52 applicants & for all our supporters. This important work is only possible through your generosity. Thank you š
As the Foundation continues to grow, we wanted to share a few simple ways to support the NCMF so that we can continue making a positive difference in Nealās honor.
1. Shop in our Official Store! We have been able to develop some really special merch and 100% of net proceeds go towards our mission.
2. If you donāt need any merch, we accept donations via our website.
3. Ask your employer to match your donation - the NCMF is listed in Benevityās database & your donation can go even further when you ask your employer to match it.
4. Share our mission with your friends and family! This one is the simplest and doesnāt cost anything at all, but means so much.
Looking forward to continue sharing our progress, thank you šš¶ā¤ļø

Fare you well my honey
Fare you well my only true one
All the birds that were singing
Have flown except you alone
Going to leave this broke-down palace
On my hands and my knees I will roll, roll, roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time, in my time, I will roll, roll, roll
In a bed, in a bed
By the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
All the way back back home
It's a far gone lullaby
Sung many years ago
Mama, mama, many worlds I've come
Since I first left home
Going home, going home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
Going to plant a weeping willow
On the banks green edge it will grow, grow, grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go, the river roll, roll, roll
Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
