Hollywood Golden Era superstar, Errol Flynn owned ZACA, his much beloved 118-foot schooner rigged sailing yacht, from the mid-1940s until his death in 1959. The wooden yacht was designed by Garland Rotch and built and launched by Nunes Brothers Boat & Ways of Sausalito, CA in 1930. After Errol Flynn's passing, ZACA fell into hard times, but today is gloriously restored and calls Monaco her home port. A really great national broadcast news story giving wooden boats the recognition they deserve.

With a typical Washington thunder storm overhead the USS Sequoia, it still was a festive evening. The menu included a crabmeat appetizer, followed by roast beef, noodle casserole, and asparagus Hollandaise.
Lots of laughs and toasts, and after birthday cake at the dining table, President Kennedy opened presents in the aft salon. Then the dancing started. Pure 1960s kitsch with twist, the cha-cha, and everything in between.
I have dined onboard the USS Sequoia and a private event and it is a beautiful and shining piece of history that is very special.
President Kennedy's 46th birthday party was his last and private affair hosted by Jacqueline Kennedy and requested "appropriately festive yachting suit and dress."
The guest list was a glimpse of another era. It included family Robert and Edward Kennedy, Sargent Shriver, and their spouses, actors David Niven and Peter Lawford and friends Senator George Smathers and wife, and Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and his then-wife Toni.
Born on May 29, 1917, today would have been President Kennedy's 98th birthday. It is well known that he was a lifelong lover of boats and the sea and seized every opportunity he could to get onto the water to sail, yacht or swim. It's fitting that we share a picture of his last birthday, celebrated on the Presidential Yacht USS Sequoia on Wednesday, May 29, 1963. The USS Sequoia is a 1925 John H. Mathis Yacht Building Co. and designed by John Trumpy, Sr. The company would become the John Trumpy & Sons, Inc by 1939.
For those who haven't attended, it's a great event in a beautiful city.
Great news about St Helens
The City of St. Helens has received a $200,000 Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continue work on a waterfront redevelopment plan for the former Boise Veneer Plant and White Paper Mill sites.
The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has been providing environmental investigation oversight of the redevelopment plan.
St. Helens is one of 20 communities in the country to be awarded a grant this year for cleanup and reuse of brownfield sites to revitalize communities and strengthen local economies. The EPA made the award announcement on March 9, 2015.

With it now being "boat show season" and wrapping up the Portland Boat Show on Sunday, January 11 and the Seattle Boat Show coming up, we have "boats on the brain" and this one is a beauty! Not too many of these Chris Craft Sea Skiffs around and they are rugged lapstrake construction. Handsome contrast to the ever beautifully and elegant Constellations or Conquerors of the period.

Just want everyone to know that this is not a bottom that would fall into the flat rate for bottom washing!!
This is a great reason to have a quality bottom paint applied at the beginning of your boating season, let us know if you want more information on how to avoid this!!

September 25, 1976 ~ John Wayne attended the launch and christening of the guided missile frigate USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG 7) on September 25, 1976 in Bath, Maine. She was the lead ship of a class that is still in service with the US Navy and others. He was a platform guest because he was a board member of one of the major sub-contractors. As sometimes happened, the ship did not immediately begin to move after the champagne bottle broke on the bow, and the final wedges were removed. In response to a joking call from the crowd for the brawny film star to lend a hand, Mr Wayne pushed on the bow of the ship. It began moving. And another shipbuilding folk tale was born.

Ed Monk, Sr. began his independent career as a naval architect by designing and building his "Plan No. 1," the 50 ft. bridge-deck cruiser Nan, which became his home for seven years, moored. Monk's designs were built by many of the Pacific Northwest builders such as Blanchard Boat Co., Tolleycraft, Grandy Boat Co., Jensen Motor Boat, Chambers and Franck, Forder Boatworks, McQueen Boat Works and others. The prolific and talented naval architect designed more than 3,000 boats in his long career and his son continued Edwin Monk & Son Naval Architects, celebrating his 100th birthday in 2011.

It may be Newport Beach, California, but something that the Maritime Heritage Festival in St. Helens can aspire to...Actually the St. Helens festival brought about 55 vessels and drew 5,000 people.
Wooden boats take center stage in Newport Beach In his first year as organizer of the Wooden Boat Festival in Newport Beach, Ralph Rodheim has encountered a problem he hopes continues in the years ahead.
