Future SUNY Broome Alum:
First, we hope you are doing well and that you have settled at least somewhat into your new distance learning routine if it is new to you. For many of our students it was not an adjustment, as you were already taking online classes, but for more of you it was.
Now, why we are writing today is that we have decided to postpone our Commencement Ceremony to July 25, 2020 and we would like student input on the type of ceremony we might be able to provide. The Graduation Committee will be conducting a survey of students eligible to participate in graduation and asking for feedback on their preference for an in-person ceremony or a virtual ceremony. You will be receiving this survey via your SUNY Broome email and it will also be posted to Blackboard. We’d like to know what our about-to-be-graduates think of this. Please make sure you respond to this survey by April 24th. Your feedback is important to us!

RE: Rugby Research and Injury Prevention Group, Inc. inquiry for Data Collection at 2019 Rugby
Union 7s Series.
Dear interested students,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Kalli Segel, National Study Coordinator for the Rugby Research
and Injury Prevention Group (RRIPG), a non-for-profit organization based in New York City whose
mission is to understand injuries in American Rugby. The RRIPG, Inc. is sponsored by the Empire
Geographic Union, New England Geographic Union Rugby Football Union, and the National Operating
Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE). Additionally, we are endorsed by USA Sevens
LLC and USA Rugby to attend their events and collect data. Our group’s findings have been published in
various peer reviewed medical journals beginning with our pilot study Profile of an American amateur rugby
union sevens series (Lopez et al. Am J Sports Med. 2012) followed up with Concussive Injuries in Rugby-7s:
An American Experience and Current Review (Lopez et al. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2016) and Injury Profile of
American Women Rugby-7s (Ma et al. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2016). We are currently in collaboration with
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Auckland University, and their Sports Performance Research Institute
of New Zealand (AUT/SPRINZ).
We are currently seeking athletic trainers, physical therapists, or students in either field to cover the events
below. We would like to inquire as to whether you could represent the RRIPG at the below event this summer:

We conduct no treatment, only data collection. This experience is a great resume-builder and in the past has
facilitated interactions with some of the most prominent sports medicine physicians and researchers in the US
and NZ. It will also provide you with a glimpse into the world of research and the opportunity to work on a
research team.
Thank you for your assistance as we continue to scale and reach out to the rugby and athletic training
communities, providing educational access and opportunity. Your partnership allows us to work with
confidence in knowing that many healthcare professionals and rugby personnel will gain access to our
knowledge this year. I hope that you can help at the listed event and feel free to disseminate this information
amongst your program and other potential candidates. Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any
questions. Thank you for your interest, time and efforts in these matters.

Rugby Union is one of the most popular sports globally1, in America it is the 8th largest
team sport.2 It is predominantly played throughout Europe, and the Southern Hemisphere
countries of Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and
South Africa. Asia and North America are currently
viewed as emerging markets.3 The USA national
team, ‘The Eagles’, are currently ranked 16th in the
world.4 The Rugby World Cup in fifteens-a-side or full
rugby, which is held every four years, is the world’s 3rd largest sporting event. Rugby
after the last world cup will have a contribution to the global sports economy of
US$1.67 billion.5 Rugby Sevens (seven-player-a-side) has gained much momentum
because of its inclusion in the 2016 International Summer Olympics in Rio De
Janeiro, Brazil.
The Rugby Research and Injury Prevention Group, Inc., is a non for profit charitable
organization, formed in 2009, a result of the announcement of rugby’s inclusion in the
Olympics, and formally the Metropolitan NY RFU, Medical Advisory Board. We want to
understand the epidemiology of injuries in American rugby nationally. Our first publication
in the American
Journal of Sports Medicine was the 2nd in the world on the injuries in Rugby Sevens.6
Our second was a case study on a rugby injury.7 We
have attended many of the major American Rugby-7s
sporting events within the United States. These events
are conducted throughout the year.
• GU RFU Rugby-7s Series (4 tournaments in 2010/14), NYC area
• Territorial Union Qualifier Rugby-7s Series (2011-14), CT, MA, NJ,
NY, RI.
• National 7-a-side Club Championship (2011-13), CA, PA, WA
• All-Star Rugby Sevens Championships (2010-11), CA, NY
• Collegiate Rugby Championships (2012-14), PA
• Elite City Rugby-7s (2014), TX
• Invitational Rugby Tournament (2011-14) with greater than 3000 athletes annually, NV
Our attendance at these tournaments will be to collect injury reports first hand, to ideally obtain two goals:
1. To gain a preliminary data set to understand injury rates in our amateur to elite rugby players in America,
2. And, ascertain trends to assist in player welfare and safety.
Despite its growing popularity both in America and worldwide, the understanding and attention to rugbyrelated
injuries in North America are comparatively lacking when compared to other mainstream sports and
international rugby populations. This is due in part to the sport being viewed as a club sport at all (including
the collegiate) levels. Our goals would help us gain a foothold in creating potential interventions and protocols
to submit to the governing bodies, to foster player welfare and safety. These can be forwarded onto USA
Rugby, USA Sevens and the IRB.

Rugby union is a collision sport that has two well-known versions Rugby union and Rugby
Sevens (seven-a-side). Rugby Sevens is a faster paced version (7 players and 7 minutes-a-half),
compared to Rugby union (fifteen-a-side or full-side rugby), which is longer (40-minute halves),
and less aerobically demanding. Rugby union (full) is filled with collisions and tackles, while
Sevens usually contains more runs and sprints.
International Rugby Sevens is played in an annual Men’s Sevens World Series consisting of 8
tournaments that are hosted on 5 different continents. Competitions last from 2-3 days and teams
play an average of 3 matches; and often upwards of 6 matches in a given day. The tournaments are held in varying
climates from December to May. A Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens is held every 4 years. The last World
Cup was held in 2013. It will no longer be conducted now that the Summer Olympics will take its place.
RRIPG, Inc. requires sponsorship to ensure the Group remains at the
forefront of American rugby research. We are fortunate to have
collaborated with many entities in the United States that have parallel
views on the growth of rugby union. We have a strong board with professionals willing to share their
expertise and assist in our growth as well. Our research teams have to travel locally, regionally and
nationally to collect our data. Sponsorship is vital to our goals.
We can provide sponsors with exposure across a variety of locations and business sectors. We envision
on attending the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA), Ottawa, Toronto 7s,
thus adding international exposure.
We are based in the Northeast (with national representation) and from here we are capable of many
accomplishments regionally that would benefit rugby nationally. Given the population density in the
Boston-New York-Newark-DC corridor, the Northeast Rugby Football Union (NRU) and the
neighboring Mid-Atlantic RFU (MARFU) make up two Territorial Unions (of 7 total territorial unions
in USAR) and represent a large percentage of American Rugby.
Sponsorship is crucial for the future goals of the RRIPG, Inc. We have in place a structured business plan that would
see the RRIPG, Inc., grow to a multi-purpose entity and website, within 5 years; developing an ‘Annual Injury Course’,
guiding position statements, advising welfare, organizing possible conferences, which could cross over to other regions
countries and possibly sports and disciplines. The intention is to build a program and brand that is recognized throughout
America. As rugby grows and the 2016 Olympics approaches now is the time to prepare for our long-term presence in
American Rugby.
YEAR 1 OBJECTIVES
• Immediate obtainment of long-term sponsorship relationships
• Annual objectives
• Website Upgrading
• Develop Online Injury Surveillance Project: RISE
YEAR 2 OBJECTIVES
• Implementation of Online Injury Surveillance Project: RISE regionally
• Develop relationship with larger academic institution.
• Develop medical conference on Rugby Injuries.
YEAR 3 OBJECTIVES
• Analyze data for trends for potential policies
• Launch the Online Injury Surveillance Project: RISE nationally
• Production of prevention protocols for American Rugby.
• Financially self-sustaining.
We are non-for-profit, in the rugby community and requires sponsorships and donations to help us grow and in turn
rugby as a whole. With monthly users, we have costs like any top web site: servers, power, rent, programs, staff and
legal help. We take no government funds. We run on donations, often small. If everyone reading this gave something,
anything, we would not need to fundraise. If you feel that the RRIPG, Inc., and our website Rugbyinjury.org could be
useful to you, please take a minute to help keep it online and doing what we do best and see you at future tournaments.
Please help us forget fundraising and get back to Rugby research. Thank you, from the RRIPG, Inc.
