We at the GFA and the guitar community come together in remembrance of the great concert performer, beloved teacher, and friend Lily Afshar. We send our condolences to her family, friends, and many students. Lily had a large impact on the guitar community and will be forever loved and missed.

Lily had established herself as a prominent guitarist studying at The Boston Conservatory and New England Conservatory. She became the first woman in history to earn a doctorate in guitar performance from Florida State University. As the head of the guitar department at The University of Memphis, Lily dedicated her life and passion to inspiring the future generations of guitarists.

As a concert artist, Lily performed all over the world. Her passion for going beyond the traditional guitar repertoire resulted in notable world premieres. Lilly’s Persian heritage has given rise to some of her greatest musical innovations. Born in Iran to a musical family, she has drawn from Persian and Azerbaijani folk music traditions to create arrangements of works for the classical guitar which are as rich and beautiful as a Persian miniature.

The guitar world has lost an important figure whose impact will live on for many generations to come.

Goliath Flores is best known for his unique brand of original music, which is a blend of Latin American, Flamenco, Classical, Mariachi and styles from around the world. Those who recognize his mastery of guitar might be surprised to learn that he’s a multi-instrumentalist, having played and recorded with the guitar, piano, accordion, cello, Latin and Middle Eastern percussion, the clarinet, and various flutes from around the world, including the Duduk with its haunting sound.

His work with processed guitar is clever and compelling and this is a rare opportunity to hear Goliath in Gainesville at the Theater of Memory. He is a full time musician in Jacksonville, working with his band Mariachi Primera Costa as well as performing in numerous solo gigs. A lifelong composer and instrumentalist from Los Angeles CA, Goliath is known for playing various musical styles and wowing audiences wherever he goes.
