Alliance for Pharmacy Sustainability
APS is an UCSF School of Pharmacy registered campus organization. Our mission is to improve quality
⏰⏰⏰ Urgently seeking independent pharmacies in the San Francisco Bey Area to participate in a student-led study to help the environment ⏰⏰⏰
We are Alliance for Pharmacy Sustainability (APS), which is a UCSF School of Pharmacy campus organization that aims to reduce waste in pharmacies and educate people in our communities on proper disposal of medications and medical supplies.
Many community pharmacies do not recycle pharmacy stock bottles - these bottles are made of highly recyclable material. APS was recently awarded funding from our school to conduct a cost-analysis to determine whether recycling stock bottles will change waste disposal costs for pharmacies.
Though not much, your pharmacy will be compensated for your time and effort. We will also be providing materials and education to make the transition to recycling stock bottles easier.
Please DM us if you're interested in being part of our study! Also, share this post with those who might be interested!

April 30th, 2022 is the DEA National Drug Take Back Day!
We at APS would like to inform our patients and the public of the importance of proper medication disposal. As you scroll through, you will learn how the proper disposal of unused medications can help combat the drug overdose epidemic in the U.S. and help our environment.
Participating in the National Drug Take Back Day is simple!
1. Locate the nearest DEA drug take back site via the DEA or Department of Justice websites.
2. Prepare your pills in a zipper bag, free of any personal identifying information, or keep your creams and liquids in the original packaging.
3. Place the zipper bag of pills, creams and liquids, or inhalers into the bin.

It has been 8 months since we founded APS. We have been making progress, slowly but surely.
We have made much progress on our pharmacy stock bottle recycling project. APS would like to share that we are one of the 2022 Mary Anne Koda-Kimble Seed Award for Innovation recipients! Thank you for the committee for funding a project that allows pharmacies to have better sustainability practices. In addition, we would like to thank for the opportunity to present a poster, in-person and virtually, at the Science Policy and Ethics Symposium ( ) at UC Berkeley on 4/8/2022 hosted by Science Policy Group at UCSF and Policy Group at UCB! It was a pleasure sharing our ideas with other individuals who work in science.
We will be hosting two lunch talks targeted towards UCSF pharmacy students in the next few weeks, and also have a beach cleanup event in partnering with Pacific Beach Coalition in May.
We look forward to do more positive work in the near future!
