My parents immigrated to NZ from Scotland before I was born. I even have an island named after me. I grew up in New Zealand & always looked forward to any rewena that was available at pot lucks, weddings and tangis. About half of them were yummy. In August 2015 I was given a rewena ‘bug’. STILL DON'T GET EXCITED .... still not baking 🥹

Here's what I'm selling.

a) Turbo commercial oven + stand on wheels + extra trays (not
selling separately - I don't go energy for that). It's got a plug
- so easily unplugged and moved. We LOVE Turbo.
We haven't used our kitchen oven in about 3 years.
This baby heats up in 7 mins & you can load it chocca
& it'll bake evenly and beautifully every time.

b) Westinghouse domestic oven
only ever used for bread making 2-3 x per week. So it's a
vegan oven (if that makes anyone happy). Gas stove top
never plugged in or used. All the stovetop stuff is still new.
I got it wired to a plug - not wired into the wall so easily
removable.

c) (SOLD)3x electric woks all used, all work fine. EXCELLENT for
making a motherload of fry bread and not burning ANY.


d) Stainless steel trolley - used. Hardy as, wheels still mint
condition, incredibly helpful!

e) dough mixer - don't ask me about capacity (I'm measurement
illiterate). It says 12 cups of flour max capacity. I think it's
being shy ... I'd do 12 loaves worth of flour, sugar, water, bug
in there, easy as. Oh whoops! I just checked the photo it's
12kgs not cups 🤣 - yeah it can totally do that.

It's been a year since I had to shut down operations.

It's clear I'll never be able to go near flour dust again 😔

I've accepted it & will finally be selling my ovens, dough mixer & electric woks (those were the magic key to making 400 frybreads at a time without burning ANY).

So if you're interested or know anyone who could be interested please let me know.

I'll clean them up then post up some photos or send them privately if you're interested.

You know how I have a really soft spot for my Waihi peeps? 💞

Well, today they were amazing! I feel so loved up.
This was the last bread run out there & I’m gona miss it 😪

* Another precious gift bag with a beautiful taonga & wine
* Loads of cuddles
* I even got to finally meet FOUR of my regulars who I have awesome chats with every month but never see them cos they’re at work.

You know up to about a month ago I was secretly thinking of doing secret ninja bread runs out to you guys once a month still - just cos I didn’t wanna give it up cos you lot are so cool. But after this month …. nada 🥴 My lungs can’t handle it.

So if anyone wants to buy my business …. I can promise you, you will LOVE your monthly bread runs out to Waihi.

Rewena Lovers I have big, sad news 😢
My final bake will be Mon 31 Jan 2022.
If you want the gory deets, keep reading.
I have been diagnosed with baker’s asthma caused by inhaling flour dust for the last six years and instructed by two specialists that I need to quit.
For a few years, every time I was exposed to flour dust I’d have some symptoms. For over 18months now I’ve had constant symptoms even when I’m no where near flour. I never put my symptoms together with the baking until recently.
I had no idea that flour dust could screw up my lungs, I was wrong.
My warning to all is this; if you are genetically pre-disposed to asthma (all my siblings & parents have it, I was the only one who didn’t) - WEAR A DUST MASK when exposed to flour dust. And when you first notice symptoms, quit. Don’t wait years.
It will save your lungs.
I have absolutely LOVED being your Rewena Lady. The name came about organically due to so many kids answering doors or running down the street homeward bound yelling out “MUM! The Rewena Lady is HERE!!”
I’ve loved the chats - in person & online.
I’ve loved the banter.
I’ve loved the connections.
I love that you love the rewena I make.
And I’m gutted that you now have to go without.
I attempted to pass on the role to the next best person, but it’s not a good fit for her family right now.
I wanted to keep you supplied with the bread that brings back memories, doesn’t hurt your pukus & brings you joy.
I’ve tried to keep doing it as long as I can, but my lungs are taking the hit.
I am so sorry 😭
And I will miss you all xx
From now until 31 Jan 2022 I will bake my butt off for you and your freezers (while wearing a dust mask). Stock up while you can.

2. No yeast (the combo of no yeast & sourdough means it doesn’t hurt guts like store-bought bread)

4. These are the ingredients: flour, water, sugar, bug (flour, water, potato, , sugar, ) - that’s it
5. The bug is nearly 50 years old so has good flavour
6. It may bring back beautiful memories for them of their Nan or Aunty or someone in their past who made rewena

Our Story

My journey with Rewena…

My parents immigrated to NZ from Scotland before I was born. My name is Scottish - Islay - pronounced ‘eye-la’. I even have an island named after me.

I grew up in New Zealand & always looked forward to any rewena that was available at pot lucks and tangis. About half of them were yummy.

In August 2015 I was given a rewena ‘bug’. Soon after, our circumstances changed in a way that I needed to make more money to support my little family. I asked permission from my friend to sell rewena from the bug he gave me. Permission was granted and I started baking and selling. Within a couple of months I managed to kill that bug :(. And my mate was out of the country so I couldn’t get more.

Thankfully another friend came through for me and happily offered their bug for me to provide for my family. I was told it is about 40 years old.

I struggled for about 3 weeks to figure out how to make a good loaf of bread. I finally got consistent results that matched my tastes.

I started selling outside of my circle of friends. I sold rewena to get to Arizona to be with an old friend of mine who’s daughter is terminal. Her & I will always be grateful for the rewena that made that happen.

In November 2016 I got Council Certified and the orders are rolling in.

I enjoy the process of making rewena, but I think my favourite part is delivering it to people who love it. I am often told stories of when people last had rewena like this. Of Nans and Aunties who have since passed.

I was once told that my rewena is like a time machine - it transports people back to their childhoods.

I feel it a gift to share in those memories.

I enjoy the chats, the happiness, the connection with people who appreciate my offering.

That is a big reason why I have chosen to continue on my rewena journey. I guess I’ll keep baking it until it’s no longer sought after.
