Ideas on how to address homelessness

Churches are the most friendly places for the homeless and the best place for them to recover

Consider having a support group for family members of the homeless and get them together to help one another

Homeless members with means or family members with means?
Homeless need someone to advocate for them
Homeless need someone to take them around to the places they need to get their I.D., SSI applications, Covid shots, etc.

Homeless eventually go to school, work, volunteer, etc., do something to occupy their time

Homeless need to be identified and “documented” with as much info as possible to keep tract of their condition

Homeless need social worker type to work with them

Suggestions to family members of the homeless available? Readily available? How communicated
Co-dependency of the homeless
Team to work with the homeless: social workers, law enforcement, counselors, medic, former homeless person who identifies with the homeless

Hire ex-homeless

Catch homeless when they are “ready” to get help

Continue to work with them until they are “ready”

Research on the different homeless populations? Men, women, families, youth, handicapped
Get graduate students to do research
Get list of homeless family members willing to help

Director of sources for the homeless.
Directory of “real” sources that actually provide help identified and organized into a source book

Need for test kits for homeless to be tested and workers take them places they need to go

Make agreements with businesses to be sensitive to homeless –

Places where homeless can go to the bathroom (grocery stores, coffee shops, etc.

Drop-in places where homeless can get help

List of organizations and agencies willing to work with homeless

Identify agencies – community, local, city, county, state, federal, CBO’s, etc.

I.D. former homeless

I.D. celebrities, foundations, other potential funding sources

I. D. reporters, scientists, researchers, other valuable sources with information

Need “good” information on the homeless

What efforts have been successful with this population in other cities, state, countries, etc.

Look at other models dealing with similar populations (UNICEF, etc.)

What current effort underway in Sacramento city, county, state, national level

What are typical (hopefully simply) processes to getting things done for the homeless (i.e. getting an EBT card, I.D., food, clothing, shower, etc.

What is the process involved in obtaining housing?

Issues that homeless have: alcohol, drugs, mental illness, down-and-out, lose of home, job, spouse, etc.

“what if” questions: you have a family member who is homeless
“what if” you want to be helpful
“what if” you know of a resource for the homeless
“what if” you know of someone who is on their way to becoming homeless
“what if” you know someone who lost their job, lots home, source of income, etc.
“what if”…..

Divide city into areas and focus on working each area say a month at a time or some other time period

What are the preventative measures that can be taken to prevent homelessness

Long-time homelessness, short-timers; those in and out of a home; others about to become homeless where family is fed up, etc.

Get the homeless point of view
Why are you homeless?
What do “you” think can be done?
What do you think you need?
What would it take to get you off the street?

What are some positive qualities of the homeless

Why are homeless people so difficult to work with?
Why are homeless people not willing to accept the help that is offered
Why is homelessness so “attractive” to those who refuse to receive help
What are some features that keep homelessness “alive and well”
No responsibilities
Their own “boss”
They get to live pretty much on their own terms
Don’t have to work, no curfew, no responsibilities; able to do their own thing

What is homeless person’s biggest concerns?
What are their least concerns

Characteristics of the “typical” homeless person

Consequences of homelessness for the homeless person, for the city, state, loved ones, etc.

Documented info about homeless to date – who keeps this information?

Who is currently working on this population? What are they doing? How far have they gotten with really being helpful?

What departments work with this population and who are the specific people working with them? What are their contact information and what they offer; what has been their successes, failures and why, etc.

What current research is there available for the Sacramento area? What is planned moving forward?

Histories of 10 homeless men, women, youth, families

What is the differences for men, women, families, youth?

Get rick to appoint me to his advisory committee to deal with homeless which would give me legitimacy

Get governor and county board of supervisors to do the same

Do a story for the observer on the subject – also add legitimacy to collect information on the subject

What are organizations doing now to address the issue?

My Eleven ( #11), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Personal Initiatives, Challenges and Aspirations”

As we enter into a New Year (actually a new era), tomorrow January 1, 2021, what personal initiatives, challenges and aspirations are in store for you in 2021 (and beyond)?

For me, the beginning of a new year gives me pause and allows me to reflect on the past 12 months and consider what I want for the next 12 months and beyond.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus,” Philippians 4:19; “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord,” Psalms 31:24; “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still, ”Exodus 14:14.”

Those three scriptures tell me that all my needs will be met; I just need to hope in the Lord, and the Lord will fight for me, don’t do anything rash.

PERSONAL INITIATIVES: keep doing what worked; learn from mistakes; remember to “do things as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).

CHALLENGES will be met with renewed resolutions and my dependence on the Holy Spirit; and

ASPIRATIONS are to continue to seek and to work on His plan for my life.

On Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020 I said it would be fair to say that most people would like to have a quality life. I also said that I know a lot about living a quality life. And, for at least the next few weeks (until the end of the year), I will be writing a few paragraphs (almost every day, probably not Fridays and Sundays) on different topics related to living a quality life.

Before I go to bed, I will give a “Quality Living Tip of the Day.” A corresponding Biblical Scripture will accompany each tip, along with a research reference mostly from the book, “Healthy Living Quality Life.”

My Tenth ( #10), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Social Connection”

The most responsible social connections are done electronically or from a safe and responsible distance. Please don’t let “sheltering in place” isolate you from friends, family and other social outlets. And please don’t risk infecting someone or risk being infected yourself. Do make those social connections, responsibly!

Romans 1:11 “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you.”
Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
I Corinthians 14:26 “What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a
lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.

Social connection is not only Biblical, it is necessary for our well-being. It must be done responsibly.

James 4:7 says, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

According to Julianne Holt-Lunstad, et. al (2010) “The quality and quantity of individuals' social relationships has been linked not only to mental health but also to both morbidity (diseases) and mortality (death).”

These researchers included data across 148 studies (308,849 participants) in their study: “Social Relationships and Mortality Risk.”

In that same mega study it shows the benefits of a network of social support, including the following:
• Improving the ability to cope with stressful situations
• Alleviating the effects of emotional distress
• Promoting lifelong good mental health
• Enhancing self-esteem
• Lowering cardiovascular risks, such as lowering blood pressure
• Promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors
• Encouraging adherence to a treatment plan

Socialize responsibly!

My nineth ( #9), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Physical health”

Diet, physical exercise, sleep, non-stress; regular check-ups and regular hygiene.

I Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?

(1) Mediterranean DIET:
• Daily consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats
• Weekly intake of fish, poultry, beans and eggs
• Moderate portions of dairy products
• Limited intake of red meat

(2) PHYSICAL EXERCISE (a) cardiovascular exercise (running, speed walking, bike riding); (b) Strength building (pushups or lifting weights; (c) stretching (before, during & after exercising; (d) balance exercises (especially for older adults);

Mark Perry (2012), author of “Physical Fitness: What is Physical Fitness?” He said it is the body’s ability to function efficiently, effectively in work & leisure activities, to resist diseases and to meet emergency situations. (http://www.builtlean.com/2012/02/21/physical-fitness/).

(3) SLEEP - consistently going to bed and getting up at the same time; removing screens from the bedroom, exercising regularly during the day,

(4) having a NON-STRESSFUL LIFE. The Holy Spirit is my “go to” when I find a stress coming on.
Physical stress (from being tired)
Emotional stress (from worry and anxiety)
Social stress (from relationships)
Chronic stress – ( from continuous stress of any kind for long periods of time) to be avoided at all costs. This is dangerous!

(5) REGULAR CHECK-UPS (“physical,” eye and dental exams)

(6) REGULAR HYGIENE - Bathing, brushing & flossing teeth, grooming, changing of clothing and until we are over the Pandemic, appropriately wearing your mask, social distancing and regularly washing your hands.

My eighth ( #8), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Monday, Dec. 28, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Family Togetherness”

Genesis 2:22, “Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man,” (thus creating the first family).

However YOU define family (i.e. your parents and siblings; spouse and children; friends, or whatever), family is important and finding elements of a healthy, happy and strong family is key to living a quality life.

What makes families healthy, happy and strong? Following are two studies with advice :

(1) Seven Strategies for Building Your Family’s Resilience, by Paula Davis-Laack, a trusted expert and lawyer who is the Founder and CEO of the Stress & Resilience Institute. Says, (1) shut down catastrophic thinking; (2) create a strength family tree; (3) Grab the “good” stuff rather the “bad” stuff; (4) Encourage positive risks and discuss the lessons learned from failing; (5) rejuvenate regularly--through positive emotions like laughing and playing together; (6) Be there for each other when things go right, not just when things go wrong; (7) Allow family members to replicate successes; be specific with praise: “you must be really smart” is a better response than just saying “great job.”

(2) Identifying successful families by Krystal, M., Moore, K. A., & Zill, N. (1990), Nine traits have been found (from their research) in families of different types:• caring and appreciation; • time together; • encouragement; • commitment; • communication; • cope with change; • spirituality; • community and family ties; and clear roles.

Healthy living : what is a healthy lifestyle? 27/12/2020

My seventh ( #7), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Importance of Lifestyle”

A healthy lifestyle is a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early (World health Organization)(https://apps.who.int/iris/handle/10665/108180).

Your lifestyle is a compilation of your living conditions, habits, rituals, customs, styles and tastes. Good Lifestyle, quality living. Not-so-good, or bad lifestyle, poor quality living.

“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading (with our lifestyle) in every part of our lives” (Galatians 5:25). “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh,” (Galatians 5:16).

Personal decisions and habits that are bad, create self-imposed risks that can be detrimental to your quality of life.

For the most part, lifestyles are fairly constant and even though they do change, they do so infrequently.

My sixth ( #6), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Thursday, December 24, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Spiritual Connection”
Your spiritual connection will help get you through life’s crazy, impossible situations and anything else that life can bring. The quality of living we all enjoy is largely because of our spirit-filled lives.
The spiritual connection can do greater things beyond our imagination in order to show His Almightiness. Ephesians 3:20 says it perfectly:
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.”
God loves us and there is nothing greater than His love.
Jeff Levin, co-author of the book Divine Love (Levin & Post 2010) says it best and appropriately for today:
“To be loved by God, to enter into a mutual and covenantal relationship with the Divine, may well offer solutions to many of the current crises around the world. Only a loving relationship with the Source of being within the context of the great faith and wisdom traditions of the world can fully inform and motivate the acts of love, unity, justice, compassion, kindness, and mercy for all beings that are so desperately required to counter the toxic influences in the world.”

My fifth ( #5), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Wednesday, December 23, 2020
The Tip for Today is: “Action”

“Action speaks louder than words,” is one of my sayings.

J. D. Roth wrote an article in 2010 and updated it in 2019 titled “difference between talkers and doers.” (http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2010/08/30/action-not-words-thedifference-between-talkers-and-doers/).

One of the things that I remember about the article was his statement: “One of the biggest differences between successful people and those who aren’t is the successful don’t make excuses.” I like that.

As a matter of fact, I remember reading a book written by one of my favorite people Tony Evans, “No More Excuses.” Excuses are a copout.

In Scripture, I John 3:18 says “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” And, James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

From time to time, I find myself running late on things that I never run late on such as preparing my Sunday school lesson or I find myself being indecisive about working out on my regular workout days.

It has always been my thing to “Just do it.” I go into my “no think” mode and just do what I, myself “purposed” to do at certain times. Even though from time to time, I give myself permission to “not” be so “set in my ways” and I am late sometimes or decide to not workout on my set days. But that does not happen very often.

If you say you are going to do something, do it, when you said you were going to do it. It’s called integrity, being responsible or just “doing the right thing.”

My forth ( #4), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Tuesday, December 22, 2020

The Tip for Today is:
• “Balancing life’s challenges and opportunities”

“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading IN EVERY PASR OF OUR LIVES” (Galatians 5:25).

What we do in life is all interrelated: earning a living (financially), taking care of ourselves spiritually, physically and mentally or emotionally, interrelating with family and friends, doing things for others, managing our own personal challenges & opportunities and otherwise balancing our life and lifestyle.

M. Joseph Sirgy and J. Wu (2013) wrote the book, The pleasant life, the engaged life, and the meaningful life: What about the balanced life? In it they emphasize that to have a Balanced life, people have to be involved in multiple domains to satisfy the full spectrum of human development needs. Different life domains tend to focus on different human developmental needs. More specifically, balance contributes to subjective well-being because subjective well-being can only be attained when both survival and growth needs are met.

Some of us must be reminded of the Scripture in Psalms 127:2 “It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to His loved ones.”

What to Do When You Want to Build Better Habits But Can't Get Started 22/12/2020

My third ( #3), “Quality Living” Tip of the Day – Monday, December 21, 2020
The Tip for Today is:
Change
Now might be a perfect time to “renew our mind” and make changes in our lives that we never took the time to do because of our busy schedules, that are not so busy now. This pandemic might be what God either caused or allowed to get our attention.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the ‘renewing of your mind’” is what the Apostle Paul said in Romans 12:2, “then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Forced change like the one we are forced into with the Pandemic needs to be embraced and taken in stride or it can become more of a challenge than it needs to be. Most forced changes can become blessings in disguise, if we let them.

Since we’re going to be in this forced change for at least several more months, we have time to make some much needed changes, turning the changed behavior into a habit and making something positive out of a negative situation.

According to a study led by Dr. Phillippa Lally (European Journal of Social Psychology, 40 (6), 998–1009), it takes an average of 66 days to form a habit.

And, James Clear, noted author of Atomic Habits, selling over 3 million copies, provides great advice (http://jamesclear.com/awareness-start-better-habits). Time for a “good” change?
