MEDICAL CASE - NEW PHOTOS

*SHELTER PLEA* Birds of a FEATHER flock together! This abandoned cat is a show-stopper and PROUD of it! Let us know if you can help her! Adoption Summary:

What my friends at ACC say about me:

Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy!

I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Feather is a delightful kitty over at the Care Center where she is patiently waiting for her forever family. She is curious and very engaged with all that's going on at the Care Center. Feather peeks her head around trying to get a better glimpse of what is happening. We can just see her being endlessly entertained by a window! In addition to her inquisitive nature, Feather is always especially happy for treats and snacks. We know she will be a wonderful addition to your family.

Feather 158081

4Y ❤ Stray ❤ Female ❤ 6 lbs.

Hello, my name is Feather. My animal id is #158081. I am a desexed female tri color cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/9/2022.

Feather needs emergency placement for her severe upper respiratory infection. She is not eating and losing weight despite supportive care. She has warmed up to staff while in shelter and now leans into pets. She needs more individualized care to help her overcome her infection. This could be in a veterinary practice or as an out-patient under the supervision of a local veterinarian.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

5/31/22
Meowing by the front of the cage and starts rubbing his head on the door. He greets with his tail held high when the door opens and accepts petting, pushing up against my hand and arching his body. His tail sways from side to side excitedly, but he has potential to over-stimulate. I made sure to go slow and offered treats, which he ate. He seemed to want to jump out of the kennel but was easily blocked. Doing better already!

6/01/22
Lying in front of kennel, rolling back and forth and reaching out towards me with soft paws. He is very social and curious in his kennel and is soliciting attention constantly by reaching out, vocalizing and rubbing against the door. He remains right in front of his kennel as the cage door opens, tail raised, then allows petting along his head and body while leaning in and waving his tail back and forth. His tail waves enthusiastically and occasionally thumps it against the wall. I want to clicker train him or use treats to stop him from escalating but he does not show interest in the treats until I close the kennel door - he's too focused on me and petting. Will continue to monitor for potential overstimulation, otherwise he's doing so much better!

6/04/22
Meowing for attention by the front. He greets with tail high already swaying. He head-butted energetically when the hand was extended and allowed gentle pets along the head and back. He was rewarded with temptation treats after each petting to build tolerance. He is very lively and seems bored in his kennel. Needs daily enrichment and playtime.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:

Costello's behavior has improved with time and positive interactions. He was nervous the first couple of days but now he engages for attention.

Costello was meowing and rubbing against the door for attention during our interaction today. He greeted with tail high and immediately rubbed against the hand for pets. Costello enjoyed gentle petting along the head and back, leaning in for cheek rubs. His eyes got dilated and his tail started to sway - signs of over-stimulation - so petting was stopped to avoid escalation. Costello jumped out of the kennel to explore and allowed to be picked up and placed back inside. He continued to seek attention by reaching out and head-butting the door.

Costello seems to be a social, very affectionate and lively cat. He may need some time to adjust before he shows his true colors, so we recommend that he is started in a room then introduced to the rest of the home once calm and adjusted. Costello has potential to get over-stimulated with prolonged petting. He would benefit from daily playtime and enrichment for help him release him energy in an appropriate manner since he is a lively kitty. Costello should go with experienced cat parents.
