Some great tips!

I’m resharing this as we have entered the final term of the school year (here in the UK), the children are getting tired and we are heading into the school testing and exam period.

After school restraint collapse is real!

I would spend 6 hours in school
trying to conform. Concentrating so much more than my peers just to write a simple question, answer easy maths questions and fighting to make myself understood.

As soon as I walked through the door I would be loud and boisterous (not the timid Mikey that everyone at school knew).

My mum’s solution?

Open the back door come rain or shine and let me jump on my trampoline for at least 20 minutes. She would wait patiently until I had self regulated, was more chilled and was ready to tell her about my day.

I am not saying that this would work for everyone but it worked for me. We found what worked and went with it. πŸ’™

5 QUICK TIPS FOR A SMOOTHER MORNING START:
1. A good day starts the night before. So at the end of each school day or before going to bed each night, reset your school spaces. Tidy up. Look over the day's plans and prepare/set out any items that will be needed for tomorrow's lessons so you're not scrambling trying to find them all at the last minute.

2. Create a "Good Morning" board that lists off any personal items your kids should do before the homeschool day officially starts. Post the board in a communal location for all to see. (Draw prompts in pictures for non-readers.) These can include things like eat breakfast, read your Bible, make your bed. Stop nagging and just point to the board when needed.

3. So much anarchy happens when kids don't know what is expected of them beforehand. So be sure to have a morning meeting each day to announce any special happenings they need to be aware of like doctor's appointments, extra chores that need to be done, or after-school events. I peg family announcements to our normal Morning Time each day.

4. Instead of shouting, "It's time to start the day!" select a song for the year to be played at the start of each school day. (We're currently using Battle Songs by Phil Wickam.) Train your kids to know that they need to wrap up what they are doing by the song's end and join you in the school area (For us, it's the living room.) to start the day.

5. End your "together" time with 10-15 minutes of silent reading or a short read-aloud so that no matter how the Morning Time began, it can end on a calming note.

What would you add to this list? What are some habits that you've implemented that have helped you to have a smoother start each day?
