Nestled in the heart of Dushanbe’s Victory Park stands the Victory Monument, commemorating the USSR’s soldiers who fought to defend the union during the Second World War.

We’re continuing our adventures through Mongolia with a visit to the traditional Naadam festival in the ancient capital of Kharkorum - a great chance to mix with local people during their most important ceremony!

The sun sets on another adventurous day on tour with Absolute Nomads. Today, we traded the vast expanse of the Mongolian steppe, bristling with local life (and plenty of Yak) for the great expanse of the Gobi Desert. Our stop tonight is an oasis amidst the gravel and sand near the ruins of the Ongii Temple, or Ongiin Khiid.

As if Mongolia couldn’t get more beautiful, today we visited the Tovkhon monastery, one of the oldest in the country, and, with the help of the local monks, climbed up the rocks behind the temples for this incredible view of the surrounding countryside!

On tour in Mongolia once again this week! Staying in a beautifully appointed Ger camp on the fringes of the Hustai National Park, home to the world’s only true wild horses!

Buried amidst the rubble of Mongolia’s king-abandoned Soviet buildings are some hidden gems, such as this mural painted on a wall of one of the bedrooms!

Uzbekistan is home to hundreds of thousands of historical sites, once being home to the seat of the great Persian Empire, with many of its ancient cities and citadels uncovered by the Soviet Union during the days of the Uzbek SSR!

Despite what you may think, you can travel extensively across North Korea during your trip - this tunnel-with-flag motif is found along the Pyongyang-Wonsan highway as you head from the capital towards the East Coast!

Perhaps one of the greatest symbols of the Mongolian nomad is the famed Mongolian Eagle Hunter - despite the fact that many of them are in fact Kazakh!

This week we’ve been venturing through Mongolia’s past as a Soviet satellite, from breaking into long-abandoned aircraft hangers, climbing around military family apartment blocks, and discovering the remains of fighter aircraft, this week has been a true red adventure!

Mongolia Soviet Tour: Day 3

Compared to Ulaanbaatar, the southern city of Sainshand is a quiet desert town with beautiful Soviet architecture punctuated with new, modern developments.

The city is also home to the ruins of a Soviet Military base filled with hidden treasures!

We’re on our way deep into the Gobi Desert in search of Mongolia’s Soviet legacy! Starting with the overnight leg on one of the country’s Soviet-era trains!

Whilst the Darvaza Gas Crater may seem imposing, incredible, awe-inspiring, and much more at night - during the day it takes on a new quality, a strange burning pit in the midst of the deep Turkmen desert. A true natural (or not-so-natural) wonder!
