They had been lovers a long time, Venus and Mars.
At first, as it is with many great love stories, he worshiped her. Surrendered his armor for the grace of her arms. Chose the succulence of Love instead of War.

They were delicately balanced and complete. The She and He of their lives was perfect.
But warriors, as he was, are also enraptured of hard edges. Hopelessly tangled in the web of struggle. They must fight. Soon he was lost to her delicious curves. Soon he was redressed in his armor. When he came to her couch at night the armor stayed in place.

She could not feel his skin.

The Battle became his lover and the Battle would not let him rest.
She could see that he was resigned to exhaustion. He would not allow her melody to lull him. Where she was once plump and joyful there now lived a dry river bed.

It was at this point, tiptoeing on the edge of hopelessness, that she felt who she was. Her love of herself flooded in and her love of him, as he was a part of her. She would not let the Battle take the Love. The Battle would ALWAYS be there and she finally felt who was really in charge.

Not the Battle, not the struggle of life, and not her lover – Mars. She, Venus, was the General. The one to direct what Mars should be fighting for, her deepest desires.
Summoning her powers of seduction, her innate knowing of sweet rejuvenation, and her will to have Love above all else – when Mars returned that night he had no hope of resistance.

Venus carried him off of his stead, bedraggled in his muddy armor, and took him straight to her bed. A couch is no place for real Love. There she washed his aching body with scented water. There his wounds were tenderly healed. He rested in her lovely arms, deeply.

She kept him there for days, wrapped in her ways. When he felt called to the Battle she looked into his heart and said, “Not yet, my love, not yet.”

There are different mounds within a hand – each with a mythological name that represents a different energy, or set of skills, to which we need to be paying attention.

The bigger a mound is in the hand the more time one is supposed to spend doing activities that correspond.

Mars is the area that sits above Venus. Venus is much bigger in size than Mars and yet we typically spend a lot more time doing Mars activities than we do Venus activities.

Mars holds the warrior energy. The energy that goes out into the world every day and makes things happen! The part of us that knows how to fight for what we want.

So often, though, we don’t really know what we want. We just keep showing up and swinging our sword to make a living, stay afloat, keep going no matter what. Exhausting.

If our warrior selves don’t have the “right fight” to engage in, life can feel like an endless struggle.

Finding the right career, project, idea that deserves our protection and energy comes from the dance between Venus and Mars (more on that in another post, soon.)

So, what can we do in the meantime to get positive Mars energy flowing?
Engage the warrior-self in activities like these:

* kick a heavy bag (or your couch)
* wrestle a loved one
* punch a pillow
* box with a sparring partner (or the air, Covid-safe)
* dig a hole and plant a tree
* do a hard workout
* practice martial arts
* chop wood

Ideally feeling your body/mind push, pull, exert and be in opposition to another force helps to ignite positive Mars energy.

If that isn’t possible because of physical restrictions, or living alone, here are some other activities to try:

* dance/listen to a punk rock song
* walk up a hill
* scream in the car (or a cave🤔)
*play Chess (or Battleship)
* strike a power pose (with a cape is even better!)

Getting in touch with healthy Mars energy is vital, invigorating and hopefully fun!

Venus is the big winner in size, the fleshy base of the thumb, so we humans should be spending a good deal of time everyday indulging in Venus activities.

Venus activities are rejuvenative.
They are the things we do to replenish our bodies and souls.
They are the things we cut out of our busy schedules all the time.

They are things our “Inner Big Mama” knows how to do.

Venus activities could include:

*eating delicious food
*spending time in a tree
*reading an excellent book
*making art – plays – music
*mountain bike ride
*rebuilding a classic car
*standing barefoot in grass
*soaking in a luxurious bath
*doing anything with chocolate

In the best of times it is hard to incorporate these kinds of activities into our days, and these are not the best of times for many of us. And, these activities take time.

Previously unimaginable stressors are now everyday facts. Keeping a roof overhead, food on the table, and insanity at bay were very feel challenges in the before times and now in Pandemic times even more.

So, how do we surrender to Venus and give ourselves over to her beauty and caring, especially if we can’t give ourselves an extended amount of time to do so?

Taking tiny moments to indulge our appetites for beauty.

Calling an internal mind-break from worrying, fear, grief or whatever your flavor of stress, for a few minutes and giving yourself a Venusian gift.

These Venus activities could be:
*a cup of tea
*kissing your dog’s nose
*snuggling your cat’s neck
*using one of those head scratcher things
*texting I love you
*asking a friend for a quick pep talk
*mini dance party (just one song)
*child’s pose
*posing your child (playing a quick “make a statue game”)
*running around the block
*staring out the window

5 minutes at a time. These moments matter.
