Leather Education of the day: The 4 Most common types of leather and how to identify them.
Full Grain:
This is the best of the best when it comes to leather, and is equally expensive. Nothing is done to the hide to improve it. The easiest way to determine if leather is full grain is by looking for scars and small imperfections. When a cow is bitten by an insect or scratches itself on a fencepost, it can wind up with a scar just like a human. These natural imperfections are the hallmark of a great leather. Because it has not had anything done to it, the leather remains strong and will not wear out over time.
Top Grain:
Though it sounds like it's the best, top grain leather is, in reality, a step below full grain. It has had the "split" layer separated away from the "top grain" layer.1 After the hide is tanned but before it is colored, it is lightly sanded to remove most of the imperfections. This also removes some of the feel and the grain of the leather, causing it to feel and look slightly like plastic. It will eventually wear out, however, because of the sanding, and it will not develop a beautiful patina over time. This is a popular form of leather because it is less expensive than full grain. Take caution, however. Some dealers will still charge full grain price assuming their customers don't know what top gran means.
Corrected Grain:
Look at the skin on your arms for a moment. See the wrinkles in between your hairs? That's the grain of your skin. A cow's skin also has it, only much larger and more noticeably. When a cowhide is sanded or buffed to remove the imperfections, the grain may be removed as well. When this happens, the hide looks lifeless and dull. As a result, it may be stamped or embossed with a fake grain to make it look more realistic. An example of this is leather found in cars. It's not very good leather, and doesn't age well.
Bonded Leather:
The bottom of the barrel in the leather industry. Essentially, bonded leather is nothing more than leather scraps that have been glued (bonded) together to form something resembling leather. Think of it as particle board. Furniture made of sawdust and glue has a reputation for being cheaply made. The same goes for bonded leather. It will wear out very quickly and will not stand up to any damage. It is incredibly inexpensive compared to other forms of leather, which makes it very popular. If you're trying to decide between bonded leather and fabric, choose the fabric if you have durability concerns.
