Please teach your children compassion for other children, but particularly those with special needs.
Two neighborhood boys were playing basketball in the street yesterday, as we were taking down Christmas decorations. Not realizing I was in the garage, they asked my 7 year old son if he wanted to play.
My son was so excited that they asked him to play. His biggest desire is to have friends and... "be like the other boys."
He immediately responded, "Sure!"
Then one boy said, "Well, go up in your room then."
Confused and hurt, my son went in the house. I listened as they laughed and said, "He's probably up in his room right now."
The "joke" lasts for a minute, but the impact lingers long after, on the child and parent.
Imagine their surprise when I walked out of the garage and reprimanded them. But it's not my responsibility.
Yes, I will do my part. I will educate your child about autism. I will answer any questions they may have. I will welcome your child in my home to play. I will respect him and treat him as I do my own children.
But please, do your part too. Make it one of your New Year's resolutions.
