"Phantom Limb"—Danielle Ezzo & Sophie Kahn
December 15, 2016 from 6–9pm
"Phantom Limb" is the new prothesis. It draws attention to the evolving post-digital landscape in relationship to the self. How do we define ourselves physically, socially, or psychologically through the immaterial medium of digital technology? How do those technologies express themselves in the real world? The trace of these imperfect processes is something that Danielle Ezzo and Sophie Kahn’s work have in common. Both beginning with photographic technology, they inspect the artifacts of the human form. The imperfection and fragility of both body and tool have a strange symbiotic connection.

"In ‘Heterotopias’, I work within a hybrid genre of narrative painting, in our collective history. Embracing Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias as sites that mirror, distort, and invert other spaces, my painted gestures bear the uniform of regional textile designs; referring to a worldwide textile trade that for centuries has been a complicated narrative of migration, hierarchy and power. The trade assigned the various Easts with exotic mystery, and supplanted it significantly as the other. The nonverbal aesthetics of textiles transcends language barriers, yielding notable capacity to be culturally absorbed. The movements become phantoms to the chords of colonialism and conflict, creating a labyrinth of violence, migration and coupling. The paint and space coalesce, creating an entanglement of our eternally diasporic, global world. ."—Lien Truong

"Known as 'the language of flowers,' floriography is a form of coded communication that was popular in Victorian times. Botanical species were assigned sentimental meanings that were collected in exhaustive dictionaries, the blooms’ symbolism varying in tone from sweet to sinister. ‘Message’ depicts the American Sign Language gesture for ‘vagina’, complimented by a bearded iris (indicating ‘I have a message’) and a bloom of justicia (‘the perfection of female loveliness’)." —Karen Azoulay

Reception Tonight 7-10pm for "Heavy Petting" by Leah DeVun and Riitta Ikonen
"There is something q***r about loving your pets too much. Having too many pets, talking too much about them, being too crushed by their loss is embarrassing -- even abnormal. The slippery slope argument that the next step after legal gay marriage will be human-dog or -cat marriage shows how q***rness and animal-love are connected in our consciousness. Yet our love for our pets is all over our Facebook feeds, on YouTube, in the money we spend on animal sweaters, gourmet pet food, cat reiki. “Heavy Petting” is in sympathy with lolcats, Tindog, bears, otters, horsewomen, cat-ladies, pet celebrities, rabbit enthusiasts, and user-generated content. It is influenced by artists like Linda Montano, Carolee Schneemann, and Ana Mendieta, who transformed themselves into animals as feminist or spiritual practice, and who made their interspecies intimacies public. Through assemblages that merge human and animal, pet and owner, animate and inanimate, this group of sculptural and photographic works by Leah DeVun and Riitta Ikonen takes stock of our intense affections for pets."
