Martina Claussen & Katharina Klement
ALCHEMICAL ALLURES
lp/dl

»Alchemical Allures« is the first album by the duo Claussen/Klement, founded in 2019.

With a unique instrumentation of voice, objects, zither and electronics, the artists have created a soundscape composed of field recordings, vocal and instrumental elements as well as electronically generated sounds and noises.

All the tracks on this album were recorded during a residency at the Center National de Création Musicale GMEA in Albi-Tarn in July 2022.

RENT - Kill A Phantom
lp/dl

New Release by Rent out now!
Available via bandcamp.

Rent ist the pseudonym of artist and ecologist Katrin Euller. Rent’s sounds refer to industrial ecosystems, interconnections, dark landscapes and their stories and the stories of those who inhabit these places. At the same time, it is the processes of sound creation itself that emerge in Rent’s compositions: sounds influence each other, reinforce each other, cancel each other out, dissolve and become noise, sound like the city, a car alarm for example. Then everything gets lost in the fog again.

schtum - SKULPTUR

New digital RELEASE today!

Available via Bandcamp >> find Link in Bio

SKULPTUR captures a live performance of the Viennese duo in a studio environment. Equipped with electric guitar and bass, they introduce live re-sampling techniques and heavy use of stereo panorama effect pedals to weave layers of fluid rhythmic structures. This sculpture of sound is constantly morphing but never ceases to exist. Blasting clouds of distorted harmony, schtum are reimagining their own narrative of epic storytelling.

Lukas König on his release:
The process initially began with the purchase of a Marimbaphone by my grandfather Anton Koenig for me in 2004 whence deciding between Classical Percussion or Jazz Drums for my studies.

Since I ultimately chose the latter, this alien object was awkwardly lingering around my various apartments and rehearsal rooms in Vienna for almost 20 years. In 2022, I picked it up and started practicing with 4 mallets and a knowhow of morphing rhythms and ideas. Moreover, the composing process began to sample all the moments, where the 3 Freeze pedals bled into each other and created roomy drones. These “Freezes“ were again sought out and produced with my not-long-ago-created “amplified cymbal” sounds and a bunch of synthesizers, like the Prophet5, to create an album-length piece of music. At the end of the process, I wanted to dedicate this to my grandfather, who taught me drums, and so much more about music and life.

INGRID SCHMOLINER - MNEEM

available as fine art pigmentprint & download

The composer and pianist Ingrid Schmoliner writes and plays music the allure of which cannot be resisted. Her pieces are ecstatic cascades of sound which unite formal strictness and psychoactive effects. Her new work MNEEM is a musical monolith. It is a breathtaking one hour plus tour de force through complex uptempo pattern, played on the prepared grand piano.

MNEEM is available as a high quality fine art pigment print on Photo Rag Baryta paper, size 30,7 x 30,7 cm (vinyl sized) with download code as well as a digital release.
There are 15 different prints that are only available twice in this edition.
All the stones were collected by the artist from rivers and the sea on her travels. Those are stones that accompany Ingrid Schmoliner with beauty/haptics/ depth and consciousness. On each print it is written from which water and landscape those stones were found.

Debut Album by TEARING is out today.

The collaboration between Lens Kühleitner (Lan Rex) and Manu Mayr began in spring 2022. From an initial meeting, a shared vision for a new joint project quickly emerged.

In their work, the two musicians deal with the hyperreality and artificiality of sounds. They draw on the rich potential of their diverse musical roots and skillfully move from ethereal clearness to sophisticated sound collages. TEARING irresistibly pulls the listener into an immersive space, takes them by the hand and inevitably releases them back into silence.

New album BAJO by Billy Roisz is out now!

***

Billy Roisz has been a driving force in the experimental music scene for many years. She is widely known and has earned critical acclaim for her artistic work, which ranges from cinematic to pure audio-works, as she presents with this new album. Her last solo-release »Walking The Monkey« dates back to 2012 (Editions Mego) and now she unveils her successor: »BAJO«

A sonic exploration of double bass from a nosey and refreshingly innocent point of view.

FRAGILITY OF SOUNDS made it in The WIRE Magazine's top 50, very close to top ten to be exact, thank you !!

>>

https://ventil-records.bandcamp.com/album/fragility-of-sounds

The music released on this album was composed and performed over the years 2019–2021 within the framework of the artistic research project »On the fragility of sounds«.
This project listened into intersections of contemporary composition, music theatre, and feminist practice from a unique position: from the position of the artist themselves while being at work.

>> Elisabeth Schimana

>> Séverine Ballon

>> Pia Palme

>> Sonja Leipold

>> Molly McDolan & Ana Inés Feola

>> Rosie Middleton

>> Schallfeld Ensemble

As the title indicates, possible themes for this compositional exploration were interactions, relationships, and interferences between sounds and space, movement, bodies, cultures, and politics. What are we exploring when we approach sounds as fragile?

The artists Electric Indigo a.k.a. Susanne Kirchmayr, Elaine Mitchener, Elisabeth Schimana and Séverine Ballon were invited to compose and realise music around the fragility of sounds - alongside the initiator and main researcher of this project, composer/performer Pia Palme. All of them were informed about the theme and chose their unique, individual approach. They were free to determine the format and duration of their piece while observing their own process.

Subletvis >>Not The Whole Truth>
https://subletvis.bandcamp.com/album/not-the-whole-truth

How often do we hear a familiar refrain in a completely new song? Do we want to be constantly surprised while longing for the familiar? Part diary, part travelogue, "Not The Whole Truth" explores the themes of memory and emotional affect. Mo Nahold uses his online Subletvis moniker to further thread the line between abstract electronic composition and melodic hooks. Where Tremors, his previous solo effort, had a more conceptual angle channeling a similar approach through a wide range of dynamics and an emphasis on creating an acute sense of space with special mixing and recording techniques, "Not The Whole Truth" focuses on the sentiment. Seductive harmonic lines capture moments and feeling frozen into sonic amber, as Nahold records snapshots from various ideas, live sets and travels. While the core of the album was recorded during a residency at EMS Stockholm, he also draws inspiration from rave and metal, melding the harsher edges of Tremors into powerful ‘80s sci-fi synths, equal parts tribute and pastiche. “Raveon” cleverly uses ‘90s rave elements to create steep, repetitive crescendos that eschew traditional dancefloor patterns, leading to a series of buildups teasing an elusive drop never to materialize, like club flotsam from the future. Tracks like “Screen Island”, leaning on vaporwave sensibilities, or “Entity”, with its distorted harpsichord melody, are the more deliberately nostalgic offerings. Baroque hyperpop hybrid “Core” featuring Vienna based artist Tony Renaissance is where Nahold’s knack for addictive melodies truly shines, with powerful synth chords converging towards an outsized sound. "Not The Whole Truth" has a sweeping sense of drama gradually unfolding over a series of kaleidoscopic tracks that, while feigning recognition, continue to escape categorization.

SUBLETVIS:

Mo Nahold is a sound artist and composer based in Vienna, Austria. Sound is the main focus of Nahold’s work, whether as part of audio-visual installations, multi-channel compositions, performances or the standard stereo album format. Digital alienation, nostalgia, sonic hybrids and spatial acoustic environments are recurring themes in his work, exploring constant reconfigurations of existing aesthetics in often oxymoronic couplings. His compositions merge various forms of electro-acoustic elements with repetitive melodies and high-strung dramatic harmonies, bridging the gap between rhythmic exploration, abstract sonic objects and pop sensitivities. In constant flux, Nahold’s work inhabits the margins of various genres and compositional approaches without ever committing to a single one. His music has been released on labels such as Ventil Records, Parken and Denovali. His debut album Tremors was released by Ventil Records in 2019. Forthcoming album Not The Whole Truth, under his Subletvis moniker, takes an emotive approach to his genre-bending compositions, exploring themes such as memory, remembrance and personal history.

FRAGILITY OF SOUNDS - OUT NOW

The music released on this album was composed and performed over the years 2019–2021 within the framework of the artistic research project »On the fragility of sounds«.
This project listened into intersections of contemporary composition, music theatre, and feminist practice from a unique position: from the position of the artist themselves while being at work.

In cooperation with the composers, the ensemble Schallfeld, based in Graz, Austria performed, premiered, and recorded the commissioned ensemble works featured on this album. Due to the pandemic crisis, composers had to communicate online at times, and some of the works could not be performed in public.

In this singular research setting, the artistic process of the composer/performers themselves was at the core of this exploration. Anchored to the Center of Gender Studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the project was conducted by Palme in collaboration with the musicologist and cultural worker Christina Fischer-Lessiak, with funding by the FWF Austrian Science Fund (PEEK AR537) and additional monies from the Mariann Steegmann Foundation and the Land Steiermark (Province of Styria). Further research associations included the theatre scholar Irene Lehmann. Palme also composed pieces for music theatre, such as WECHSELWIRKUNG (2020), which are not covered in Ventil’s album.

One could say, the processes of the artists Palme, Schimana, Mitchener, Kirchmayr, and Ballon, composing and realising their music, served as living case studies for »On the fragility of sounds«. It was central that the composers themselves would reflect on their own practice and observations. Interviews, panel discussions, lectures, and concert talks offered platforms for communication, discourse, and exchange.

The book »Sounding Fragilities. An Anthology« (Lehmann & Palme 2022) published by Wolke offers insights into the field of exploration and the research findings, featuring over twenty contributions by composers, performers, musicologists, and theatre scholars—including, for example, Malik Sharif, Chaya Czernowin, Liza Lim, Gérman Toro Pérez, Suvani Suri, and Veza Fernández. Artist Susanne Kirchmayr wrote her essay »The development of Brittle. On the delicacies of minerals« about her work as composer/performer for this anthology.
