I think there is one important component missing from these suggestions regarding the formative assessment of writing - have students resubmit their writing. A high school English teacher once told me that her students were encouraged to submit all written assignments twice. The first submission was graded and quality feedback provided. Students were then encouraged to resubmit, after having applied the teacher's feedback and their original grade was changed to reflect the hopefully improved submission.

In a recently published study in the journal npj Science of Learning, researchers have discovered a significant relationship between the way children tell stories and their reading abilities.
