We received contributor copies for the anthology with our newest short story. This collection is based on the exciting RPG fantasy world of THRONE & BONES created by Lou Anders. We are grateful to be in this book with some great fantasy writers. It will be available in September. The cover is reminiscent of some nights at DragonCon with Lou and some of the other authors in the anthology many moons ago.

After The Con (Episode 4) 20/08/2020

After every convention, authors would flock to the bar to talk about the day's events. But without conventions this year, authors are finding new ways to have those conversations so we can stay connected and talk about fun writing stuff. This time out we're with Brian Anderson, Michael J. Sullivan, Robin Sullivan, and Keith DeCandido, talking about everything from mountain homes to the comic industry to writing fantasy novels.

From THE KINGMAKERS: VAMPIRE EMPIRE Bk. 3

“Sir, with all due respect, I know common wisdom has always been that the Cape Fear signaled the end of the frontier, and the beginning of vampire territory. But these people here are not animals. They may have been poor and oppressed, peasants really, but they are humans.”

“I never expected this.” The senator’s hands tightened into fists, and Stoddard actually thought his commander would strike him. “I raised you up from nothing. Put you one step from the center of power in the American Republic. And this is how you repay me?”

“Senator, I’m not trying to defy you, but it is my job to advise you. I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t speak my mind.”

“When has it ever been your job to advise me? Your entire job consists of doing what I say. And I say there are no humans here!”

The major tightened his mouth in an angry slash. “I disagree, sir. I feel I must tell you that, in my opinion, we have caused the deaths of many thousands of human beings here in Wilmington.”

Clark breathed out harshly. “And if we did, what of it? This is a war, Major. You expect me to take this continent away from those monsters without killing a few people? Please, advise me about that.” Before Stoddard could respond, the senator swept the doll off the table. “Maybe you need to join up with the Equatorians and take orders from that girl. She intends to win a war without killing anybody. Perhaps you would enjoy a life of tea parties in Alexandria and endless chitchat. I’m not sure there’s a place for you in my army.”

“It isn’t your army, Senator. It is the American army, and I’m an American. My constitutional oath requires that I speak.”

“Don’t you dare cite the constitution to me! My father helped
rewrite the constitution!”

Masks & Malevolence: Beasts of Cairo (Frost & Filigree Book 2) 23/02/2019

Our friend Natania Barron has a new book out. It's historical fantasy with unusual characters, exotic settings, and luscious prose. This is book 2, so get book 1 first.

Masks & Malevolence: Beasts of Cairo (Frost & Filigree Book 2) Our monstrous heroes -- Waldemar, Goodwin, & Crane -- have suffered an unimaginable loss. Happy Solstice. The longest night of the year. The most exciting night for vampires.

23/11/2018

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Grateful that our problems are problems that money can fix. Would be grateful for fewer problems and more money, but whatever... Grateful for a potentially exciting breakthrough on the new novel while driving home from Thanksgiving dinner. Would be grateful if it didn't require a major rewrite of a manuscript we've worked on all year but whatever... Grateful for a warm place to live, a job, a writing career I love, readers who love what we write, a cat who meows and purrs, and a wife who appears to love me for some reason. And there's pie in the house.

Marvel Remembers Stan Lee 12/11/2018

Susan and I were and are big comic book fans. We've told the story many times of how we met because of X-Men #201. We were lucky enough to meet Stan Lee at our first DragonCon back in the late 1980s. That was before his return to prominence as the grand old man of comics and the beloved cameo star of the Marvel movies. He was standing by himself waiting for an elevator. No crowds. No nothing. It was like nobody recognized him. When we spoke to him, he turned on the "Stan the Man" charm. It was a blast. In the years since whenever we saw him at conventions, he was a superstar and surrounded by an entourage. Susan and I owe a lot to our love of comics, particularly Marvel Comics. That means we owe a lot to Stan Lee. Thanks, Stan. Nuff said!

Marvel Remembers Stan Lee Today, Marvel Comics pauses and reflects with great sadness on the passing of its Chairman Emeritus, Stan Lee.

It's our 23rd anniversary. We first met when Susan bought a copy of X-Men 201 at the bookstore where I worked. Later we found out we shared a love of comics and fantasy-adventure stories. Later we were in the same RPG group for much of the last 30 years. Later we wrote together about vampires, magic, and superheroes. Relationships can never be just fantasy and adventure, but if you're lucky, those are the first things that come to mind when you think back later.

Happy Halloween from dripping, humid North Carolina. Even the miserable weather won't stop us from decorating. Maybe someday soon it will feel like autumn...

Princess Adele to Empress Adele. We love the changing face of our heroine in Chris McGrath's art. That first version of Adele was willful but still finding her way, sometimes impulsive, unsure how to do the right thing. The older Adele knows her mind and has no time for your crap. Unafraid of struggle. Committed to justice. Powerful but never cruel. Firm in her ideals, but willing to learn. That's a good path for anyone.
