Our "Did You Know..." for November 14 is: Lacrosse was a sport first played by Native Americans in the Southeast, especially by the Choctaw. French explorers took the sport back to Europe, where it was actually given the name “lacrosse.”
Middle school girls from around Lake County, including recent Shiloh Park Middle School student Anita, gathered at Vernon Hills High School for the county’s STEM for Girls event on November 4.
Students across ZESD 6 could try healthy snacks like local butternut squash and granny smith apples on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
Our "Did You Know..." for November 10 is: More than half of the US states have names based on Native American languages. For example, Illinois is from the Native American word "ilhiniwek" or "illiniwek". "Illini" meant "man" and the ending made the word plural. The French would later change the word to Illinois.

Our "Did You Know..." for November 7 is: When English explorers first arrived in North America, their first encounters were with the Algonquian people. Not surprisingly, many Algonquian words were adopted by the English, including chipmunk, pecan, and skunk.
SPMS 8th-grade students took a break from Mr. Pfeifer's Social Studies class to enjoy orange peppers during the Fresh Fruits and Veggies Program this week.

The ZESD 6 music team met for professional development to share ways they help students prepare for performances build confidence, and evaluations. As a part of their professional development, they brought music they plan to have students perform and practice playing together.
Digital Citizenship Week was October 16 -20, 2023.
Our 6th graders at Shiloh Park Middle School learned different ways to stay safe online and created posters or gifs that could be used to help others be safe. Poster Contest Winners' creations were displayed around the school and shared with our K-5 schools.

On Saturday, October 14, students from West, Elmwood, and SPMS attended an ILMEA District Elementary Music Festival.
The Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program offered our students the opportunity to try out locally harvested beets and clementine oranges.

Students across the sixth grade at SPMS spent their ELA period reading from the beginning of class until the end. The goal of the marathon reading session was to assess reading stamina as increasing reading stamina through the practice of daily independent choice reading is an instructional focus in ELA.
The week's sample fruits and vegetables were locally harvested radish coins and pineapples. ZESD 6 students enjoyed the offerings on Tuesday and Thursday and are looking forward to next week's selections.
Everyone is invited to the ZCMS/BPAC Hispanic Heritage Celebration at Zion Central Middle School on Friday, October 13, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The event will have an expo, food, performances, and learning resources for families. There will also be a raffle. See you there!
Our "Did You Know..." for October 12 is: At eight years old, American Sylvia Mendez was at the center of the first school desegregation case in the U.S., Mendez v. Westminster. The 1947 decision ruled that the segregation of Mexican students was unconstitutional. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and SPMS supports the cause by designating Wednesday, October 18, 2023 as Pink Out Day. SPMS faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to wear as much pink as possible to increase awareness and stand in solidarity with those fighting cancer and the warriors who have survived cancer.
Our "Did You Know..." for October 10 is: Mario Molina is a Mexican scientist and chemist. As a young boy, he became interested in science and created a chemistry lab in the bathroom to experiment. In 1995, Molina won a Nobel Prize for researching how manufactured compounds affect the ozone layer.
The Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program at ZESD 6 had another successful week. This week, students had the opportunity to try locally harvested green peppers and cantaloupe.
Thirty-eight ZESD 6 seventh and eighth-grade students from SPMS and ZCMS (right side of the video) joined other middle school students from the area for a ZBTHS Band Night.

Thank you to all parents and families who attended parent-teacher conferences throughout ZESD 6. It was an excellent opportunity to talk to teachers and keep up to date with individual student progress.
