Andrea Boyle Photography
I am a fine art photographer located in Southern Oregon.
A couple interesting blade swoops from November 2021. I'm looking back on a lot of images that didn't get posted. Not because they are "b-rolls" but because I have been lazy and wondering which way my photography is going. I had a couple upheavals last year which disrupted things that didn't help. Anyway, here you go...
Too many light painting images not making it on FB, so I'm going to try adding some from time to time on this page. These were done with a simple white blade with my short, white "Spiffy Gear LED" light attached. What makes the color? Well, I sandwiched a bunch of colorful scraps of gels in between two pieces of clear packing tape and then cut it to make a modifier over the lights. Then, I attached the LED panel to the blade with black hair ties.
My fellow lightpainter, Eric Paré in Montreal, recently spoke to M.I.T about what he does with his Bullet-Time photography. it was a fascinating interview! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anRzLC0bNZw

I took these the night before our valley became an inferno of smoke and fire. I have not been out to do any light painting since as our air quality is so thick with smoke, it is considered hazardous to breathe. These were done with two Saif Bold blades inserted into a KYO from Liteblades. One blade was colored with a gold art pen and the other a purple . (I usually use Sharpies but sometimes other "art markers" work better because of their extended color range. All can be cleaned with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser.)
The image from this video is the new "cover" for Tube Stories #184. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysgeM3mg_RY) I made it after upgrading my version of Virtual.Ink. (See Tube Stories #183 for those) The tool used was my usual KYO/Liteblade combo, but in this case, I used a "first generation" Liteblade (One blade only and not detachable) with a CD attached to it. In the interview, Eric Paré and I talked about the new updates to Virtual.Ink, our mutual interest in wine (I live in a big viniculture area of Oregon) and our cars (at least mine is still running!) -- Oh, and if anyone is interested in being in the Virtual.Ink User group on FB, please let me know in the comments and I will send you an invite.

Next up, another fun video I contributed to... I hope I can do more as it is challenging and within my current scope of photography. For the shot I did, I ended up placing my camera on a very, very short tripod and placing it on a shelf in my food/wine pantry for the shot. It barely fit..! (You will see it around 8:45 in the video). I totally loved the challenge and sent several possibilities to Eric before the final one. It was such a fun project and hope there is another one soon. (But then, I have to make face masks and re-train a dog before that..! 😳) It was an enjoyable project to do during the isolation period. Stay well, everyone!

>>Whew!
Got the 30-print show up on the wall today with the help of my friend, Shirley Stanfield. She was an absolute Godsend and a great eye and hand to have when I'm up on a ladder!! I couldn't have gotten it hung in 2 hours without her (slightly more as we had to move our cars from the one-hour parking spots, dammit!) I am going back tonight to see if any of the prints have shifted as many were attached to wires suspended from the upper wall they were on. It took me half the wall to figure out that I could attach some tacky-putty to the wall side of the hook to stabilize the hanging mechanism. Anyway, success! Please come by the Rogue Grape for a viewing! I think I'm supposed to be there between 5:00 and 8:00 for an artist reception on February 21st. I'm not sure if I have to actually do anything or just drink wine (probably not), but I will have many of my light painting tools there to demonstrate how I make my images. Hope to see you there! (Maybe I will get a better photo later... Shirley and I were anxious to get out to check our cars for parking tickets!)
"You just sorta/ stomped on my Aorta..."
So, I am getting ready to put up a 28-day show tomorrow morning and I had an epiphany after working many hours to get it organized enough to (hopefully) get it hung within 1 1/2 hours (30 pieces): Why do I do this?
Sometimes it results in sales but most of the time it doesn't. I've had good sales at the gallery where my work is displayed but even those sales have fallen off recently. Is it worth maintaining a business--with all the time involved with that--over creative time? My reaction today was, no, it isn't. But I'm interested in hearing any thoughts. Let me know below...
(BTW, the line is from a song called "You Dun Stomped on my Heart". The tool used was Frank's amazing Double Dragon Flashlight along with blades. )
Now, THIS is light painting! I love everything about it!

I've entered another Light Painting contest and the website is linked below. The contest is to choose the best handmade tool with the results of using it. All of us had to submit two photos, showing the image and the handmade tool used. There are some pretty interesting images and tools!
If you feel like voting for mine ( #1) please feel free to include it with your other two unique choices on your ballad, according to the directions below (no 1,1,1 or only 1 as your choice as they will be disqualified.) Thanks in advance for looking! Have a great holiday!

Light Painting Contest Entries, December 2019 Light Painting Contest Entries, December 2019 December 22, 2019 by Jason D. Page 92 Comments Here are the entries for this months Light Painting Photography contest! The theme of this light painting competition was to create a light painting using some sort of homemade light painting tool. That mean...
Here are a few shots from a few days ago. My friend, Dawn Hensler and I have been doing camera rotation images annually in Ashland Oregon as the windows are great and the downtown is relatively safe for the most part... (every town has their own set of “crazies” though and Ashland is no exception.) Dawn brought along Brad Bailey as backup so we were safe and in great company. We worked late but still only covered about half the territory we had hoped to do. Might have to make a second trip...
I call this one “The New Celtic Knot”. It was created with Patrick Rochon’s new K**a Bold Blades and a bubble tube toy with pipe cleaners inside (thanks Johnny Griffin for that splendid tip!) I played with using a light source on the bubble tube or not. If I did, it would have been with using the Universal connector. Both tools held in one hand. I just love the light play going on!
I can't say enough about Darius Twin and Astro Bandit!! Awesome stop-action, light painting!
Time to start anew... I have tried all of the new Kata Liteblades at least once, so I cleaned all the Sharpie color off them for my next go-round with them. They were all cleaned within 2 minutes with an old Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. (It didn't have any more soap in it.) Probably 15 years from now we will find out about some magic ingredient it has that might not be so great for our health (speculation only), but for now, it cleans blades "slick as a whistle" as my dad used to say. Then again, if Sharpie color is water-based, that is the answer!
I'm posting this so that some of my local friends can see the inventor of my amazing new tools, Patrick Rochon. He is here in Eric Eric Paré studio to show how he uses the blades, and Eric shares his used of them as well. Two of my favorite light painting heros in one place! (And my current favorite cat, Minou.)
The new Kata light-painting Blades Patrick came to my studio the other day and I asked him to explain what these new blades are about, and obviously, we spent a little bit of time in the studi...
Yesterday I hung some of my prints at the Barnstormer's theater in Grants Pass for their run of "Lost Boy", the story of the creation of Peter Pan. I think light painting was the perfect choice for the subject of the play!
Air quality today was 180, which is unhealthy. Why? It is fire season and we have some major fires going in the area. I drove 3 hrs today to the Oregon coast with my dog to exercise her in the ocean and it only got better about 20 miles from there. It was otherwise smoky the whole drive over. That said, here are some shots from a week ago in our local park. It wasn't smoky three days ago as this fire just started. (Just when we thought we'd dodged a bullet this year...) Oh, and if anyone has decided to go to the Nightscaper Conference next May in Kanab, Utah, message me. I've signed up as I want to learn more astrophotography to add to or merge with my light painting. Would be fun to try LP+Astro with friends afterwards!
So many pano shots from my astrophotography workshop with Brad Goldpaint in June... This was a 10-12 shot pano from early in the evening of Mount Shasta, California. (I am still trying to get through all the shots and the videos I have of his.) I may post another version of it down the road apiece taken later in the evening... I need to hone my selection skills in PS before I get to that one!😄These take a long time to get right!
Well, I got to Grants Pass a little to late to actually see the workers apply the artwork to the bus' side but at least I got a good shot without having to chase it around town! I'm on it for the next 6 months... 😍
A nice shot of Mount Shasta in northern California. (Reflection pano with Milky Way coming when I have time to process it!) But we, in Brad Goldpaint's workshop, were lucky to get this awesome sky and "alpenglow" on the mountain while waiting for darkness and the Milky Way to appear. And even better, NO BUGS!
I tried editing a star-trail shot from the Mount Shasta Workshop with Brad Goldpaint earlier this month. I first tried it in Star Stax on the "comet mode" and I wasn't fond of the results. So I did the lengthier comet procedure in Photoshop. The first time, PS crashed, so I had to recover the layers and try again. (Good practice, right?) Then, it went missing in Lightroom until I did a sync of the folder (another few hours missed until I got help from my "Photo Guru", David Vanderlip. Thanks, David!) Finally, I have an image to share. Brad did the light painting on the Middle McCloud Falls and the trees. And, as the camera clicked away, the sky began to lighten with the rising sun. It seems overly bright to me and I probably could have reduced the saturation and/or darkened it, but by the time I finished the 3rd attempted edit on the image, I was exhausted! 😵All images at ISO 6400, f/2.8, 16mm and 25 seconds. Canon 5D3 and Canon 16-35 lens.
I recently had a workshop with Brad Goldpaint in Mount Shasta, California, about an hour and change from where I live in Southern Oregon. Brad won the honor of Astrophotographer of the Year from the UK in November of last year. I decided this year would be my exploration deeper into night photography, so I managed to get a spot in his June workshop, which happened last weekend. I went in with an open mind and came out with a lot of new knowledge which I have just begun to use. This photo was from our first night out. Of course, it is featuring the milky way and our neighboring (dormant) volcano, Mount Shasta. I used two images, one for the foreground and the other for the sky, and layered them in Photoshop. (That is a process almost foreign to me as a light painter, as I do most of my work just in Lightroom.) Exposure for the ground was different than the sky, but let me know if you want any details...
I just heard today that one of my images, Rogue Sunset, was chosen to be featured on the side of a bus in Grants Pass, Oregon from July-December! Woohoo! Now I have some summer bus-stalking to do...
Here are nearly 22 minutes of light-painting inspiration for ya! As much as I love and create light paintings, I feel like a mere babe after watching this. I have so much more to learn...
