Lions Clubs of Maui, Region VI, Zones 1 & 2 have created our Incidence Response Team lead by Past District Governor Joe Pontanilla.

To date, we are working with Maui Optix to provide replacement glasses and possible contacts along with other vendors to replace hearing aids. We also have other optometrists coming in from the other islands to assist with vision screening and replacement glasses/contacts.

We are also working with Red Cross to determine how else our Zone can do to assist our community.

Several members of Lahaina’s Mauna Kahalawai Lions Club have lost everything in the wildfire and we are all working together to help not just the members of our club but others in our community.

Should you need anything specifically that you are not receiving from other organizations, please reach out.

For now, we’re asking our Hawaii Lions membership & community to help support our cause to make a donation. Open your hearts and give as much as you can. All donations are tax deductible. Please make your check out to, mail, and earmark “Maui Disaster Relief”…

Lahaina Wildfire Devastation
How YOU Can Help!

Aloha All…Whenever disaster strikes, the Lions are often among the first to offer relief. The wildfires in Lahaina are so devastating, it’s going to take a lot of resources and financial aid. As the Lions on Maui work together with the county to send food, water, and medical supplies, they’re going to need monetary ability to help them mobilize. Lions Club International will assist with their major disaster funding but with certain restrictions. However with funding from the Hawaii Lions Foundation, our Lions have immediate use and are not as restricted.

We’re asking our Hawaii Lions membership & community to help support our cause to make a donation. Open your hearts and give as much as you can. All donations are tax deductible. Please make your check out to, mail, and earmark “Maui Disaster Relief”…

Come and see Lions Clubs of Maui on Saturday, January 21, at Walmart Kahului.

Bring your used prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and hearing aids for recycling.

Mahalo!

14th Annual “Lions in Sight”
Statewide Eyeglass & Hearing Aid Collection
Saturday January 21, 2023 8am-2pm

As spring cleaning gets under way, the Hawaii Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers & closets for used eyeglasses & hearing aids and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program.

Hawaii Lions collect eyeglasses year-round and, on this day, the Lions members will be out in force receiving your unwanted eyewear at Walmart and other locations throughout the state.

You may also place them in specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes. Visit our website hawaiilions.org for locations prominently displayed on the homepage.

The glasses will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions, Leos and other groups. According to the World Health Organization, the eyesight of approximately one-fourth of the world's population can be improved through the use of a corrective lens.

The glasses will be distributed to those in need within developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. In countries such as Afghanistan, Samoa, and the Philippines, an eye exam can cost as much as one month's wages, and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.

In addition to the eyeglasses, hearing aids will be also collected, cleaned and tested for local distribution.

*** SPECIAL NOTE *** As part of the 14th Annual State-Wide “Lions in Sight” project, January 21, 2023 the Lions stationed at Kahala Mall (between Macy's & Minamoto Kitchoan) from 10:00am - 3:00pm will be offering FREE vision screenings! Hawaii Lions provides this service during the school year; however, not all Hawaii schools participate. This is a great opportunity to get children tested. Must be at least 4 or older (Grades pre-K, K, 1, 3, 5, and 7). A parental permission slip is required to be filled out.

Lions are known for their commitment to being “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade against Darkness,” a challenging statement made by Helen Keller in 1925.

Aloha fellow Lions, Companions in Service (CIS), Leos and guests

I MUA Let us move forward together and celebrate a year of service at the 87th District 50 Hawai’i Lions Convention.

The Convention will be at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu on April 27 through 29, 2023.

Mahalo to the convention planning committee led by Co-Chairs Lion Shasta Yamada (Koko Head Lions Club) and Lion Tad Tsuruma (Pearl City Lions Club). The committee is planning a fun, inspiring, and educational celebration.

We are excited to welcome our Lions International Director (ID) Allen Snider and his Companion in Service Lion Susan. ID Allen is a highly sought-after speaker at District Conventions, so mahalo to ID Bob Lee for making the arrangements.

To keep the cost affordable, the committee has worked hard to secure nearby venues for evening events. To keep transportation costs low, we are planning to have Oahu Lions provide rides for our neighbor island Lions.

We are happy that our Leos will be in attendance to join the fun. New this year, Companions in Service who are not Lions will be able to attend sessions with CIS Joyce Nip.

We invite you to join us for a FUN weekend to meet old acquaintances and make new friends. Learn about Lions. Most of all rekindle your passion and be proud to be a Lion dedicated to the service of others.

Mahalo to Gunars and Maui Ku’ia Chocolate for your support of Lions Cubs of Maui!

Please help Lions Clubs of Maui raise funds to help our community by purchasing Maui Ku'ia Estate Chocolate who are donating a portion of their proceeds back to Lions Clubs of Maui. Here's the link: https://mauichocolate.com/collections/lions-clubs-of-maui-1

A full-time Maui resident and retired biotech entrepreneur, Gunars started a cacao farm to make great chocolate. As the operation grew, he knew he wanted to give back, as philanthropy has been central to his and his wife's life. Plans for the farm, the factory, and the company evolved—the Chocolate Kuleana program was created.

Cheers to dreams with great goals, and cheers to great chocolate, Gunars!
