I am home again! What a week. They treated me very well at Purdue. Dad took my cone collar off for the ride home. That allowed me to get comfortable and sleep most of the ride back. I did ask dad to stop in Rockville so I could water a pole along the road. And once we were home I drank a lot of water then did my business outside, so all my functions are working.
As you might notice in the first photo, my tongue hangs out a little bit, and sometimes I drool a bit (I drooled before the surgery...) but I will adjust to the changes and I am very happy to have that nasty tumor off my jaw.
I'll have to wear the cone at night and anytime dad is not around so I don't paw or scratch at my jaw as it is healing up. I have some stitches that will have to be removed in about 10-12 days. The doctor told dad that they should have lab results back in about 2 weeks, and then we will discuss any further treatment that might be needed.
For now, no hard food and no hard toys, just lots of love and lots of rest. ❀️🐾🐾

I'm heading home!!!

31/05/2024

Morning update. I'm not really hungry yet, partly due to the pain medication they have me on. They said they will start weaning my off those drugs today to try to increase my appetite. I did get up, and go out to do my business so those things are working OK. If all goes well they plan to let me go home on Saturday.
Thanks for your care and compassion. 🐾🐾

Good news. I came through the surgery ok. I'm a little groggy but slowly waking up. Doc says all went well. I'll stay at least one night and be evaluated tomorrow morning.
Thanks for all of your support! 🐾🐾

Well, today I visited the Purdue University Small Animal Hospital Oncology department. They did some tests on me, then did a full body CT scan.
They believe from the biopsies , blood tests and scans that the bone cancer is limited to just the front of my jawbone, it does not appear to have spread yet. My lymph nodes were clear and my scans were clear. We caught it early.
After some discussion dad agreed to a surgical procedure the remove a small piece of my jaw bone and the tumor that re-grew. I may need some chemo and/or radiation after that, but they are optimistic that I'll recover and have a good quality of life once this is done.
Due to a cancelation they had an opening for surgery on Thursday, so I stayed at the hospital to prep overnight. I'll probably stay one or two nights after surgery before I can come home.
Wish me luck! 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Today was a good day. While dad and mom were outside working on their garden, Sadie and I enjoyed the sun, shade and breezes. After dad covered the garden with straw, he made three piles of straw for me and Sadie to play in and nap in. I took advantage of the nice day and slept for almost an hour on my straw bed!
Tomorrow mom, dad and I will travel to Purdue University Small Animal Hospital so they can examine me and see if there is a treatment to slow or stop my osteosarcoma on my jaw. Keep your paws crossed that they find a treatment to help me. 🐾🐾

CANCER: Osteosarcoma.
You may remember two weeks ago I had a tumor removed on my front, bottom gum. The vet called with the lab results this week, osteosarcoma. That is an aggressive bone cancer that can and will spread throughout the body. While they reduced the tumor, it has started growing back and can start to appear in other areas of my body. A chest x-ray shows my lungs and chest are clear right now. The vet has forwarded my x-rays and lab tests to the Purdue University Small Animal Hospital for consultation and treatment options.
2 to 6 months is the estimated time I have without further surgery. But the surgery would be very rough on me as they would have to remove a large section of my lower jawbone. At my age, an extensive surgery like this and bone grafting could cause even more problems. There is chemo and radiation therapy, but we are waiting to hear if that is a good option and what to expect with it.
I am 13 years old and have lived a happy life. I love my family and know even if I lose this battle I will live in their hearts forever. I also know that my dad will stay beside me to the end, no matter what happens. My pain is minimal right now and dad gives me treats with pain medicine every day. I will let him know when the pain is too much to bare.
I love my life, I love my family, and I am happy for every day I have left. ❀️. 🐾🐾

I survived the surgery. They removed most of the tumor and also my front bottom teeth. The tumor had reached the bone and those teeth were loose. I slept for a while then dad came and got me.
The doctor said it went well but I'll be real sore for a few days. I'm taking two kinds of pain pills and some antibiotics. The medicine is making me sleepy again. I'm not very hungry right now so I think I'll just take a nap.
The doctor said the pathology report should be back in a week or so, and maybe I'll have to take some other medicine at that time.
But for now I'm home and doing ok!

Dad noticed a lump on my bottom gum over the weekend. We went to JP Petcare Monday and they referred us to Heritage Animal Hospital North, who we visited this morning. I am scheduled to have the tumor removed Friday morning. Keep me in your thoughts for tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to this, but I trust that my dad will take care of me. ❀️ πŸ• 🐾

Sadie got her stitches removed at the vet's office today. As a reward for being such a good girl she enjoyed a cup of ice cream from Dairy Queen on the ride home.

Sadie, Penny and I sadly share that Sheldon, our tuxedo kitty brother, passed away today. We will miss him greatly. We love you Sheldon, we'll see you at the Rainbow Bridge.

Sadie came out smiling. While it is a big scar, the cyst that they removed was filled with fluid, no tissue which is very good news. So things should heal well and no more treatments will be needed.

Thinking good thoughts for my buddy Sadie. Mom and dad took her to our vet for surgery to remove a mass on her shoulder. Looking forward to her coming home this afternoon lump free.
Good luck little buddy! πŸ’“

Enjoying the fall weather outside, and really having fun with the bale of straw that dad gave us. Sadie and I both like laying in it and rolling around. πŸ•πŸΎπŸΎ

Mom and dad went out for supper and brought us back t-bones. Yum!

Sadie and I took dad for a walk this morning. I was having some stomach issues so dad thought a walk might help. I tagged lots of trees and poles along the way and feel better now that we are back home.
Thanks dad!

Sadie & I took dad for a walk this afternoon to enjoy sunny 70F weather. It was fun and we sniffed a lot of spots along the way. I think we were all worn out by the time we got back home.
