This little peanut is Mabel & she is looking for her forever. She loves to snuggle, purrs like crazy when she’s snuggling, and will let you rub her belly - for such a young kitten, she’s so chill! Not to mention, her fur is soft like velvet AND she’s got mad fly catching skills. She’s the total
package.

M is 14 weeks old, up to date on vaccinations, dewormed, feline leukemia and FIV negative & will be spayed/microchipped prior to adoption. Her adoption fee is $250 + tax. If you have questions about Mabel or would like to fill out an adoption application, send an email to [email protected]

Please be kind to your veterinarian and their staff. Everyone is doing the best they can with circumstances beyond their control. All over the country, vet clinics are booked out for many weeks to months. Some clinics have waitlists of 1,000+ patients needing to be seen. One. Thousand. Not even on the schedule yet. Every day is overbooked, short staffed, everyone is running on fumes and for some reason, the public has become 10x more cruel than ever before.

You might think of them as “your vet” or “the tech” and while that may be true, they are so much more than that. They are PEOPLE. People who have limits to what they can handle, just like you and I. If you think it’s hard to get care for your pet now, just think how hard it will be if these talented, hard working, highly trained, animal loving people reach their limit and leave the field. Or worse, the world. Since well before the pandemic, veterinary medicine has had one of the highest su***de rates of any profession.

Now, more than ever, we need you to be kind. We’re begging you.

Be. Kind.

VETERINARIANS, VETERINARY STAFF AND PET OWNERS....
To everyone in the Vet field: I'm sure you understand the picture below. Veterinarians please hang in there! We are here for you! Vet staff please hang in there! You are not alone!

COVID-19 has affected the veterinary world tremendously. We are unsure if it is due to more people bringing pets into there homes, pets having more access to injury, staff shortage, clinic closures or all of the above... but we are tired!

Pet Owners: Please be patient with us...emergency clinics are at full capacity, small general practice clinics have had to become emergency clinics. We are double booking appointments, skipping our lunch breaks, coming in early, working late, and catching up on weekends. We are doing everything in our power to help you and your pets the best that we can. PLEASE be patient with us. If it is not emergency know that you may have to wait for an answer, a call back or an open appointment time. PLEASE remember that your Vet is a human not a wizard! PLEASE remember the picture below to remind you of just how hard Vets are working to help you!

For the last week, our nights with Tank were stressful. For him, for us, for everyone. This was taken at 4:00am a few days ago, once the tired overcame his discomfort & he finally fell asleep.

We decided to have his rear leg amputated this morning. He has a long recovery ahead, but hopefully nights like these are behind him (well, except the cuddles of course!). He’s staying at the hospital overnight & will come home tomorrow.

His front left leg is still broken & although the bone is healing, there is a lot of scar tissue inhibiting him from fully extending/using it. We will be doing daily physical therapy in hopes that we can make that leg functional again. If we can’t, he will need to learn to walk/live with one front (right) leg and one rear (left) leg.

Here’s the part where we ask for help from you: his surgery & hospitalization is going to cost over $4000. We’re a small organization & this is a huge unexpected expense. We are hoping someone can help us get a cart/wheelchair for Tank to use while he recovers. There are carts that can be purchased & we’ve also seen some made by creative/handy people out there. If you or someone you know can help us with either, we would be forever grateful. We are located in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Tank is a 4 month old American Bulldog from Texas. There, he had been thrown out of a moving car on the freeway and broke two of his legs (front left & back right - this makes the whole situation way more difficult than it already was/is). The fractures were repaired in TX on May 14th.

In the short time we’ve had him, it’s become clear his bones aren’t healing properly. Our hearts are breaking seeing him in pain. They’re also breaking thinking about the decisions needing to be made.

Thing is, Tank is one of those dogs who loves everyone. He’s happy, even when he’s in excruciating pain. He wants to be friends with all the other doggos in the world. When he’s talked to, he wags his tail so hard it sounds like someone is breaking in the house. How though? Seriously, HOW is he so sweet, so happy, despite what humans have done to him?

It’s hard to give up on a puppy like him. He’s gone through hell. He deserves to know what it’s like to be loved. To be safe.

It’s also hard to see him suffer. Impossible, actually. We are prepared to do whatever is needed to help him & to make the pain go away. The hard part is knowing the right way to do that. He’s currently hospitalized & has a surgical consult later today. Will know more then...

Fosters needed in the Twin Cities area

We are in need of a few more foster homes to care for puppies (1-2 at a time) and mama cats with kittens. Send us a message on Facebook or a text to 952-222-8245 if you’re interested 🐾

Our hearts are heavy here in Saint Paul, Minnesota. We don’t have the right words for what has happened, what is happening and and what is yet to come.

What we do have are pictures of puppies & stories of animals saved. We hope by sharing them that they may bring a few moments of light as you scroll through these dark days.

This is Louie. He was found on a 93 degree day in Texas, matted and covered in previously healed acid burns. At first, it’s hard to see the light in this story. But that day, he was rescued & taken in by Hand-Me Down Hounds. His new life began. A life of being loved, fed, cared for, pain free....a second chance, a new beginning.

He will need a foster home in the twin cities area next week. If you are interested in fostering, please send us a Facebook message.

Last June, Dr. Kaitlin had to say goodbye to a foster dog who she loved dearly and had worked tirelessly to save. This pup had been failed by many & was broken in ways no amount of love, education, training, time or management could undo. The outcome was (and still is) heartbreaking & difficult to discuss.

Two days later, she was working at a spay/neuter clinic for Leech Lake Legacy and had gone in search of a quiet place to hide, to cry, for just a minute. In that room, she found a ready-to-pop pregnant mama Lucy, wagging her tail and begging to be pet. She had been surrendered & was in need of a place to go. Her only option at that time was a shelter where the fate of her puppies lives were likely to have ended in euthanasia.

Two days later, at Kaitlin's house, Lucy gave birth to 9 beautiful, smart, outgoing, silly puppies. Her puppies found homes quickly. She, did not. That is, not until last week. After 10 months in rescue, she finally found her forever. We knew she had when we got to the question on the adoption application of where she would sleep. Their answer was so perfect, it was almost as if Lucy had written it herself. "Preferably our bed, but she's welcome to any couch or room in the house."

She's their center of attention, their one and only best girl. She gets to go on daily hikes & runs, adventures to the office with her new dad, and of course, is getting lots of cuddles on their couch & her new bed.

Congratulations mama Lucy, we are so happy for you!

We welcomed three new mamas to the rescue this week ♥️ 🐾 Between all three, they are caring for 7 puppies and 7 kittens.

Happy Mother's Day ladies - the first of many to come living indoors, fed, safe and loved.

Studies have found a few dogs around the office increases productivity. Turns out, having 12 puppies does not. It does, however, make for a pretty cute office once they fall asleep. 😂

We’ve had an overwhelming number (hundreds) of adoption & foster applications/inquiries this week - this is GREAT and the best “problem” we could hope for. We’re a small team of volunteers so please be patient as we work on getting back to everyone. THANK YOU for using these difficult times to come together for animals and for considering adoption!!! ♥️🐾

We are urgently looking for a few fosters. We have dogs being brought up from Texas this week and need to find fosters to care for them. We have a mama dog who recently delivered and her puppies, two puppies that are on their own and also two small breed dogs with heartworm disease. We also have the opportunity to save a mama pitty and her newborn babies if we can find someone to take them in.

Valentine’s Day is coming soon and these two ladies are looking for a loving home. They are the sweetest bonded pair. Hobbies include laying in a curled up ball together in the sun, playing with their crinkle ball toys, getting kisses and showing off their tummies for belly rubs. They are also little purring machines! Siggy 💛 & Zola 💜

Everyone remember the little box puppies? They are all happy, healthy and growing up to be great dogs in their FURever homes. Here’s a little collage of each one. It is so fun to be able to watch them grow and stay in touch with their new families.

Wyatt (now Archie)-light brindle, Beau (now Blu)-black&white, Linda (now Stella)-dark brindle & Toby(now Max)-all black

Several weeks ago we rescued a mama who had just given birth to three little sweeties. She was originally removed from a hoarder home where she was 1 of 80 dogs. This girl has clearly never been able to trust or feel loved by a human. She shook and froze with fear, but adored and protected her little babies. She is slowly warming up as time passes. We can’t change her unfortunate past, but we are determined to ensure that her future is filled with love and happy experiences. She and her little squirts will all be available for adoption very soon! She had two boys and one girl.

Siggy and Zola are two sisters that we’ve taken in. We would love for them to be able to stay together, as they are quite a bonded pair. 😻😻

Update on little Stu 😻😻😻 (kitten found with his deceased hit by car mama covered in her blood)
Since taking him into our rescue- he’s recovered from a broken pelvis/leg, his tail is healing enough to amputate soon, infections have cleared-no longer in handfuls of medications daily, he’s running around and playing on all four legs, his facial wounds are scabbed over. This little survivor has an awesome personality and we are amazed every day at his progress. So resilient from his trauma & yet so darn innocent through it all. I love this little bug. He rubs on all of the clinic house cats (Beyoncé the blind cat is tolerating him), he rolls around playing with his toys and even has sat with patients as they are waking up from surgery. He is looking for a friend ❤️. He climbs up into our laps with his loud purr and wants to be loved.

And just like that, after waiting what felt like forever for his perfect family, the last of the box puppies abandoned in the woods...Beau (now Blu) is home. ❤️

Help us welcome our newest bundle of joy - Mama Roxy & her three perfect babes.

Roxy came from a home in Texas where she had been living with more than 80 other dogs. Not surprisingly, she was super duper pregnant when she was rescued. When the shelter found out how far along she was, they contacted us for help. The only alternative available without rescue was to spay/abort her puppies.

We are so grateful to shelters willing to reach out for help in these situations - rather than keeping these harsh realities a "secret". Every community/shelter/rescue has limits - that's okay. That's reality. That's also why working together is the future of animal welfare. Together, we won't need to euthanize puppies on the day they are due to be born. Together, we can (and will) do so. much. more.

Roxy is understandably very shy but day by day, we've seen hints of her personality shining through. The sweet, gentle, caring personality of a pup who doesn't need to be scared anymore, or ever again. We got you, girl. Now, let's raise some puppies together. ❤️
