Fear and Surrender 23/04/2016

Excellent article... and so lovely to see the Vietnamese culture respect the newborn period by mother and baby not leaving their home.

Fear and Surrender Many cultures consider the first 40 days after birth a distinct time in a woman’s life. Referred to as “la cuarentena” in many Latino cultures, and the “lying-in” period during America’s past, mothers and babies are kept together and cared for in isolation, with others doing their household chores…

Evidence for the Saline Lock during Labor - Evidence Based Birth - 08/04/2016

A saline lock (“hep-lock”) is an intravenous (IV) threaded into a peripheral vein, flushed with saline, and then capped off for later use. This way you are not hooked up to an IV pole, but have easy access in case you need something injected later.. An IV or saline lock is standard in Vietnamese labour rooms but is it necessary?

"There is little-to-no evidence for the use of a saline lock during an un-medicated labor. However, there are risks and benefits to having the saline lock. The ultimate decision for whether or not to have a saline lock should come from you. If you want one and feel safer or more comfortable by having a saline lock just in case it is needed for medications or IV fluids, then that is your right to make that choice. If you have reviewed the risks and benefits and feel that you do not want a saline lock, then that is your right to make that choice."

Evidence for the Saline Lock during Labor - Evidence Based Birth - What is the evidence for using a saline lock during labor? Do you need a saline lock or hep lock to give birth?
