Are you experiencing shoulder pain or tightness?? Do you have issues lifting your arm up or out to the side?

Did you know the shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the human body. It’s made up of three different joints and if one of these is not functioning properly, then all three are affected.

Our bodies long for symmetry and when muscles are not working properly, then compensation patterns begin to evolve. Long term compensation leads to tightness, range of motion loss, pain, and joint dysfunction.

Are you ready to treat the root cause of your shoulder pain? If so, contact me today.

Do you have proper tongue positioning??

Did you know that the position of your tongue can effect not only how you breath, but the placement of your jaw and neck, it can influence your sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system, muscle tightness of the face, and fascia tightness throughout the body.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms and would like to resolve them, I’d love to teach you how to address the root cause, aka the tongue.

💥Enhancing Rehabilitation Outcomes with MAT

As a dedicated rehabilitation specialist, my primary focus is to help individuals recover from injuries, regain optimal function, and improve their overall quality of life. To enhance the effectiveness of the rehabilitation programs, it's crucial to explore innovative techniques that address the specific challenges faced by you, as a patient. Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) offers a scientifically grounded approach that can significantly contribute to the success of rehabilitation efforts.

💥Targeted Muscle Activation for Rehabilitation:

Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) focuses on identifying and addressing muscle imbalances, weaknesses, and compensation patterns that often arise during the rehabilitation process. By precisely assessing and activating specific muscles, MAT helps improve neuromuscular efficiency, functional movement, and overall strength, enhancing rehabilitation outcomes.

💥Post-Orthopedic Surgery Recovery:

Orthopedic surgeries such as ACL reconstruction or joint replacements often result in muscle imbalances, weakness, and altered movement patterns. These factors can hinder the recovery process and delay patients' return to optimal function. By incorporating MAT into their rehabilitation program, you can identify and activate specific muscles that may have become inhibited or weakened. Through targeted MAT interventions, such as isometric contractions, corrective exercises, and proprioceptive training, you can reestablish optimal muscle function and improve overall joint stability and range of motion. This approach accelerates the rehabilitation process, allowing patients to regain strength, mobility, and function more efficiently.

Imagine a patient recovering from ACL reconstruction surgery. They may experience muscle atrophy and weakness in the quadriceps muscles. By implementing MAT protocols, you can specifically activate and strengthen the quadriceps, restoring muscle function and improving overall knee stability. This targeted approach enhances the rehabilitation process, allowing the patient to regain strength and range of motion in the affected knee and facilitating a successful return to their daily activities or sports.

💥If you or someone you know is in rehab and/or recovering from a surgery, I’d love to speak to you about how MAT can help in the recovery process.

Just finished up another in depth MAT course focusing on Foot Function.

Did you know that your foot is made up of 26 bones and 55 articulations, that can affect every motion in your body?

Your foot strikes the ground numerous times throughout the day. If those tiny articulations are not functioning properly, it can lead to issues up the chain, i.e. the ankle, knee, hip, back, shoulder, or neck.

Are you, or someone you know, experiencing foot pain, ankle pain, knee pain, hip pain, or spinal pain?? If so, MAT would be a great technique to address the muscular imbalances causing these issues.

💥The first stage of muscle dysfunction is tightness🦵🏼💪🏼🦶🏼✋🏼

💥 The second stage of muscle dysfunction is pain😢

Pain is an indicator that something is wrong. Your body tightens up to protect itself—like when you’re walking across ice—if this tightness is not addressed, it leads to pain.

If you or someone you know have been experiencing nagging tightness or unaddressed pain, I would love to speak to you about how you’d benefit from Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT).

Having tightness or a nagging pain in your neck??

Looking at your computer💻 or phone📱too long can cause these symptoms.

Stretching may not necessarily help with these symptoms. The tightness is caused by lengthening of the muscles in the back of the neck and shortening of the muscles in the front of the neck creating an imbalance and eventually tightness/pain.

If you’re looking to live without these symptoms, I can help using the MAT method. Contact me today for your initial assessment.

Overuse and Disuse Can Lead to Excess Inflammation- Greg Roskopf

Overuse and disuse are the two main factors that can lead to inflammatory issues relating to muscle dysfunction.

When you overuse muscles, we consider that a form of overtraining and overtraining puts the body in a catabolic state where the body is unable to heal.

Disuse, by definition, is basically that if you don't use it, you lose it. When people quit exercising and relatively quit using their muscles, muscles get progressively weaker. The ability to tolerate forces becomes less and less. Therefore, when someone is inactive, their muscles will progressively weaken to the point that it will take very little force to exceed tolerance levels.

In either of these situations, when the force tolerance levels are exceeded, all of the negative issues relating to inflammation explained above will occur.

Therefore, in our eyes as MAT Practitioners, overtraining is all relative. It is basically a sign of unresolved inflammation. If someone's force tolerance levels are very low, it will take very little physical stress to exceed their current tolerance levels. Even everyday activity could be too much stress for the body to handle and this could put that person in a relatively "over-trained state".

In inflammatory diseases such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, the tolerance levels of clients living with these diseases are so low that everyday activity can keep them in an over-trained state. If you look at the symptoms relating to either of these diagnoses, they are very similar to the symptoms that come with known definitions of overtraining.

We should note that these people never respond well to exercise as their body is already in a state of being over-stressed.

When it comes to exercise regimens for people like this, they should basically go backward before they go forward – i.e. in order to get people out of a chronic pain state, you would need to improve the tolerance levels of their muscles first. One way to help improve their individual system is to take forces away from their routine in order to put their body in a position where it can recover and heal. The other is to improve their muscle function by utilizing MAT in order to prepare their body to take on and tolerate the forces that they are challenged with daily.

Are you ready to prepare your body to take on your daily routine?? If so, contact me at 937-604-8712.

How can MAT help to increase range of motion??

Have you ever walked on ice 🧊and felt your body immediately tense up🥶? This is an innate response to protect you and try to prevent you from slipping and falling. Just like when you’re on ice, your body can sense instability from weaknesses in the muscular system🦵🏼.The brain 🧠 then tells other muscles to tighten and limit motion in an effort to protect you💪🏼.By addressing these muscle weaknesses and the resulting muscular imbalances, MAT can reduce the body’s response of tightening and becoming restrictive/tense.

Essentially MAT is melting the ice 🧊 for you to move more freely. Many health and wellness professionals focus primarily on improving the range of motion of a client, whereas MAT is uniquely different in that it focuses on the muscle weaknesses. When weak muscles are activated properly this can then result not only increased strength 🏋🏼‍♀️but also in an increased range of motion for the client.

18/04/2022

One question I often get is…

What is the difference between MAT and Physical Therapy???

Both are used as tools to heal the body, but

•MAT examines the ENTIRE body to solve an issue or increase performance, whereas Physical Therapy is very focused on just the painful area.

•MAT has the potential to remove muscle inhibition causing a relief in pain and sustainable outcome, whereas Physical Therapy will treat only the painful area and not the root cause of it.

•MAT addresses the root cause of the issue that is creating the pain, whereas Physical Therapy lacks the ability to address the cause of the pain which may lead to the issue coming back over and over again.

Most individuals I see have tried multiple modalities and still do not have any relief. Why not try MAT first and address the underlying issue/issues so you can get back to a healthy functional lifestyle🏋🏼‍♀️🧘🏽‍♀️🏄🏼‍♀️🏊🏼‍♀️⛳️🏸🚴🏼‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️

21/03/2022

What make Muscle Activation Techniques unique?

MAT does not force change on the body but instead works with it to make improvements, causing changes in motion via improvements in muscle contraction. An MAT specialist listens to your body’s responses and changes their treatment decisions based on these responses. Each client is treated as an individual with their own muscular weaknesses and compensation patterns. Therefore, no treatment session is ever the same.

MAT does not diagnose or treat pathology, but works to improve a muscle’s contractile capabilities and the resulting range of motion and strength of that muscle/limb. By improving these aspects, a person will see an increased ability for exercise and physical performance.

MAT differentiates itself from other techniques because it never attempts to directly lengthen or change the muscle by stretching, heating, kneading, or foam rolling. MAT is not trying to “relax” muscle, but instead tries to “activate” the muscle, so that your body is better prepared to handle the forces that come from exercise and every day movements.

Message me to schedule an evaluation to get you moving better🦵🏼🦶🏼💪🏼✋🏼🏋🏼‍♀️⛹🏼‍♀️🏌🏽🏄🏼‍♀️🏊🏼‍♀️🚵🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♀️

What about strength training, stretching, or even yoga🤷🏽‍♀️

Can’t these correct weakened muscles??

The answer is – maybe. If you have muscles that have been weakened due to prolonged stress or sudden trauma, then moving them into a position of vulnerability (contraction) may result in other muscles taking over or compensating. This leads to the weak muscles staying weak and the strong muscles getting stronger. This can lead to joint deterioration and chronic problems like tendonitis and arthritis due to imbalanced forces acting on the joint. The best course of action is to properly assess which specific motions are limited and which muscles are weakened and then to take a course of action to improve your muscle function.

MAT can tell you which muscles are weak, and then give you the tools to improve these weaknesses, so that you can get back to participating in the sports/activities that you enjoy from a position of strength.

22/01/2022

According to a national survey, in 2014, 8.6 million people reported injuries related to sports or recreational activities😱

Maybe as you’re reading this you’re fighting some nagging pain. 🦵🏼🦶🏼💪🏼✋🏼Or maybe you’re ignoring warning signs of a recurring injury.

If that’s you, it may be time to incorporate a little MAT into your life.

MAT, or Muscle Activation Technique, doesn’t just put a band-aid over your ailments. It hones in on weakness, from your head to your toes, or whatever muscles need the most work.

Winning ways to Well-being…

13/09/2021

The big question is…

What is Exercise and what should it be🤔

I’ve been in the health and wellness industry for over 15 years and there are many views on this question. As for myself, my answer has changed over the years with education and training. My previous education and training are based upon science and the concept of bigger, faster, and stronger. After being introduced to Muscle Activation Techniques, Greg Roskopf, and it’s community of practitioners, my view on this question has changed. I have been enlightened on how exercise should be building my body up and not breaking it down. I should be stimulating my body to function better, instead of pushing it to the max when it can’t withstand that max. My focus should be on rebuilding the health and function of my body by looking at what is changing internally and how the body works as an integrated system.

This is definitely not what the mainstream fitness industry is focusing on, which is leaving many of us in chronic joint pain and muscle tightness. If you would like to learn more information on this topic, please don’t hesitate to message me!

The Body's Ability to Tolerate Forces…

A Great Message From Greg Roskopf:

“Inflammation is the key component behind muscle weakness, and it is all due to the inability for muscles to tolerate the forces that have been placed on them. When muscles lose the ability to tolerate forces, they lose the ability to contract efficiently. When they lose the ability to contract efficiently, they lose the ability to shorten effectively. When a muscle can no longer shorten effectively, then the opposite muscles will not lengthen effectively — therefore, the opposite/antagonist muscles show up as being tight.

The opposite muscles have increased stretched reflex activity (muscle spindle), with reduced stretch reflex activity on the shortening side. With this decreased spindle activity on the shortening side, the muscles' ability to tolerate forces also decreases. Overall strength/force output decreases in the inhibited muscle.

In this situation, where muscles lose the ability to contract efficiently, it takes less physical stress to create a pain response. There is an inverse relationship between mechanoreception (spindle activity) and nociception (pain). When the sensitivity of the muscle spindle decreases, the sensitivity of the pain receptors increases.

When inflammation negatively affects muscle function, the associated muscle weaknesses are like having loose battery cables. The communication between the nervous system and the muscular system decreases. The brain and nervous system can’t get proper input to the muscles, therefore these muscles cannot fire on demand (a timing issue). When the muscles lose the ability to contract efficiently, they can’t do their job to stabilize joints and protect the body from injury.”

Remember to take care of yourself and get your muscular system tuned up. Do yourself a favor and get an MAT session on your calendar!

Well MAT is here to help!!

How is Muscle Activation Techniques® different than everything else?

💥MAT recognizes that the physical stresses of everyday life and activities can take their toll on the body. As life breaks us down, from a neuromuscular standpoint, someone has to be there to put us back together.

Why is MAT unique?

💥MAT differentiates itself from other techniques because it never attempts to directly lengthen or change the muscle by stretching, heating, kneading, or foam rolling. MAT is not trying to “relax” muscle, but instead tries to “activate” the muscle, so that your body is better prepared to handle the forces that come from exercise and every day movements.
