Oh Mama, my heart is broken. What I wouldn’t give to hug you one more time. To tell you I love you. Selfishly, I want you here. For you? I’m relieved you are no longer in pain, that peace has found you.

I am struggling with the words to adequately express just how much of an impact you have had on me and those around you.

Racing, rucking, crawling through the mud, dancing at shows, drinks, singalongs, heart to hearts, crazy adventures, shenanigans, and so much more.

Your tenacity and perseverance, your “the glass isn’t just half full but refillable” attitude, your capacity to love, “your take no sh*t” attitude.

Dee, the best way I know to honor you and carry on your memory is to live! To dance like no one is watching, to laugh fully and from the belly, to love with my whole heart and soul, to go after what I want with courage and to fight for it with every bit of my being.

Every time I raise a shot of Jamo or a glass of Guinness, it will be in your honor.

I had a coaching call yesterday that had some rather profound realizations: "I hold myself to a higher standard than anyone else, I give myself less grace than I give anyone else, as confident and unapologetic as I am, I still find outside voices creeping in to tell me I am too much, too loud, too bossy." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You see, we were talking all about imposter syndrome and how not only to combat it but to recognize it when it starts happening. That imposter syndrome is something we all deal with, even those with a lot of self-esteem and self-confidence. That self-care, self-love, and self-acceptance are all a part of recognizing imposter syndrome and knocking it aside to keep going.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This led to some really profound takeaways: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"I can either lower my own standards to the same level I hold others to or I can raise the standards of everyone around me"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"I can either raise the amount of grace I give myself to that of what I give others or I can start giving others less grace" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
and the biggie? The one that really had me taking a deep breath?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"I am worth giving myself more grace, lowering my standards (to a more realistic level and keep me from burnout and the deterioration of my mental health), and that I am confident and capable."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To clarify, I wasn't the coach. I was being coached. I was sitting in a space free of judgement, where I had the room to be curious with myself, a coach to ask the questions to get me to look at it from different perspectives. She was actively listening, holding space, stopping her own thoughts to allow me to continue processing mine. That is the power of coaching. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I talk a lot about self-care and what that looks like to me. I'm currently digging back in as I allowed myself to get overwhelmed with all the wedding planning and the wedding itself. Mind you, I made the choice willingly, knowing it was for a very temporary timeframe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It started last night with getting to bed earlier than I have been, getting up a little earlier this morning, getting to the gym, writing down my gratitude, and rehydrating my body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While I don't tackle all 6 of these things every single day, I strive to tackle at least 4 of them, at least 5 days a week. I'm only human and can't live in a world of perfection, especially with my all-or-nothing attitude. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This time last year I was somewhere in the northern half of Vermont on the Long Trail. For years, I had said "someday" to hiking the LT. The thing about "someday" is it rarely turns into "today" without having a deadline, a plan.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Somewhere in 2015 [that is the best I can do at narrowing it down, although maybe it was 2016?] I gave in and changed from "someday" to "in the next 5 years." I started collecting the gear I needed for thru-hiking as opposed to just the occasional overnight, I researched NOBO vs SOBO [and settled on SOBO, although we ended up going NOBO], and upon meeting Matt [trail name Posi], settled on a start date of September 4, 2020.

I’m sturdy AF. Not just physically. Mentally and emotionally.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It took time and work to get to this point and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t still have work to do. But that’s okay! I won’t blow over if a strong gust of wind comes my way. I won’t give up when people doubt me or criticize me. I’m sturdy AF.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When things aren't feeling all sunshine and roses, it is hard to remember that without those cloudy days, we wouldn't have sunsets. Also? Clouds bring rain, rain brings life to the gardens and forests, the gardens and forests give us food and oxygen, which gives us life! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There is beauty even on cloudy days! This view is spectacular when the sky is blue but the greens pop in a more vibrant way against the dark sky. It certainly helps that the sun was shining from the other side but we can't see the sun.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What I am trying, not so eloquently, to say, is that there is beauty everywhere we look and that sometimes it is enhanced by the things we don't actually see. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Self-care is something that comes in many different forms. Sometimes it looks like sitting in a hammock, waiting for the rain to come. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I know I talk a lot about getting sleep, sunshine, movement, gratitude, and hydration as the cornerstones of my self-care and they are really important in the day to day of staying healthy, mentally, physically, and emotionally, but they aren’t the only things that make up my self-care. Sitting in a hammock, waiting for the rain to come; curling up to read a book; knitting or crocheting a new pattern; finding a new recipe I’m excited to try; catching up with friends over a drink; watching the sunset; all of these are things go that seem like every day life that are part of my self-care.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
