Soddy Daisy High Family,

Welcome to the first full week of school! We loved having students back in the building last week and are looking forward to a wonderful school year. This communication will come out weekly and further communication will be sent on an as needed basis. We feel it is important to have you as part of our school family and want you to be in the information loop as much as possible. Our weekly parent message will contain shout outs, important information for the week/upcoming events, and the week’s calendar of events. We ask that you take a few minutes each week to read our message and talk with your student to ensure they are fully engaged in school. We are so grateful for your partnership in making our school a great place to be.

KUDOS for the week:

HUGE shout out to our partners who worked to bring our staff breakfast and treats during staff professional development days: Stuart Heights Baptist (Pastor Patrick and Jennifer Williams), James Berry, Dirty Dough, Lindsey Coleman, Jennifer Tindall and their crew including students, Soddy-Daisy Walmart, Soddy-Daisy Food City and our own wonderful Student Council CORE led by Mr. Sneed. We are so appreciative of our community partners, parents, and students who love on us and energize us to do the important work with kids. We couldn’t do it without your support!
KUDOS to our own SDHS faculty and staff for the amazing work they completed in last week’s in-service. We worked hard to calibrate our practices, establish a new plan for safety, and set strong goals for this school year. Our faculty and staff are top notch, and we are working hard to have our best year yet!
Information and Items of Importance for this Week:

Reminder concerning schedule changes: we engaged in a very thorough process last spring with several parent communications, student meetings, parent meetings, as well as zoom Q and A opportunities for students and parents to understand and complete the course request process. Documents, both electronic and paper, were provided to guide the request process. We then took those to build a very tight master schedule. Additionally, we have had over 60 new to SDHS students come to enroll this first week and they must be placed in classes. To keep things balanced as much as possible we are simply not able to make schedule changes unless there is a real problem with a student schedule (ex. missing class, pathway is incorrect). We appreciate your understanding as we work to have our schedule as tight and efficient as possible.
We are now into our first full week of the school year. Most weeks of the school year, we will run an altered schedule to include an Advisory Period. This time will allow students to participate in a wide variety of activities such as goal setting, mentor time, school-wide meetings, pep rallies, school climate events, meetings with teachers, study hall, school celebration activities. This time will enable us to host many activities without interference to the regular classroom time. Our goal is to allow students time to engage in fun activities and/or important activities to enhance the school year while continuing to maintain our strong emphasis on excellence in academics.
Students and staff enjoyed a wonderful second day of school as they participated in our annual Second Day, Trojan Way. The students made their way through the carousel event where they participated in Club Rush 24-25, school spirit building activities and learned about new initiatives as well as expectations for excellence in academics and operations. They especially enjoyed the sweet treat at the end. This event has been a huge success for the last two years and it’s a great way to kick off the school year.
Student Parking this school year will again be 1st come 1st serve and students will not have assigned parking spots. Due to the new safety and building protocols that will be in place, ALL students will park in Lot D. This includes student organizations that we have made exceptions for in the past. The lone exception being students with any type of physical disability, and they should communicate with Coach Hensley on where they will park. In the result that Lot D becomes full we will assign students to other parking lots under the same 1st come 1st serve basis. Students are not to number, decorate, paint, etc. any parking spot on campus. Parking spots are $25 and can only be purchased through the Givebacks website. The QR code is available on our website and social media platforms and are spots available for purchase effective immediately. The driver information form will also be available on the website, social media platforms, and in the main office. In years past, we have used Google classroom to upload driver information. We will not be using that this year but instead turning in a physical information form when students arrive to pick up their tag. The tag must be paid in full and information sheet completed prior to receiving the parking tag. Parking tags will be distributed beginning 9/12 at lunch. Students should drive and park in Lot D until then. ALL drivers must have parking tag information turned in and tag picked up by Friday 9/16 to avoid disciplinary action.
Seniors - Have you scheduled your SENIOR CLASS PORTRAIT session? If you haven't already made your appointment for your Senior Portraits, please go to https://book.appointment-plus.com/d7cdsjlc #/ Make your appointment ASAP....the deadline is early October. These are the only pictures that we can use in the yearbook for senior portraits.
Seniors: Road to UTC field trip is 8/19! FREE!!! Pick up a permission form on Canvas or in the College/Career office (yellow paper).
Monday (8/12) is the first official day of our after-school program, SDHS Atlas! Students can continue to register at any time, as it is open enrollment. Registration forms can be found in the media center, front office, guidance suite, and room 220. Completed forms can be returned to Ms. Durham, Mr. Sneed, or any of the guidance counselors! As mentioned at orientation, contact information for Ms. Durham has been included as well as the Atlas schedule (see attached flyer). Please contact her with any questions, and we are looking forward to a great year!
Save the date for Tuesday, August 27th, Open House including events for Senior Survival Night, Junior Jumpstart, and Sophomore Startup (the Freshmen event was Orientation Night). Classrooms will be open for students and parents to visit, and teachers will be on site to connect with families.

06/08/2024

Good Morning Soddy-Daisy High Family. We are excited to welcome everyone back to school tomorrow. Here are a few final items you will need to know for the first day of school.

School arrival time is 6:45am-7:05am. The tardy bell for first period will ring at 7:15am. We will have staff throughout the building to help students find their classes.
Schedules will be open for viewing this afternoon at 4:00pm. Counselors are making some final changes and balancing to schedules, and they will not be ready for viewing until then. We will have hard copies of all student schedules in the Old Gym tomorrow morning for any students who would like to pick them up. There has been some concern for why schedules have not been open before now. We are following the same practice we do every single year with regards to final changes in scheduling to get as close to optimal as we can for the master grid. We always wait until the day before school begins to unlock PowerSchool and open schedules for viewing. This was mentioned last spring in all student meetings and parent communications during the course request process.
The district IT office did a reset of all student passwords this summer due to security issues. Students will receive their new password to their student email account tomorrow morning during first period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The district office wants to ensure that all student accounts are safe and in optimal operating condition for this school year. We encourage our students, moving forward, not to share their account address and password. This will keep their information safe.
Please note the following information for arrival and dismissal processes for this school year (map enclosed below):

Arrival and Dismissal Traffic Patterns:
Arrival in the morning: Parents will drop off all students on the football field side of the school. If your student exits your car on the lower side of the horseshoe, you may drive around the back side of the school and exit campus on Hyatt Road. If your student exits your car on the upper side of the horseshoe, you may return to the three-way stop and exit left via the main hill onto Sequoyah Road. All student drivers will park in Lot D only and buses will drop off in the bus loading zone on the new gym side of the school.

Departure in the afternoon: Upon arrival parents will enter parking Lot A (parallel to the football field) and start lining up single file in the right lane at the bottom of the horseshoe. Once the line is back to lot A, cars will start lining up in the 6 marked lanes. Lane 1 will start on the far left of the parking lot (this is opposite of years past where Lane 1 was always on the far right). Once a lane is full, cars should move to the next available lane and start lining up. This should allow a smooth transition upon dismissal and hopefully limit traffic congestion at the top of the hill. Parents, please follow proper protocol and do not use the 3 way stop to enter the traffic line unless it is after 2:40 p.m. A staff member and/or staff representative will be on hand to dismiss each lane to circle around the horseshoe and pick up your student. After a student has been picked up, parents will be directed back to the 3-Way stop where you may exit left (Sequoyah Rd.) or right (Hyatt Rd.) to leave campus.

Student drivers will leave campus at either exit points of Lot D and may exit right (Hyatt Rd.) or left (Sequoyah Rd.). Buses will pick up all students in the bus loading zone on the new gym side of the school each afternoon.
