National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day is August 22nd. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) created this day to remind cat owners to schedule an annual appointment for their cat's health.
While pet owners don't have to take their cats to the vet on this day, it's a reminder that cats can develop common illnesses that might go unnoticed for a while. For example, cats can get feline leukemia virus, a serious disease that can be spread by stray cats. Cats can also get other illnesses such as ringworm, a fungal infection that can be passed from cat to human.
We'd love to see pictures of your cat at the vet clinic. If you have some, please share them on our page. If you don't have any, take some the next time you take your cat to the vet. If you don't have a cat, or if you don't have a vet, we'd love to see pictures of your dog or any other pet you may have. We are always happy to see pictures of happy and healthy pets!
Happy Wednesday! It's almost the weekend, and you know what that means. It's time to start thinking about what you are going to do with your pets. Do you have any fun activities planned? If so, let us know what you are doing. We would love to hear about it.
Today is National Black Cat Appreciation Day! This day was created to celebrate our black cats, dispel the myths and superstitions surrounding them, and encourage people to adopt black cats from shelters. We would love to see your beautiful (handsome) black kitties! Show us your black cat love!🐈⬛❤️

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month! Take our Itch Quiz to identify potential signs of allergic itch in your dog. https://ow.ly/zk5R50SmuFA
🔎 Check the Chip Day is here! 🔎
As veterinary professionals, you know that microchips can significantly increase the chances of being reunited with a lost pet. But a microchip is only effective if the registration info is UTD!
Help us recognize by making sure to remind your clients to update their microchip information, or taking a little bit of extra time to educate on the importance of microchipping. 🐶🐱
Our microchip lookup tool can assist in finding registration companies: https://hubs.li/Q02Lq6pB0

Today is National Lazy Day and Spoil Your Dog Day! If you plan on being lazy today, you are not alone! And don't forget to spoil your dog today, it's Spoil Your Dog Day! So go ahead and take a nap, watch a movie, or curl up with a good book. And don't forget to give your dog a special treat or two!
Happy Friday! Most of us have the usual pets, such as cats and dogs. However, there are many other pets that people keep. We would love to see pictures of your exotic pets, such as snakes, lizards, or even larger animals. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of having an exotic pet?
August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Immunizations are an essential part of keeping your pets healthy. They prevent illnesses that can be serious and even fatal. They also prevent disease transmission between wildlife, pets, and people, and are required by local ordinances. Vaccinations are the best way to protect your pets. Have your veterinarian see your pets yearly to ensure that they are up to date on their vaccinations.
Happy birthday to all shelter dogs today! Today is a special day to celebrate shelter dogs whose actual date of birth is unknown. Let's celebrate by adopting a shelter dog, donating to an animal shelter, or volunteering your time at an animal shelter. If you are unable to adopt or volunteer, you can still help by donating to an animal shelter. Every little bit helps.
Today is National Mutt Day! Join us in celebrating mixed-breed dogs and raising awareness that there are many "mutts" in need of fur-ever homes in shelters all over. Of all the different kinds of breeds in shelters, a staggering 80% of them are mixed-breed. Why the high percentage? There are many reasons, but one of the most important is that mixed-breed dogs are often seen as less desirable than purebred dogs. This is a shame because mixed-breed dogs are often healthier and have fewer genetic problems than purebred dogs. They are also just as loving and loyal as any other dog. So, if you are looking for a new furry friend, please consider adopting a mixed-breed dog from a shelter. You won't be sorry!
Today is International Friendship Day! They say that the dog is a man's best friend. Show us your furry friends! Share a picture of your best friend and tell us what makes them special.

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month! Here are some tips to help keep your best friend safe and returned home safely:
1. Microchip your dog.
2. Make sure your dog has a collar that fits properly and has ID tags.
3. Make sure your yard is securely fenced.
4. Make sure your pet is spayed or neutered.
5. If your pet rides in the car, make sure they are secured, especially when opening doors.
If your dog is not microchipped, now is the time to do it! The procedure is quick and can be done during an office visit. Call one of our three locations to schedule an appointment.

Our History:
Peoria Area Veterinary Group of Chillicothe was established in May of 1999 by John W. Calhoun, DVM. It was originally located at 320 West Cedar Street in Chillicothe, Illinois. After three years of operation, the staff at Peoria Area Veterinary Group of Chillicothe found that they had outgrown the 700 square-foot clinic and decided it was time to build a larger facility. Peoria Area Veterinary Group of Dunlap at 1310 West Truitt Avenue opened its doors in October of 2002.
Then in September of 2006, Dr. John took ownership of Peoria Area Veterinary Group of Dunlap, located at 4620 W. Cedar Hills Drive in Dunlap, Illinois. This clinic was originally owned and operated by Richard Calhoun DVM, Jim Withers DVM, and Marvin Mitchell DVM.
