Located on the 400 block of Gay Street, this iconic building was the site of numerous "sit-ins" during the Civil Rights Movement, where Knoxville College students and others protested segregation and fought for their rights. Today, the Kress Building stands as a reminder of the resilience and determination of those who stood up for what they believed in. Take a moment to learn more about this important piece of Knoxville history and the impact it had on our community.

We have a cool piece of history to share with you today!

Noah W. Smith started Gleaner Printing Company in 1902 and operated it out of his home on Vine Avenue. He owned this innovative black-owned business for 50 years, serving Knoxville and the surrounding area.

We love hearing about businesses like this, that helped shape our city's history. It's so important to remember those who came before us so we can carry the legacy forward!

The oldest Black church in Knoxville, Tennessee, is named after a former slave who became a religious pioneer and a political genius in the South. Andrew Jackson Warner's name was so well known that he was urged to run for a U.S Congressional seat and run for Governor in the state of Alabama. The church still exists today as Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church.

The United Way of Greater Knoxville is about to wrap up the latest round of funding through the Community Healing Fund for Black-led small to medium size organizations (defined as annual expenses under $1,000,000)!

The committee has created a grant process that will provide funds to Black-led small to medium size organizations who are rooted in community and willing to work together to create a shared aspiration for the community.

This shared vision will directly influence the future priorities of the Community Healing Fund and the grant process itself. Our hope is to create a more equitable and supportive grant process built directly on the needs of the nonprofits and the community they serve.
