Nice to get some love from NPR for my Resonant Sculpture Project in this beautiful remembrance of the great Richard Serra... Thankfully, his work will live on for years and years....

RIP Richard Serra-- I will be forever grateful to have met you, to have been inspired by you, and to have had so many opportunities to collaborate with your work in my Resonant Sculpture Project over the years. Every performance with your work was a revelation, leaving me and the audience awe-struck, and transformed. You were the Picasso of your time, creating a global legacy that will touch millions and last forever. A rare and sublime human being who was consistently curious, adventurous, and daring, continuing to develop and evolve till the very end. The ideas were bright and brilliant and the work was the thing.

Well, that was a pretty damn good time at Lincoln Center last Saturday night!! The debut of my group, ASTRO vs. RIVERS ON MARS, was a blast to be part of, and inspired some serious love from fans, old and new alike... Big thanks to my talented crew -- Ava Mendoza, Alexis J. Marcelo, Chris Eddleton, and Shanir Blumenkranz -- and to the extended Burnt Sugar family, especially Jared Michael Nickerson, who not only arranged two nights of killer music, but played his friggin' ass off between sets, keeping the vibe alive...

Looking forward to playing a very rare SOLO CONCERT at 440 Gallery in Park Slope this coming Sunday afternoon 4:30pm… Bundle up, grab a loved one, and come on out for some inspired and intimate musical improvisations!!

January is looking pretty good so far... starting with this Quartet show at Winter Jazz Festival this Sunday evening @ 11pm, when I will be joined by my wonderful bandmates: Anders Nilsson, Eric Revis, Chad Edward Taylor. It's going to be a great night all around, with one of my favorite bands, Tarbaby (w/ Nasheet Waits, E Sebastian Revis, and Orrin Evans) playing the 10pm set as well.

Two years ago today I lost a great friend... and we all lost a cultural icon... a brilliant and loving spirit. RIP the late great Greg Tate. Not a day goes by....

Parallel to my composing, band-leading, and sideman work, I have been pursuing a challenging solo project for a number of years. It is called The Resonant Sculpture Project and consists of a series of improvised solo interactions with the monumental works of iconic sculptor Richard Serra. This project has been a labor of love, but one that has been revelatory to me as an artist. It started as a seemingly simple musical encounter between myself and these vibrant works, but it has gradually grown in terms of both scope and transformative power. At once confounding and rewarding, the Resonant Sculpture Project has now been presented several times at Gagosian Gallery in New York, Paris, and London, the Princeton Art Gallery, and now, something I am very excited about --- an upcoming weekend of RSP performances at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao on May 5th and 6th in Spain.

Folks, you probably know already that Greg Tate was a force of nature, and his band Burnt Sugar was his musical Frankenstein, a monstrous creation with a mind of it's own, even under the conduction of his magical wand. We performed all over the world, in Sardinia, Lincoln Center, Paris, Detroit, L.A.... in some beautiful performance venues as well as tiny dive bars and jazz clubs.
