heir eyes. The message behind using the “average black girl” for her paintings is to simply uplift and highlight the beauty of the person that she chooses to paint. A lot of times, the females that she paints are astonished that they even get painted, or made into art, which is the purpose of this journey. She also has the idea that when she highlights each of these females, (hence the titles are their names on social media) she’s allowing her audience to recognize who they are and what they do just by searching their name. BriLynn integrates the females with her bold, popping colors as the background of the paintings. She uses any material that she can find or that she feels bring the pieces to life in addition to acrylic paint. Using different materials make the pieces complex, but also bring them together. She also produces bodies of work portraying natural hair products, which is something she values on a more personal level, relating to her social standing and identity as a black female.

“I’m fascinated with the way in which women are so complex when it comes to their image. As women, we are figures that set the leading example of what beauty is or what it could be. To be seen as the inferior s*x to the male figure, it’s important for me to highlight or restate the female image.”

BriLynn Asia also does commissioned work for many different customers, such as requested custom paintings and murals. The reactions from those who request a painting is typically part of the reason why she enjoys commissions.
