Speech to the 2023 class of graduates at the European University of Cyprus July 6, 2023

07/07/2023

Addressing the class of 2023 graduates of the European University of Cyprus, July 6, 2023, Nicosia, Cyprus.
_________________________________________________________________
Thank you for the nice introduction and thank you Rector Professor Andreas Efstathiou for inviding me to give a speech and for giving me the chance to congratulate so many young adults for such an important achievement in their lives.

Dear Graduates, family members, faculty and Staff of the European University of Cyprus it is a great honor to be part of this celebration. This is such a beautiful evening filled with emotions of pride and achievement as you the 2023 graduates are ready to close a very important chapter of your life’s story.
Parents, grandparents, and family friends you are probably wondering where the years have gone. It does not seem that long ago when these adults we honor today were off to a daycare. Time went so fast and always does but memories stay invariant to time giving the vivid feeling it was just yesterday. This graduation celebration of achievements is one of these memories that time will never wear out.

Dear graduates you grew and now graduate in the mist of technological developments and remarkable innovations where the virtual world is slowly replacing parts of the physical world. Your grandparents and perhaps parents were reading about some of these innovations in science fiction stories while you Twitter and tweet, read news and books on line you communicate with anyone across the globe in a speedy manner. You are participants of many social media that are continuously evolving with AI and ChatGPT and many more that are coming.

Just for comparison purposes when I left Cyprus in 1973 to study abroad, I used to write letters to my parents and get a reply letter a month later full of grammatical errors a vivid reminder that my parents did not have the opportunity of education as I did.

Today thanks to so many Universities public and private in Cyprus you are given the opportunity to receive such an important gift of learning by working hard and earning a university degree. Your parents and especially grandparents I am sure are full of joy and pride and you should feel proud of giving them such pleasant feelings as many will see themselves through you. Any past regrets of not having the opportunity to get a degree will vanish now as you achieved your goal which was their desired goal.

As technology advances so fast new opportunities will open up but so will dangers and uncertainties. Your university education gave you the tools and ability to navigate through this highly complex world of options and opportunities.

Armed with the skills and knowledge you have attained together with honest hard work you can achieve anything you set as a goal while been aware that we live in an uncertain world.
You may fall but you have the tools to get up. Some failures in life are inevitable. The only way to avoid them is to take no risks, stay isolated and inactive and that is the worse form of failure. You will face criticism and betrayal, but you will do fine and evolve to be better.

As Aristotle said the only way to avoid criticism is to say nothing, do nothing and be nothing and I am sure no one wants to be nothing. You turn criticism into positive energy and betrayal into success. You have the tools and abilities to do that as long as you stay resilient and focused.

I mention resilience but we also need balance in what we do and how we interact with others and how we treat ourselves. Complement this gift of education you received with love for others starting with your families expanding to friends and fellow humans especially those who are vulnerable and in need for some nice words as often this is what is needed the most.

You are also living in α country which needs your education and support. It is a divided country, partially occupied, where crimes of humanity took place, many young people lost their lives, laws have been violated, corruption brought many to their knees.
The least you can do as educated graduates is to stand up for democratic values and the rule of law as no one should be above the law. Respect the opinions of others even when you do not agree. Be nice but not naïve. Have an opinion but do not be arrogant. Our small country needs all opinions as it is through these diverse opinions and civilized discussions that good plans of action often emerge.
