Good Morning Friends! One of the most fun downtime activities during the Aloft, Inc. Panama tour, was watching the fruit feeders at Canopy Camp, Darien , where birds like these Collared Aracaris feasted. Thank you Larry Rimer for this photo.

Good Morning Friends! Another of the many woodpeckers we found during the Hawks Aloft, Inc. Panama adventure - Spot-breasted Woodpecker. Found in only a handful of places in Panama, these guys favor lowland habitat with marshes and fields.

Good Morning Friends! Many of the participants in our Hawks Aloft, Inc. Panama tour took amazing photographs that we want to share with you, like this Squirrel Cuckoo taking flight by Larry Rimer. This bird forages beneath the canopy and is not easily seen, especially in flight. Canopy Camp, Darien

Who Won the 2023 Hawks Aloft Raffle Quilt? 03/12/2023

Good Morning Friends! We drew the winning ticket for the Hawks Aloft, Inc. raffle quilt yesterday. Well, we hope we have a winner . . . The ticket bears only a first name and a phone number. I called and left a voice mail message! Hopefully I will get a return call. Thank you everyone who helped in the making of the quilt, selling tickets, and stocking the hopper! We raised about $6000! Work has already begun on the next quilt. Thank you Bob McInteer and Cynthia Figueroa McInteer for hosting the event, and for the photos and video!

Who Won the 2023 Hawks Aloft Raffle Quilt? We drew the winning ticket (and a backup ticket) today. We have a winner, if only the winner will call us back. Please check your voice mail for a message!...

Good Morning Friends! We also visited a Wounaan Indigenous Community during the Aloft, Inc. trip to Panama.

Good Morning Friends! Warning: Not a bird! But, a wonderful sighting from our Panama adventure a couple of weeks ago. Three-toed sloth, climbing toward the weekend! Canopy Camp, Darien

30/11/2023

Good Morning Friends! Just a tiny bird with unassuming plumage in the over-sized vegetation of the lowland rainforest. I am especially pleased to capture this Gray-cheeked Nunlet with my camera. So lucky that he popped up for a second. Canopy Camp, Darien

Good Morning Friends! A Blue Cotinga to start your day. This little fellow, and his mate, posed for us for an hour one morning! But, a small bird against a gray sky, makes for challenging photography.

Good Morning Friends! From the very largest raptors, Harpy Eagle to two of the smallest residents of the lowland rainforest at Canopy Camp, Darien! The Golden-headed Manakin was encountered during our Harpy Eagle trek. There is a lek of Golden-collared Manakins right on the grounds of Canopy Camp, where we were thrilled to be able to watch the courtship displays of the males. Both of these photos were taken by our excellent guides, well-versed in the art of positioning a cell phone to a spotting scope to get close up photos of birds, not possible with most cameras.

Here is a link to a YouTube video of their courtship displays - Look carefully and you might spy a successful male! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JrP_N9tqdM

Good Morning Friends! Thank you for following along and putting up with all my bird photos from our amazing Hawks Aloft, Inc. adventure in Panama. I continue to work on processing my photos.

Deep in the lowland rainforest of National Park the toddler Harpy Eagle fledgling, age 8-9 months, is ever watchful for the approach of mom or dad bringing food. At this age, he/she has no idea that he will become a fierce hunter one day. For now, and for the next year+, he will be cared for by his parents, learning to hunt under their tutelage. Getting to a nest location and then getting a reasonable photo is an exceptional challenge. We, Team Hawks Aloft, are so proud that every single one of us made it all the way there. Thank you to our incredible guides, Eliecer Rodriquez, Oscar Fria, and Eric Rodriguez, assisted by the Embera indigenous community. Camp Darien.

Hello again friends! When I post my bird photos, I like to look up the species online. While doing so for this Long-billed Hermit, I came upon this very cool PBS Nature video of his courtship, including his dance and his song! Did you know that these little fellows sing? I didn't! Check out this YouTube video of their courtship - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEclhvqDoP0

Good Morning friends! As the snow falls here in Albuquerque, I remember this Long-billed Hermit, living in the land where it never snows!

24/11/2023

Good Morning Friends! Summer Tanagers, a common breeding bird in New Mexico, winter in the tropical forests of Panama. What a treat to see this brilliant red male that might have nested right here in the bosque!

Happy Thanksgiving friends!

Good Morning Friends! Hummingbird antics at Canopy Tower, Panama! Although our team marveled at the many larger species of birds found on the Hawks Aloft Inc tour, it was thrilling to spend time at the hummingbird feeders of Canopy Camp, Darien and Canopy Tower. IDs on the individual photos. I so enjoyed finally being able to photograph these little jewels. -- Gail
