•Foot Work This drill is a bread and butter for training myself, my fighters, my athletes and my clients. What is Proprioception? “Proprioception refers to the body’s ability to perceive its own position in space. An easy example of proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger.” Why is this important in martial arts? Skill in martial arts is very much based on ones ability to move with intention and power. Often times when new to this journey it can be very difficult to learn. Movement found in martial arts are very unorthodox and awkward to those who do not train them. Being able to know where your body is in regards to the outside world and knowing how to move your hands and feet at the same time is a very important skill. This drill is very good at teaching us those things. Things to remember when doing this drill! 1. Take your time: This can be very difficult for some at first, slowing down! Allowing your nervous system to adapt is key to becoming proficient in this drill. 2. Be mindful of your stance: Never cross your legs and make sure you can never draw a line between your front foot and back (being on a skateboard). If either of these things happen during a fight you are very vulnerable to attacks to the legs, take downs and far more likely to get knocked out should you take a significant strike to the head. 3. Have fun! This drill can be really frustrating at first, take it one step at a time. Like I said in the video this is a great drill for all levels to train. Once you’ve completed all three steps to this drill and you are comfortable you can implement other things to make it more challenging like having your non-dominant side forward or adding strikes, blocks and slips to your combinations. Martial Arts Is My Super Power •
If ever you have witnessed me do something that seemed impressive. I don't mean a physical feat, but overcoming adversity, making tough choices, being possitive and optimistic when even all the odds seemed stacked against me. If you ever wonder how I learned to do that. It was through training martial arts. Honing and fostering the fire inside of myself. Martial arts has saved my life more times than I can count and I'm so thankful, I can not even fathom who I would be without this discipline. Have their been scary moments? Sh*tty ones? Times I wanted to give up? Absolutely! Hundreds of them.. but despite it all, this discipline has saved my life. It has Empowered me. It has Inspired me. It has Transformed me. So now I dedicate my life to teaching others just how powerful a tool martial arts can be to shaping a life you want for yourself. Remember we all have a fight and we all have fire inside of us.
