No Dream is Too Big
Mia le Roux from Cape Town in the Western Cape was crowned Miss South Africa 2024 for Miss World. The 28-year-old is the first differently-abled winner in the history of the Miss South Africa pageant.
In her acceptance speech Le Roux said : “With a humble and grateful heart, I accept the incredible responsibility of being your Miss South Africa 2024.
“As a little girl I never would have thought that someone like me could become Miss South Africa. It is extremely powerful what this could mean to other little girls – that even if you have something that makes you different, you still can achieve your dreams with determination and hard work.
“At the tender age of two, I was blessed by my community with the gift of a cochlear implant. Family, friends and strangers rallied to raise funds for this operation – a life-changing opportunity that allowed me to hear. It was also the start of a long journey to listen to sound and connect with the world through speech, a journey that also has taught me to never give up. It took two years of speech therapy and continued repetition of words before I looked up to the sky one day and said my first four words: ‘Kyk daar, wit wolke – look there, white clouds.’
“Today, it is my turn to be your community, to be a voice for those who, like me, have experienced the challenges of being different and feeling excluded. I am here to serve as your representative, to champion the causes that matter to South Africans and to create a space where everyone can shine in their unique, beautiful way.
“South Africans face many challenges, from financial exclusion and lack of access to resources, to the struggles faced by those who are differently abled. These are not just issues; they are opportunities for us all to come together and build a more inclusive and supportive society.”
We at the DDS hope this story inspires all the little boys and girls who visit us in our clinics to dream big; their parents, to never doubt the dream and to our past/present students to give these dreams wings.

Did you know early detection of hearing loss in newborns is crucial for their development???
Look out for these signs:
•Your baby doesn’t startle at loud noises within birth to 6 weeks
•Doesn’t turn towards sounds even after 3- 4 months, or hasn’t started babbling by 6 - 7 months
If you notice any of these, consult an audiologist promptly.
Early intervention can make a world of difference, ensuring your child develops essential language and social skills.
Don’t wait—early action is key!
Tinnitus is the ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound you might hear in your ears. It can be a minor annoyance or a serious disruption.
When to Seek Help:
If you experience persistent ringing sensation, it's essential to consult an ENT specialist and an audiologist.
They can help identify the cause and suggest treatments to manage the symptoms.
Don't suffer in silence—reach out for help and find relief!
Hearing loss can cause you to miss out on important speech sounds, affecting your ability to understand speech clearly. You might miss low-frequency sounds like [m] or high-frequency sounds like [s], [sh], which can make words seem mumbled or unclear. If you're experiencing these issues, consulting an audiologist can help you find solutions to improve your hearing and communication.
Audiologists play a critical role as primary healthcare professionals in evaluating, diagnosing, treating, preventing and managing hearing related difficulties and balance disorders in both children and adults. Let's recognize the vital contributions of audiologists during this Better Hearing Month and beyond.
Untreated dizziness and balance disorders can significantly increase the risk of falls, especially among older adults. This Better Hearing Month, let's prioritize our overall ear health, including addressing balance issues. By seeking proper diagnosis and treatment, we can reduce the risk of falls and maintain our independence and quality of life.
Throwback to our video otoscopy workshop ☑️

Approximately 6 out of every 1000 babies are born with significant hearing problems. Early detection and intervention are crucial for their development. Let's spread awareness and support initiatives that ensure every child has the opportunity to hear the world around them.
Do you know how to protect your ears? Here are a few tips for practicing safe hearing. By following these tips, you can help maintain good hearing health for years to come.
