You may have heard of planting tomatoes on their side. It may sound like a weird thing to do, but here's why it works so well.
Tomato stems are full of parenchyma cells. These non-descript cells are located just below the epidermal layer. One of the coolest things parenchyma cells do is turn into roots, known as adventitious roots
By burying the plant sideways or very deeply in your garden, you’re putting more of the stem underground from the start to enable lots of adventitious root growth. This means your tomato plant now has a much more complex root system, making it easier to take up the water and nutrients needed to make bushel after bushel of tomatoes.

Out in the barn, the husband has already prepared the horse and sleigh for the journey home, and is now patiently waiting while his wife is still inside saying goodbye to everyone. This could take a while. At least he has a beautiful sky and scene to enjoy while he waits. With a little luck, they’ll be home before dark. There is something in our animal body that instinctively knows—the answers will come when we can just sit upon the Earth, and allow the wisdom that lives there to seep through us like snow melt.
In fact, ancient Norse shamans even had a name for it—útiseta.
In the Norse shamanic tradition of seiðr, practitioners were often women. And one of their key tools for receiving wisdom and insight was the practice of útiseta— literally “sitting out.”
During an útiseta the seiðr practitioner would sit in nature, often overnight, to commune with the living world and receive a divinatory answer to their questions. Practitioners would usually sit on a long barrow, over the graves of their ancestors, or on another local spot of power.
Though útiseta comes from the Norse tradition, this practice of “sitting out” in nature to receive wisdom is universal to the human story. It’s innate, simple, and consistently miraculous—and it’ll help you reconnect with the depths that are calling you.
To practice útiseta this solstice season, all you need is a single solid stretch of an afternoon—an hour or even less—to tap into the mystical clarity of the season.
So gather your warm coats and mittens, find a spot on a soft log, or a stone overlooking the creek, and simply… sit. Take your questions, and be relieved of what you carry. Sit out and have the ancestors come sit down beside you.

Since time immemorial this season has asked us to believe.
As the days whittle down to their shortest points in the Northern hemisphere, belief is the fuel that burns the brightest, keeping the heart alight while we wait for the return of the light.
Belief is our willingness to greet the unseen forces that surround us and say— I trust. I trust that I am being cared for. I trust that there is a wider plan. I trust that there is more than I can see, and that no matter how dark it gets, I trust the light will come back to me.
Every year this season seems to ask me the same question my ancestors pondered— what do I believe?
Being bombarded from every corner with advertisements, it’s easy to start believing some strange things. Like, if I don’t buy enough special gifts for those I care about, somehow I'll be less lovable.
But I think the beliefs that we are asked to renew each Solstice season are so much kinder.
A belief in generosity.
A belief in the goodness of things coming.
A belief in a great, benevolent mystery that is always here to help us, even when we lose our ability to believe.

Cheer is something you cultivate.
It is a fire you must kindle, stick by stick, with your willingness to build something warm.
Cheer is a verb.
These weeks leadings up to the winter solstice are known as a season for cheer not because they are innately joyful, but because it’s a time when our ancestors specifically chose to cultivate cheer. To light candles in the dark. To pour a cup of tea and watch the stars sharpen on the horizon.
Because building cheer is like building a fire—it's how we have the resilience to meet the rest of winter. 🕯️
I remind myself of this on the mornings I don’t want to build a fire in the stove.
On the nights when the world feels too heavy, and hope too small.
On the days when I feel almost guilty for wanting to create cheer at all—I remember that this is exactly why the holidays exist.

my opinion on diet was gigantically affected by two raw foodist in norman walker and jay kordich . their veiw points made me believe in the serious importance of of the presence of a very high percentage of raw plants in diet . the way i put it is that only raw plants hold the sun light they absorb that is then mixed , in the photosynthesis procedure , with earths minerals and water turning into chlorophyll . and that chlorophyll , that i call 'liquid starlight' , is destroyed when we heat plants rendering them way less nutricious . and that clorophyll is the hottest / cleaning burning fuel for the cells of our bodiest that there is . my comparison is that cooked foods are like throwing wet logs on a fire , they smolder and dont burn hot while leaving left over unburnt material . where as raw foods full of clorophyll burn hot and clean like dry oak logs leaving no left over matter . everything is burnt up for energy by our cells with no left over 'ashes' , this cleaner burning substance does not lead to fatty circualtion clogging substances in the body which cooked foods do . . and i now see proper diet as raw baby greens/vegi/fruit , with substancial amounts of seeds and nuts for healthy fats and protein . only cooked being steamed or baked vegi , along with steamed grains in limited amounts . i make home made trail mix , and a seed mixture of sesame-hemp-sun flower-wheat germ-golden flax which i grind . place mix in cheese shaker and sprinkle on all meals in liberal amounts . seeds n nuts have replaced animal flesh in my diet . where as 30 years ago upon getting plant based it was dry beans and rice . but now after decades of experimenting via quitting salt / fasting / raw fooding ive found that my body functions way better without the empty cooked beans n rice , and rarely eat dry beans . though i go thru times when i feel decent amounts of steamed grains , i mix rice-wheat-barley together for a broader spectrum mineral base , work good for me .
THE WAY TO HEAL AILMENTS = LONG TERM RICH , RAW LIQUID DIET : it rests the gi tract from a heavy work load which gives the body more energy to utilize for removing damaged cells and toxins . while the rich liquids , basically from home made seed and nut milks , provide the body energy and cellular building blocks ! though i add that juicing raw greens and vitamin c sources such as citrus should be added to the nut n seed milks to provide most all the needed building blocks ! this is the outlook ive arrived at here at 30 years of veganism / medicinal herbs / raw fooding / fasting / natural healing methods...

MONDAY FASTING CLUB : 24 hrs on green tea and pure frozen orangejuice . having a tough time not eating so making a vegi broth out of onions-tomatoes-carrots-mushrooms-potatoes . lots of tomato to make it a more satisfying heavier broth . not actually a fast but for a male american that has always ate big meals its a slow march that takes months to get back into fasting shape
MONDAY FASTING CLUB : i think it was 3 days on green tea last week . then vegi broth with a cup of vegi from broth on thu./fri.. then sat/sun i ate big salads at evening . the good thing was by friday my gut felt noticably less bloated / flatter , gives me incentize to get back in fastin shape . so once again im done eating tonite and gunning for 3+ days on green tea , with if need be 100% pure frozen oj . im also gunning to get back to near 100% raw , with only cooked being dry roasted peanuts and steamed vegi . i know from experience to get there i need incorporate lots of seeds n nuts , i need the protein n fats in them...

BUT I KNOW HOW THIS GOES = IF YOU GO INTO PIG MODE ITS A BATTLE TO GET TO THE NEXT FAST . SO THE WAR IS TO QUIT EATING AFTER THIS 96 HOUR EVENT AND STAY ON COURSE . THATS WHERE IM AT . IF NEED BE I WILL EAT SOMETHING LIKE BANANA AND WALNUTS TONITE WITH THE OUTLOOK BEING TO STOP AT THAT , AND CONTINUE NOT EATING AT MINIMUM TIL THE NEXT NITE TURNING IT INTO NOT A FAST BUT AN EXTREME DIET OF WHOLE MOSTLY RAW FOODS . FOR AMERICANS WHO GREW UP AS HUGE OVER EATERS WE HAVE TO BE ECSTATIC TO GET INTO THAT MODE LONG TERM AND KEEP PUSHING MONTH BY MONTH / YEAR BY YEAR TO BECOME STRONGER FASTERS WITH GREATER CONTROL OVER OUR APPETITES . MONDAY FASTING CLUB : 72 hours in . had to make a broth of mushrooms and onions today because was freezing , as long as its liquid im good as the quest is to keep the gi tract void of solids in effort to start an outward flow from body of varying pollutants and damaged cells . as the old timers would say ''fastin is natures surgeon'' . also of note , ive quit salt something like 5 months ago but added some to this broth as a fasting guy , whose name i forgot right now but call the crazy canuck , says you need sodium when fasting
a young vegan weight lifter was asking questions about diet while being interested in protein and making seitan at another site and this was my reply :
im for simplifying and keeping plants as close to original state as possible . thusly when you say seitan im thinking just boil the hard wheat seed for like an hour then go from there . for me thats buddha bowl style with a mix of grains including barley n rice . but maybe for you take the cooked wheat and chop it up in a food processor to get into some type state that you can make maybe a meatloaf type thing with by adding chopped vegi and saturating it with maybe a vegi broth from say mushrooms , or top it with a tomato type sauce like used on meatloaf . bottom line for me is = i dont consume any man made product like seitan or tofu , and i want to keep food prep as simple as possible so ive never done seitan . ive been vegan 30 years , heres my page at pinterest with lots of links to the things i most agree with : https://www.pinterest.com/vegansentry/veganism%2B/
ALSO : you saying body builder makes me think of seeds n nuts . im an ex athlete thats always exercised (but not lifted at body building levels) and done manual labor , construction and landscaping , so my minds always been thinking of building muscle and thusly protein sources . i started out a huge dry bean eater , but for well over 5 years ive near eliminated dry beans and instead utilize seeds and nuts as my proteins . i buy the 16oz plastic peanut jars with saltless dry roasted peanuts then refill them with a mix of walnut-pumpkin seed-raisin-peanut-pistacio-dry dates i chop up-etc . i carry these mix jars in work truck and car 24/7 so i can drink the mix out of jars on the go , all i eat from morning til dinner is trail mix and fruit . though sometimes i make a heavy duty oatmeal with walnut-peanutbutter-raisins-my seed mix-banana or other fruit for breakfast thats a super heavyduty all day fuel . but besides the trail mix my other protein source is my seed mix of sesame-hemp-wheat germ-sun flower-golden flax seed that i grind . i put this mix in a cheese shaker and sprinkle it on everything from oats to salads to grain dishes . i now swear by this trail mix and seed mix way of protein and only eat dry beans once or twice a month . concerning dinner its usually a heavy duty salad with a 1/3 cup of seed powder poured on . or a buddha bowl with varying grains , raw / steamed / broiled vegi...
