We are excited to welcome our neighbor Nori Nakamura to our Sip&Savor guest wine pour 🥂

Nori was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and first exposed to fine wine at his uncle’s Italian Restaurant. After graduating with a degree in Economics, he started his career in hotel management where he continued to be excited about wine. He obtained the certification of sommelier from the Japan Sommelier Association and was transferred to the Hotel Nikko San Francisco as a Catering Manager in 1999. He began to visit many local wineries in Napa/Sonoma, and his interest in California wine grew.
 
In 2000, he decided to study winemaking. He worked two harvests in Napa. After obtaining a second bachelor degree of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, and a stint at Napa Wine Company, he spent more than 15 years working as Assistant Winemaker at Artesa, and then as Winemaker at Jamieson Ranch Vineyards and Larson Family Winery. These experiences enabled him to establish his own style, and in 2010 he launched his brand NORIA. Today he is focused on the growth of NORIA at its new location in Berkeley on Fifth street, which opened in August 2023!

For more than a decade, Japanese American winemaker Nori Nakamura has been creating wines based on an unusual calculation: Imagine the food you want to pair with a wine, then seek out the vineyard, region and variety that would likely hit the mark — and style your winemaking decisions to make it a match.

Lacking a winery and tasting-room home of their own, though, Nakamura’s single-vineyard have largely flown low on the radar.

Now they have both in a miniature warehouse fronting Berkeley’s busy Gilman Street corridor — the newest addition to Berkeley’s “urban wine region” — opened in August.

The surroundings, with blond wood against concrete, echo the wines themselves: clean and bright. Juicy acidity reigns across the lineup, which includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and more. Nuance in both whites and reds lives in the quality of fruit character — reticent behind savory minerality in some, rich and forward in others.

Finally, on 7/19/23, the city of Berkeley issued the building permit for NORIA Winery! We just applied for a final inspection, which should take place very soon. We will open our doors to the public after the inspection! Please stay tuned!!

Gilman St. in front of the winery is closed due to renovation work. By the time the winery opens, hopefully in a month or so, everything should be beautifully restored!
