Pricing can be a challenge! While finding the selling sweet spot for your items, there are some important factors to consider.

An accurate price should cover supplies, paying yourself, reinvesting, and covering your overhead (other costs besides supplies).

Try this formula to see how close you are to good pricing:
(Supplies x4) + Shipping + Labor + Overhead Rate = Retail Price
(Swipe to see an example.)

SUPPLIES - Actual materials to make your items
-Multiplying x4 allows you to cover your cost, make a profit, and have enough to re-invest in more supplies.

LABOR - Pay yourself! Your hourly rate will be based on your skill level.
-You will charge more for your labor if you’ve studied your art form and have years of experience than if you’re a novice.
-Avoid overestimating or underestimating your skill.

OVERHEAD - Don’t forget “hidden” costs like packaging, tools, courses, marketing, web host fees (Etsy), payment host fees (PayPal), domain name (if you have your own website), physical location if you have one, craft show fees, design software, paid apps, etc.
-Add these up and divide by how many sales you had in a year to get your per piece overhead rate.
-Ex: If your total overhead costs are $3K and you sell 300 pieces in a year, your average overhead per piece is $10.

OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER:

Recession - A slow economic climate may impact your pricing strategy. You may need to make adjustments in your supplies multiplier and what you pay yourself.

The “Going Rate” - To assess the market for your items, compare prices with your competitors. Your competitors are those who:
-do what you do
-with similar materials
-at your skill level
Compare realistically. Diamonds vs. crystals is not an accurate comparison. Think apples to apples, not apples to oranges.

Shipping - Some people like to add this into their overhead; others calculate per item. Either way, make sure you recoup this cost.
