Billy Riley's old gym was a modest wooden shack (building began in 1947 by the wrestlers themselves) that produced some of the greatest catch exponents of the mid 20th century (e.g., Karl Gotch, and Billy Robinson). Born in 1896, Riley was a successful middleweight champion, coach, and promoter who learned from feared legends like Waino Ketonen and Billy "Pop" Charnock.

Karl Gotch (then Karel Istaz) was invited to Riley's by Billy Robinson's uncle Alf after Gotch placing at the 1948 Olympics in London. Karl was teasingly nicknamed "chesty" for the prideful way he carried himself by the other wrestlers there. Gotch only credited Joe "Robby" Robinson (Billy Joyce's brother and one of Riley's best friends) for being the only one to take him under his wing and show him the Lancashire catch-as-catch-can style (Karl later deepened his catch-as-catch-can grappling literacy with Ben Sherman and Frank Wolfe upon moving to America).

Karl Gotch (aka "Kamisama" or "The God of Wrestling" in Japan) first called Riley's gym a "snake pit" in a Japanese press junket and the name stuck (Karl even helped dig the ditch that would later become the gym's shower).

Since then, many have copied the name Snake Pit to take full advantage of Gotch and Riley's massive influence. The real Riley's gym eventually collapsed under the weight of heavy snowfall back in the early 1970s. Billy Riley would pass away a few years later in the fall of 1977.

Billy Riley was a crucial link in the long chain of legendary athletes and coaches that passed the torch of catch-as-catch-can during the early 20th century.

FACT: Catch wrestling's impact on the world dwarfs not just all other martial arts but ALL sports...

Without catch-as-catch-can, there would be no:

• 119 years of Olympic freestyle

• Collegiate & High School folkstyle

• & all other exhibition pro "wrestling"

• Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which came fr Mitsuyo Maeda who developed his style of judo/jiu-jitsu in direct response to his experiences on prize-fighting circuits under the moniker "Count Koma"

• . The very first Mixed Martial Arts organizations, Shooto & Pancrase, were inspired by the influence of Karl Gotch well before UFC. Catch wrestlers Karl Gotch and Gene Lebell were also instrumental in the seminal Inoki vs. Ali mixed fight.

Matches were predominantly won via pinfall, but many were won by submission & choke too:

• 11/1/1888-Springfield, IL-"Lancashire style, catch-as-catch-can, all dangerous holds permitted"; Greek George defeated William Stone by forcing him to concede to a leg hold. George had Stone's leg locked up and began bending it over his own. Stone cried out, "Are you going to break my leg, man?" George replied, "I will if you don't give up. This is Lancashire style." Stone audibly gave up, shouting, "For God's sake let go my leg." George took the next fall with a pin. The account can be found in the Daily Illinois State Journal; 11/2/1888.

• 12/21/1893-The Metropolitan Assoc. of AAU catch-as-catch-can tournament; Central Palace Hall, NYC. In the 115-lb. class Edward Harris defeated H. Smith with a choke hold (choked unconscious). In the 125-lb. class George Bothner used a choke hold to subdue H. Bittrich, rendering him unconscious too.

• 5/24/1897-Stevens Point, WI-Fred Beell beat Tollephson, 2 straight falls with strangle holds.

• 4/2/1899-Humboldt, Iowa-Frank Gotch beat Marshall Green-three straight falls with strangle holds.

Maybe the best name ever for a pub, THE WRESTLERS! Many years ago pub landlords here in England were also catch wrestling promoters and matches would take place in pub beer gardens and also on the cobbles. Often the catch wrestlers were big time drinkers and they would run up huge beer bills that they would pay off via wrestling in no holds barred catch wrestling matches. 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🏆🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
