According to the US Geological Survey and Global Warming Experts: Wetlands and Rainforests are the Earth’s best defense mechanisms in fighting climate change.

The wetlands are being destroyed faster than any other ecosystem. In Louisiana, a lot of the wetlands are privately owned and their primary source of income is the sale of alligator eggs. This income provides a direct financial incentive for landowners to restore and preserve their wetlands!

The alligator industry is a powerful ally in the fight against climate change! 🐊🌞🌎🌱💸

Have you ever wondered what an alligator skin looks like before it becomes leather? This is it! 🐊👜

On most alligator farms, this is what they call a “wet salted skin” and it is their finished product! From this stage, it is brought to a tannery where the magic happens and it turns into vibrant colored leather✨🌈

On top of this, farms will sell the meat for consumption, head and feet for souvenirs, and even send what might be viewed as waste to places that can break down the fats and oils for other uses. A true no waste operation! 🐊🌎🎉

Happy Monday! Here are some fun facts about Louisiana alligators:
1. Alligators are not on the endangered species list! In fact, they haven’t been for 37 years! The population in Louisiana is THRIVING with over 2 million statewide!🐊📈
2. Most alligator farms do not breed the animals on site. Instead, farms will collect the eggs from the wild. 🥚🪺
3. Farmers release around 5% back into the wild once the gator reaches anywhere from 36”-60”. This program is one of the main contributors to the booming population today. 💥⬆️

As the temperatures drop in Louisiana, you may be wondering “What do alligators do when it gets cold?”.

American alligators do not hibernate, they brumate. Once the temperatures begin to drop, alligators will slowly stop feeding, slow their metabolism, and become more lethargic. While they will still be conscious and aware of their surroundings, they will remain still in their mud holes coming up for air as little as once a day.

If it gets cold enough for the water to freeze, you may see an alligator “snorkeling” as pictured above! Thankfully for the alligators, this is a rare occasion in Louisiana🐊🤿☀️

If you keep up with our page, you may be familiar on this! This picture was taken in July during egg collection and you can clearly see what we call the “band”. During egg collection, this is a good thing! This means the egg is fertile and the gator is alive! As the embryo grows, so does the band. Eventually the band should make the entire egg white.

Fast forward to August, hatching season! Now when we see the band, this is bad news. This means the gator did not grow beyond this point and the egg is no longer viable.

Smile, its Saturday😆

The end of July marks the end of egg collection season for Louisiana alligator farms🥳

At this point, most of the eggs that will be collected are in the incubators safe and sound growing little baby gators🥹 Farmers are monitoring the temperatures and moisture levels daily to ensure the highest possible hatch out rates!

Let the countdown to baby gator content begin!🐊🥚 💙
