As we all wrestle with a new world order of coronavirus for the next several weeks we have two choices. We can sit in our homes and become stressed about the health implications and social implications and financial implications and more.

Or, we can look for ways to be a source of light and hope to everyone in our path and even those who are not in our direct path. We all have a choice to bring help, hope and joy to others, or to wallow in worry. Let’s join together and look up to our source of hope, and be light.

"No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.” Luke 11:33 NIV

Let’s be Light!

At this time, nursing homes everywhere are closed to visitors to ensure the health of our most vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors. These facilities will remain closed to visitors for the foreseeable future – until the risk of community spread has subsided. All communal dining and activities are suspended for the foreseeable future.

Residents of personal care and nursing home facilities watch and read the news – they know they are at high risk. And now, their normal routine, activities, and most importantly, visits from family and friends are interrupted.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
As our communities adjust to a new normal – let’s be light to our neighbors. We are hoping to encourage a card and lettering writing initiative to those who are shut in or are in a quarantined facility to show our love and care for them. They are a generation who appreciates and highly values written correspondence.

A greeting card, a letter, a child’s drawing, a postcard – any remembrance of our most senior and most vulnerable family, friends and neighbors is important at this challenging time. Here are some tips for sending a warm note of hope and encouragement:

a. If you have a fever, are coughing, or have any symptoms consistent with influenza or coronavirus do not send mail until you are not contagious.
b. Use a sponge or cloth to wet the seal and the stamp, so that no saliva will remain on the envelope.
c. Wash and sanitize your hands when handling the mail, so that the card or letter will be less likely to have any contagions. Be aware that nursing homes will likely hold mail a day or two before delivery.
d. Be sure to add a brief personal note and word of encouragement, reminding the recipient that they are remembered.
e. If you can make this a regular habit – once or twice a week -- it would bring joy at this time of confusion and fear for nursing home residents.
f. Consider sending a note of appreciation to leadership and staff of nursing and personal care facilities for their amazing and steadfast care for our family and friends.

Let’s be light.
