Hello,
My name is Tasha Auch, and I am a student from UC Santa Barbara in the Sociology Department undertaking a senior honors thesis. I am interested in the disclosure process of female UCSB undergrads who identify with having an eating problem (ranging from skipping meals to clinical diagnosis).
Your Role: I would like you to participate in an interview with me lasting from 30-45 minutes at the location of your choice. I will be asking questions about your process of self-disclosure in regards to your eating problem. Your interview is confidential, you can be provided a pseudonym, and your name will not be connected to your responses.
Benefits: The main benefit of participating is advancing the research on eating problems. To compensate you for your time, all participants will receive $20 gift card.
Whatโ€™s next? If you are interested or know anyone who would be interested, please contact me at:
[email protected]
Interviews will be conducted through Feb 21st.
Do not hesitate to email with any questions before, during, and after participation.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Hello,

Exciting news for you prospective graduate students. Not only will there be one graduate school fair this week, there will be TWO (2)!

1. Graduate and Professional School Day
Thursday, November 5 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm โ€“ along the walkway in front of Career Services
Over 120 different graduate programs are coming. This is a rare opportunity to talk with admissions professionals and learn about the programs and admissions criteria.

2. The The California Forums for Diversity in Graduate Education, planned by a consortium of public and private colleges and universities from throughout California, have been designed particularly to meet the needs of advanced undergraduates and master's candidates who belong to groups that are currently underrepresented in doctoral-level programs. The groups include low-income and first-generation college students and especially African Americans, American Indians, Chicanos/Latinos, Filipinos, Pacific Islanders, Asian American women, and Asian American men in the arts, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences.
Saturday, November 7 (Location and time TBA, I'd wager its on the CHEM Lawn).

(From previous post):
Your Co-President and I will meet with Maria Charles this week to address some departmental issues (discussed in previous post). We understand that not all issues have been brought up in meetings, so please comment below so that we may better address and wants and needs on a departmental level.

02/11/2015

Hello,

Thank you all for participating in the meetings; it's great to hear from one another about one's aspirations, goals, what drives us towards uncharted territories. Relating to one another makes us strong, I think.

This quarter, our meetings focused on the needs of seniors and juniors by hosting graduate student panels and workshops (all of which exceeded the expectations of your fellow officers). In the upcoming quarter, we'll be directing focus onto the whole body of undergraduate sociology, with attention to freshman in particular.

With this being said, there are some things we'd like to address before we wrap up Fall. The graduate panels revealed how some of our junior and senior populations have received little to no research experience, are unfamiliar with the graduate school process, and feel a rift between the undergraduate component of the department and the upper echelons of sociology on a local, national, and global basis (ASA, for example).

Maybe we don't need these things to be addressed; after all, we've been ranked the #1 undergraduate sociology program by CollegeFactual, winning over contenders like Harvard, Berkeley, and Princeton. Though there is reason to celebrate, I don't think we should get comfortable and take things the way they are; if anything, this is a clarion call to push for exciting things.

So, your Co-President and I will meet with Maria Charles this week to address some of these issues. We understand that not all issues have been brought up, so please comment below so that we may better address and wants and needs on a departmental level. Thank you.
