Guess who's been to see us at Folly Wildlife Rescue - no, you're not seeing things- that's the real Johnny Depp !

As you probably know, Johnny has been appearing with our Patron Jeff Beck on his UK tour and in a recent break, Jeff's wife Sandra brought him up to visit us and see for himself the work we do with wildlife.

And what an incredible afternoon it was for our staff and volunteers, as he toured the hospital's care and vet units. Johnny was incredibly complimentary and in his own words 'blown away' by what he saw.

To top the visit off, we even allowed him the rare privilege of briefly holding Freddie (as in Mercury!) one of the many orphaned badger cubs we're currently hand rearing - and I think it's fair to say he was bowled over by the whole experience!

'Megaptera’ / There is a lot to consider when freediving to eye level with a mother humpback and her calf. On the day I captured 'Megaptera,' the most important question running through my mind was how to position myself with as little movement as possible so they would not be disturbed. I observed from the surface for over an hour before finally daring to make my attempt, descending forty feet on a single breath before inching towards them, carefully monitoring her reaction as I advanced. Humpbacks have exceptional buoyancy control and use their pectoral flukes to counter any movement in the water. When she lifted her pec on my approach, I wondered: was she compensating for the current, or was I getting too close? No picture is worth agitating an animal, so I decided to err on the side of caution. Rather than rush to the surface and relieve the burning sensation in my lungs, I gently created some distance before allowing myself to drift upwards without a single kick. I am proud of the relationship I maintain with wildlife – at the end of the day, it is the most important part of my job.

Shot on Sony Alpha Universe under special interaction permit (Regulation 13) authorized by the Tongan Ministry of Tourism.

'After trying and failing to hunt a Thomson’s gazelle, young male Ngao rests on top of a hill, swatting flies away with his tail. For a moment, Ngao appeared to be shielding his eyes from the sun.'

'Ngao is the son of brave Nashipai and sister of Namelok. Unfortunately, a few weeks after I took this picture, Ngao lost his sister. Presumably, she died in a fight with a lion. Now, young Ngao has to survive alone. The story of this brother and sister shows us the difficulties that cheetahs have to survive to adulthood.' - S.Chamorro - Wildlife photography & safaris
