Our Story
You may be surprised to learn that LibertyX actually was started in Philadelphia (back then it was called Liberty Teller), and it’s logo was inspired by the one-and-only Liberty Bell. Co-founders Chris Yim and Kyle Powers conceived of the company while they were pursuing their MBA’s at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Purchasing bitcoin back in 2013 was quite a bit hairier than it is today, and Chris and Kyle knew there had to be a better way than finding a stranger online to meet in-person to exchange cash for bitcoin. After a bunch of iterations, they decided to launch America’s first cash bitcoin ATM in Boston’s South Station.
After speaking to thousands of consumers who came to use the bitcoin ATM in-person, we realized that the two most common consumer reservations to buying bitcoin were 1) having to trust a new company 2) long (uncertain) wait times after paying before actually receiving the bitcoin.
We built LibertyX to solve these two pain points, and designed an easy to use bitcoin purchasing platform that is both trustworthy and instant.
