Our property at 434 Main Street was built in 1880 and has a long history in hospitality! On this last day of Black History Month, we wanted to share about Youngs’ Tea Room, owned and operated from 1909-1944 by Margaret Shorter Youngs, her son Claude, and her daughter-in-law Sarah Freeman Youngs.

The story of the Youngs’ Tea Room is recorded in “Fried Chicken and Chocolate Cake: The Story of the Youngs’ Tea Room 1909-1944,” written by Village Historian Linda Schwab in collaboration with Town Historian Judy Furness. They write:

Margaret Shorter Youngs was born into slavery in 1852 and escaped when she was about 9 years old - her father, Thomas, installed a false bottom in a wagon where he hid his wife and 6 children and brought them to freedom in the North. She went on to marry George Youngs and gave birth to Claude in 1882. Claude was a graduate of the Cayuga Lake Military Academy in Aurora and went on to attend the University of Rochester and Howard University. He married Sarah Freeman and records show that in 1904 they lived with his mother at 434 Main Street.

The Youngs’ Tea Room was opened in 1909 and was a huge hit with local residents and Wells College students. The Tea Room specialized in Southern Fried Chicken, fresh baked pies, and Sarah’s famous black chocolate cake.

Margaret passed in 1923 and Sarah fully took over the Tea Room. She and Claude eventually moved to Auburn, NY but continued to run the Tea Room until 1944. Claude passed in 1945 and Sarah in 1971.

We’re grateful to know this piece of local history!
