SQL Server in modalità gestita (Platform as a Service) offre un servizio di database relazionale con una copertura funzionale praticamente identica a quella del Database Engine di un SQL Server tradizionale con una riduzione dei costi di implementazione e manutenzione e, in alcuni casi, il beneficio di nuove funzionalità tipicamente introdotte in anticipo rispetto alle versioni On-Premises. In questa sessione faremo una panoramica sullo stato dell'arte delle offerte Micorsoft, con Azure SQL Database, in tutte le sue declinazioni, con particolare attenzione alle Managed Instance, e di quella Amazon con RDS for SQL Server.

When we carry out a T-SQL statement, we expect to get the result as quickly as possible. T-SQL, like any other SQL dialects, is a declarative language that allows us to say WHAT we want the engine to do and NOT HOW it should perform the task. Basically, it is in the charge of the Query Optimizer to find, in a few fractions of second, a plan that can achieve the result quickly.
In the first part of the session, we will discuss about all the possible plans related to a query analyzing both the logical and the physical plans, their characteristics and the rules that allows the creation of alternatives logically equivalent.
In the second part, we will analyse all the optimization steps that the Query Optimizer really performs to find a “Good enough” plan that actually will be executed.

It has been “the year of the Cloud” for many years now, companies are slowly but surely moving to cloud services like Azure and AWS; businesses are expecting given cost reductions in both infrastructure and personnel, but is that really the case? (spoiler: no) I’ve seen too many companies move to the cloud “because we’ve heard that’s the way to go these days” and completely miss the expected results because it was a mere business decision without the necessary technical research. In this session we’ll explore the move to the cloud from a data professional perspective, helping you evaluate if moving to the cloud is the right thing for your business, and if so how to do it in order to avoid having performance issues and more expenses than before. We’ll then review the role of the Database Administrator to understand how it can evolve to bring even more (tangible) value to the business. At the end of this session you’ll be able to evaluate if and how to make the move in a way that will actually benefit the business, the developers and, of course, you!

Parameter Sensitive Plan (PSP) Optimization is one of the new features of SQL Server 2022 and it is part of the family features known as Intelligent Query Processing that improve the performance of existing workloads without changes to the application code. One of the most important tasks for a database administrator is taking (and testing!) backups. As databases get larger and larger, the amount of time it takes to perform a backup can grow as well, to the point where your backups take longer than your available backup window. There are several settings we can use to optimize backup performance, such as buffer counts, maximum transfer size, and the number of files, but trying every combination of settings on a single production-sized database could take weeks or even months. In this talk, we will apply data science techniques to the problem of backup settings optimization and look at different models for approaching the problem and analyzing data. Some statistics background would be helpful, but is not required; the big requirement is a desire to speed up backups.

There are two cornerstones to building optimized and low maintenance queries in Power BI. The first is making sure queries have been designed to refresh at optimal speeds. Primary topics for performance tuning include: removing columns and rows, applied step configuration and order precedence, query folding, managing variables, and tables vs lists for transformations. The other important cornerstone is intelligently identifying and handling errors as they occur during scheduled refreshes. Primary topics for error handling include: replacing vs removing errors, collecting error metadata, and configuring the refresh to either fail or refresh successfully when errors occur.

Dal 2015 gli utilizzatori di Power BI hanno potuto analizzare dati in real-time grazie all'integrazione con altri prodotti e servizi Microsoft. Con streaming dataflow, si porterà l'analisi in tempo reale completamente all'interno di Power BI, rimuovendo la maggior parte delle restrizioni che avevamo, integrando al contempo funzionalità di analisi chiave come la preparazione dei dati in streaming e nessuna creazione di codice. Per vederlo in funzione, studieremo un caso specifico di streaming come l'IoT con Azure IoT Central.
