While driving through the countryside by scattered pastoral farms in the Green Mountain state, catching a glimpse of a bran quilt adorning either barn, house or outbuilding can be a real thrill. This, in part, is what prompted me to create these one of a kind barn quilts.
Historically, barns were not painted, but were decorated with folk art such as barn quilts. Rather than recreating the entire quilt pattern, barn quilts typically consist of a single quilt block painted on wood in bright, contrasting hues. The simple geometric shapes and vivid colors allow for the barn quilts to be seen from a distance.
I would like nothing better than to see the classic beauty of barn quilts pop up everywhere. And they are! Geographic areas with multiple barn quilts have been mapped, providing a Quilt Trail. More and more, barn quilts are visible in Towns giving an effervescent burst of color to a house or garage. While intended to withstand exterior exposure, a barn quilt can be a perfect piece hanging in a lost or at the peak of a cathedral ceiling.
Living in rural Vermont, I love all of the seasons (with the exception of “mud”). The colors I use in my barn quilts reflect the beauty I see around me: whether it be an apple orchard, berry patch, field of wild flowers, or seasonal foliage. It is art to blend in with nature.
